THOSE GUZZIS: What goes around comes around.

I've had a few different Guzzis in the last few years. All good bikes and all interesting and wonderful in their own way. But what would possess me to buy a bike I'd had in the past? Senility? Rose-tinted glasses? Who knows? There's only one way to find out.

I have a 2023 V7 Stone and, at 32 years old, I seem to be one of very few younger guys in the U.S. picking up the Guzzi torch. The manager at my local Cycle Gear is in his late 60s and loves to tell me stories about his 1972 El Dorado whenever I'm in to buy this or that. We both agree that MG is the best-kept secret in motorcycling.

I've only owned one Moto Guzzi, a '16 V7 Racer that I took in partial trade on a BMW RnineT.... I didn't have it long as it was a bit compact, but quite liked it. I've had the itch for a Griso for many years now... maybe one day I will scratch that itch.

congrats on the new bike. Gotta keep life interesting, I say. I bought a "modern" Guzzi V7iii Stone that's been giving me fits with occasional stalling, and intermittent starting problems. I'm giving her one more chance to straighten out this coming spring/summer. I have no patience for problems that the dealer service department just scratches their heads over... I've recently re-read all your books, and enjoyed them as much as the first time. Best to you!!!

heydavemyers: sorry to hear about your problems with the Stone. I suspect there's an easy fix if it lands in the hands of the right person. I've heard that 'Beetle' in Australia writes new maps for the ECU which radically improve the performance etc. www.griso.org/?fbclid=IwAR1TBh8rvENuUhVomgUjv7x5cFqJ-QlNPudUzE_1bXsxBPpPWtb6U-g89uw I hope you don't give up on it. I too had a Quota 1100ES, it must be one of the rarest Guzzis out there. Apparently developed by none other than Dr John Wittner. It was a great tourer, a set of delortos would have improved it I reckon. The convert does interest me as a lazy tourer mind.

The 74 Eldo/California was the closest I've got. Those 1400's are very appealing. Rode one once for a very short distance and was impressed with the power but would have to take a much longer ride to see if the ergos suited me. I don't generally find cruisers very comfortable.

Thanks Nick. I have a huge R1200GS LC and a wee Breva 750. I think the Breva is a fantastic bike, with the sculpted tank and really comfy seat, it's practical as well as having real character. I wish I had just bought an 1100 Breva instead of the other two. The big GS is a wonderful motorcycle and has its own character, however, for some reason, I'm getting 'feert' of it...might be the height....getting old: 62 and counting (hopefully😂). Don't know what I'll do in the future but the Guzzi will have to stay, can't put my finger on what it is but I'm smitten!😁😁

Baby dribble? No one I have ever known in Oz ever put ‘T’ into ‘Guzzi’; not even my Italian friends; well at least until the appearance of the hipster movements pretentious co-opting of cool. Maybe if your going to render the pronunciation into text your version should be ‘Gootsie’ with a long ‘o’ sound. Maybe it’s from a different dialect, ‘Melbournese ’ perhaps? Doesn’t really matter what we say just how we feel when we look, hear and ride. Potato potato? Cheers from 65 years in Oz and on my third Guzzi.

You are in all honesty the antithesis of my approaches, and yet I totally admire your keep it simple adventure approach. I'm too much a sucker for torque and acceleration and so chase the latest HP monsters. It's what I love truly most about bikes, their acceleration. Aside, that is, from being out in the elements. But I am an avid backpacker and sailor and sea kayaker so my motorcycle doesn't offer me anything in nature I don't prefer to do another, more natural way. No, I ride mainly on pavement and enjoy the rush of air and the ability to twist the throttle and haul the mail. But my one Guzzi Stelvio was certainly the most interesting bike I've ever owned. Character, yes. But my S1000XR is more my need. Keep up your travels and enjoyment of old bikes.

'Modern' 1,100, huh? That's gotta be a rocket! Even compared to your Suzuki and Honda. I often wonder if i'd like the 750 Nevada. I started on modern 750cc 4-cylinder Kawi that was very fast, have since been retracing my steps back to scooters, 250-300cc bikes, and now the Ural, but something faster is on the horizon, so I can easily outrun cars on an uphill on-ramp. Not sure the Nevada would do? Then ofcourse the modern V7 is just gorgeous... We'll see next year. Enjoy!

I don't know Joeh, if any Guzzi 750 would come close to the performance of any mordern Japanese bike (as the reviewers constantly tell us 😴) but they probably have enough for most sensible street riding. Make sure you get a good test ride but IMHO character trumps performance any day.
@joeh773
@joeh773 8 ай бұрын
@@nick949eldo thanks Nick. Yup, I'm seeing some test rides in my future :) i don't wanna get back quite to the 750 Kawi performance (from almost twenty years ago), it was too tempting. But something that can easily outrun the non-sporty cars when you need to. I never see much on the Nevada anymore, i remember it was never reviewed enthusiastically by those reviewers... Never mind, just thinking/dreaming 'aloud'. Have happy holidays if we don't hear from you until after! I think Santa will bring me one of your books, it will come in handy during the visit at the in-laws around New Year's ;)

Hey, congratulations Nick. A Breva 1100 was my first Guzzi. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn't go far when I traded it in on a 2008 1200 Sport, which is basically the same bike with some sporty cosmetic differences. Once I just learned to accept that the fuel injection and electronic motor control were just going to be a black box, we get along just fine. It's a marvelous handling bike. And that seat looks amazing! Cheers!

Congratulations on the new purchase . Brevas are strange bikes , not quite an old Guzzi and not really modern . One day it looks beautiful the next it looks very homely . I have mixed feelings about mine but can't make the decision to sell it , it's not quite what I wanted from a Guzzi but then again I may regret selling it at a later date . @DBbeat
@DBbeat 8 ай бұрын
@@nick949eldo not to quibble but I regard the 1200 Sport, slightly juvenile relative of the Breva, as the last iteration of the 2 valve big blocks. Rock solid and the most *reliable big Guzzi motor I've had. Moved to it from the 8V 1200 that was disastrous trouble from the get-go. It has to be 2-V all the way. *The newer V7 750 small block has been fairly trouble free. (Hardly a ball of fire for a 750, but it is it what it is and it's decently straight forward, relatively classic and... wire wheels.)

Dear Nick, Could you elaborate on why you miss your Quota ? and was it as high geared (I think you said) ? Thank you
@nick949eldo
@nick949eldo 6 ай бұрын
Hi Alex. The Quota was an excellent long distance touring bike, capable of handling most roads. A bit heavy for anything off road, but the 21inch front wheel and decent ground clearance gave it some ability on rough, potholed gravel. The first gear is long - not great if you want to race, but I liked it. 5th gear was the perfect interstate gear. Effortless at 130kph with the bike barely breathing. Some people want and expect a low geared rocket ship. I prefer a bike with long legs for serious riding. The engine was Guzzi's simple, robust two-valve with basic fuel injection. It's a tall bike, but if you have the legs for it you feel ike a master-of-the-universe.
