I dont agree with the first level remake that its better... The background is much brighter. The whole dark theme is mostly gone with it... The factoryplant was scary because it felt so dark and tense... So I don't agree with that... Also the fading between screens in the old version, made it more tense... You never know what is in the next screen... Its has it pro's and con's... but honestly i miss it... because just keeping the camera on fixed position... made every camera shot unique and personal... Now the level is more one big fluid thing, while the old version had all these 'dark cosy' spots to go to...

Oddworld was the first game I got with a PS1 for Christmas in 1997 (at age 7) and me and my parents were blown away by the graphics. I was pretty shocked at the "Mudokon Pops" scene but luckily I had been gaming from age 4 with my first being Spear of Destiny followed by Doom 2, Duke Nukem 3D, and Shadow Warrior (my Dad put the Parental Lock mode on for those last two lol) so I wasn't totally new to animated blood and gore.
@hyenaholicproductions903312 күн бұрын
To some degree the animatics of the original actually hold up fairly well today. The polygon count is down but it still moves well and emotively. Lorne actually said once that he would have been happy to make Oddworld into a proper animated series and that's why the cutscenes look so good.

I disagree with your opinion, unless you are talking about the remake on PSP of Medievil, both of these are certainly not "kid-friendly", they have lost some atmosphere magic because of the higher level of lights, but they still retain about most of what made them really nice. I much prefer the original in some aspects. The darker, gloomier, grimy art style of Rupture Farms (a slaughter-house full of slaves let's remember) was fantastic, whereas the bright version seems sanitised. The Mudokons talking as they work in the new game leans too much towards the comic edge, same for the Sligs, whereas in the original they are silent until spoken to - you feel they would be beaten otherwise. These may seem like nitpicks, but the changes disrupt this immersion for me. Equally, the lighting. Stockyard Escape/Free-fire Zone is much brighter in some areas with glowing mushrooms etc as opposed to being the intimidating darkness that represented the unknown beyond the factory and the journey towards Abe's destiny. Sometimes less is more. I admire the visual effort in the remake for some areas - Paramonia and Scrabania look beautiful - but if I play Abe's Oddysee these days, which I do, I always dig out the original. A "classic controls" would also have been very welcome for seasoned players.

The worst part of it, at least to me, is that the puzzles that they kept (especially with the secret areas) were subject to the new checkpoint system meaning you could literally cheese them by dying. There was on with paramites where you enter and paramites spool down towards you meaning the area has 3 of them and they will just kill you on sight but when you respawn at the checkpoint, they don't spool down, eliminating the entire gimmick of said puzzle

I only found out yesterday that this was on switch! I played this one and Exodus so many times over the years so this is a treat. I love the new look. But I do agree the it kind of takes away from the feel of it. The original felt more gloomy and unsettling in the factory. Someone said it feels less clustered and that’s true but I also think the depth of the background makes you really see just how massive the place is and that actually is unsettling on it’s own. But other than that, the updated graphics and lighting is beautiful! The glowing mushrooms at night and the shadows are such a nice touch. I love looking at it all. The new variations to the phrases by the Sligs are great. Abe also makes too much noise now. Like when he climbs up or is too close to an edge. He also pauses when he gets to an edge which can be annoying if I’m trying to move quicker. I also really like the sneak crawl move that’s been added but the control can get messed up and crawl when I’m trying to quickly roll. I don’t know if I just have muscle memory from playing the original so much but the controls just feel a little weird but I’m getting used to it. I also agree that the sound of him chanting doesn’t sound as interesting as it used to. I also miss that sound it used to make when you died. Like the “you fucked up” sound. I don’t know what to call it but it’s missed. I’m not a huge gamer, I just have a switch and an old 360 so I’m reeeaalllyy happy that it came out on switch. I played to this game today. The creepy atmosphear of rupture farms is clearly missing. Same case for Demon s Souls Remake. I already have the PS5, but I am discovering DS on my PS3... Just get Epsxe and play the originals. The fun is always here.

I think the aesthetic the original had is something that's pretty hard to pull off in modern games. Another good example of this would be something like Silent Hill 2. I think a lot of it's atmosphere would be lost in a modern remake because the older CRT kinda graphics adds to the charm.
@mindstyle133 жыл бұрын
@@loowisk1113 You are right. These creepy games don't look good on ultra-hd TV. Same case for Resident Evil Remake darker on the Game Cube. Another example from these days : The Evil Within, best version is the Xbox 360 version. Moreover, the dancing grass is missing on PS4 / Xbox One versions. The graphics are too sharp instead 360 which has this creepy granulary effect.

While the graphics are obviously much better in the remake, I think the original has way better ambientation, atmosphere, photography... And I think it's even more evident in _Soulstorm._ I don't know, there's just something about the originals. A seriousness in the light and shadows, a raw truth, an honest darkness. It's like the modern videogames are made more friendly, more childish. Also the sound department. Too bad. They look good, but... It's just not as good, it's not the same feeling. Thank you.

The remakes for spyro, crash, medievil, and oddworld all suffer from bad lighting, weak colors, and inconsistently clean textures. I think newer environmental artists are often not as skilled as older gen artists when it comes to atmosphere. Theres a big "less is more" rule they dont understand, and they seem like they dont understand color theory as much. It's why Half-Life 2 still looks better than a lot of new games

I was 17 when Abe odd-world first released. It's amazing how far graphics have come since then. Those pre-rendered graphics seemed so detailed and to now have those graphics even more detailed using polygons it's a testament to the progression of consoles and the video game industry.

They really did a good job making it feel like it did in the 90s. I'm not sure how, but it's exactly like I remember, but it's clearly different when you go over it.

I'd argue the remaster doesn't quite have the same atmosphere. Oddly I like the sound of the original better.

As a fan of the old games, I enjoy both Oddysee and New N Tasty. NnT was the first ps4 game I ever played and it impressed me back in 2014. It may not be as gritty as the original, but the graphics are still great, and lowering the gamma does wonders in achieving a bit more eeriness. Also I think the Switch port is the best of them all, even if it is not 60fps like ps4 or pc

Just out of curiosity, I wonder how another oddworld game would look with 4k pre rendered images for backgrounds and new effects tricks etc. Just to give the feel of the originals. The artwork from the originals are incredible

This is definitely an interesting perspective. For you all of the technical improvements make the game superior to the original. However, I'm on Matthewmatosis' side on this game. A lot of these improvements actually make the game worse. For example the new lighting and bloom make the image much brighter and safe shadow areas much harder to see. They also changed the model of the Slig so that it is now a prey animal instead of a predator. It's just easier for me to see the beauty in the original behind the technological limitations.

This is just another product of "let's get success story and milk it again". Unfortunately here they didn't even add anything substantial in terms of art or atmosphere, only worsen many aspects. I still see older version superior while they both side-to-side. Because older version had tiny details in background art that made your imagination go beyond of what you see. Also it looked darker and felt that it was for more mature player. Whereas this new version looks like for younger generation. In other words, there should be at least something new to make me play this version. The only thing I see is greed and milking. Same story as with Dead Rising 4.

I definitely agree about the sligs. I feel like in the original the art and the audio made all four creatures terrifying, and they felt like threats. In NNT it was difficult to feel threatened by any of them (I was very sad by how they changed the scrab sounds, those were amazing in the og)

Personally I still think the original game is superior in every way. Sure, it looks pixelated, but I like that. The controls felt way better too.

I don't like the sound design in the remake. The voices are really quiet and gunshots don't make as much of an impact and the music in the cutscenes overpower the voiceovers. The remake also has too much bloom. The original was dark and felt much more eerie. The controls are also clunky in the remake. I don't feel as in control with Abe walking or running. Holding a button to toggle between walking, running, or sneaking, felt much better in the original. I don't totally dislike the remake, but it does have its issues that bother me.

I remember playing this in 1999 on my first computer. It was amazing back then. I didn't know much english and i barely understood what the game is about. Now i think it may be a metaphor of industrial society. I'm glad you did this comparison. Nostalgia kicked. Can't wait to see more of your work!

I kind of like the original gritty washed-out style. Looks awesome, like a rusty metal or something. The new one looks like a clean, stainless steel with rust painted over it. It doesn't look as gritty as the original

Kinda think original is slightly better. New one is cool, but i feel there were more grit and horror suspense to the original. But interms of modern camera its very interesting with the new game

I totally disagree. New animation may be realistic, but the old animations in their shadiness and low gestureness definately created the atmosphere. Jusr enough graphic and detail and just enough movement

Maybe it's just nostalgia, but the audio design in the originals is just a masterpiece. Also the new lighting just removes the gritty atmosphere and makes it look like a weird hybrid with other platformers. It just doesn't fit. Overall though It isn't a terrible remake. I just wish there was something more true to the original that I can play without being able to count the pixels.
