100 years of Moto Guzzi motorcycles: - a personal celebration

This is not a history. It is my personal celebration of Moto Guzzi bikes that have come into my life and have brought me pleasure. My bikes are mainly from the seventies (currently 72 Eldorado, 74 750s, 76 Convert). They're robust and capable of being ridden long distances - which is what I try to do when time and other unscheduled interruptions allow. I have nothing against the newer ones - fine bikes all - but it's the older ones that turn my crank.

I bought my first Guzzi in 1974, a v7sport. I've been riding for close to 57 years now and at the age of 72 just bought a Stelvio. This is the sixth Guzzi I have owned plus many other brands over the years. I came back to Guzzi for the sheer joy and character in the ride. Makes me smile every time! I think I have a keeper now.

Congratulations Ron. Guzzis do get under your skin and the v7Sport was a heck of a bike to begin with. Good luck with the Stelvio - lovely bike. Ride safely for many years to come.

Nick, your words have the same solidity as the sound of a Guzzi engine. Very few motorcycle manufacturers manage to be loyal to the consumer and not surrender to the absurdities of the market. One hundred more years for Moto Guzzi !!

This is so hearwarming video. I completely relate. I'm as new as it gets to the MG world, riding my V7 Centenario since February for mere 2,5 thousand kilometers to this day. But I so do understand the appeal of the old models. My soul vibrates whenever I see or hear one. I recognize the Guzzi V twin from afar and turn away from the most beautiful woman just to see the Guzzi pass.. Thank you for this video and enjoy many and many kilometers and many, many more years in the saddle, my friend.

About that, I'm well aware, @@nick949eldo . My friend had a V85 TT sold it for V100, sold it too and now he's considering V85 TT or Stelvio. And we bought the V7 virtually simultaneously, so he now has a V7 and with it will have either V85 TT or Stelvio. I own V7's scooter cousin Beverly 400 for work and should I ever have a garage and spare money, you better don't offer me an old Guzzi for sale cause my GF would be speaking loudly afterwards. Not that it would change anything. 😀

Thanks, man, I liked this "personal celebration"! I am driving Moto-Guzzi all my life...and nothing else than Moto-Guzzi and I do not like to be mecanic and I did not have to be one more than with another bike. I had the Cali II 1982 for 20 years, then a used Cal III IEC 1992 Special Edition for another 20 years and now togehter with the Cali III since 5 years an Eldorado 1400 witch is the most comfortable traveling bike I ever had. But as for you, I still like the old and quite "antique" tecnique and my love for Moto-Guzzi is not a rational thing but it comes from heart and it is lasting now for 40 years with no crises and also no wish of a change. Enjoy your Guzzi´s and sell your other bikes ;-)

can't beat the looks of a Guzzi, just the engine alone is like a beautiful work of art. I've never seen the 750S before it's truly stunning. I think along with the 1000S it's up there as my favourite Guzzi. I have a Moto Guzzi Bellagio 940cc, it has a fantastic engine unfortunately I don't think they exported them to North America , but if you ever get a chance to ride one, I'm sure you would like it.
@nick949eldo
@nick949eldo Жыл бұрын
I think you're right. I don't think NA ever got the Bellagio. The 750s was a one year only model (948 built), but the 750S3 and 1000s were similar, but evolved and less hard edged.

Long story short, I had a moto guzzi v7 III carbon shine last year and at the beginning of this year's riding season, traded it in for a triumph trident that I quickly realized I didn't like as much as the v7 III, then I traded-in the trident for a street twin which I still don't like as much as the v7 III. I am now in the process of getting rid of the street twin and picking up another v7 III. You don't know what you got till its gone.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts . Thumbs up and subscribed . I appreciate your description and appreciation for these machines. I have a few bikes but an older co-worker had a white Lemans back in the day and I always thought the bike was so different . These days I find myself looking at all the Guzzi videos and seem to be drawn to the v7’s . Something pure , simple ,beautiful to me about them . I have a Harley and a few Yamaha’s, and your right the world would be horribly boring if we all had the same taste . Thanks again , I will research into these Guzzi’s and hopefully find the right fit for me .

Dear Nick I couldn't agree more with your comments and kind words for the products of the motorcycle co "going out of business since 1921". You may wonder why I am writing this comment now, 2 years later and after MG surprised us all with a very modern - yet typical Guzzi still - marvel. Well, I haven't been visiting your channel for quite some time. Why? Because I bought a black '73 Eldorado in the US because of YOU! 😇(And rode it instead of following you on KZbin 🤦😄) Watching your videos of riding the 72 Eldorado across Northern Canada made me (using your words...) drooling over adding an Eldorado to my Cali II and Le Mans II Duo. I eventually found one in the US as it was never sold in that fine black Eldorado configuration with the white stripes in Switzterland / Europe. I am truly happy with it and, like you, I can't be bothered by talks about traction control, ABS etc. I avoid highways, travel the back roads and enjoy the rides at the tempo of the time when these wonderful machines were built. Thanks Nick for extending my Guzzi bug to the Eldorado and I wish you many more happy Km's on your beauties! Thomas, Zurich/Switzerland

I always like your videos because you actually use your bikes for their intended purpose. I’m hoping MG puts out something special this year. But you know it’s MG so they will probably just put a sticker on their bikes for their 100 year anniversary. How many companies can say they have been in business for 100 years uninterrupted without a name change.

Excellent, concur pretty much everything with the author. Imo, the lighter the crank, the lighter the flywheel and clutch, the faster the box changed, the more modern the bike got, the less i liked them. I've had a Centauro (wonderful - should never have sold it), and the most modern one i owned was a 2001 V11 (wonderful - should never have sold it...), but i've always kept my full weight crank/flywheel, carb'd Guzzis.... current 89 Cali 3 since 99... They are just "different" and have a soul and character that the new ones can never match....

I will never buy another new Piagio Guzzi since I was shafted with the Stelvio Cam Issue. Twice, before 12000 miles, the cams went. Guzzi took 6 months each time to send the Cams, charged me for the fitting and oil change on both occasions. I Still have the bike that cost me over £8,000, the cams went again for a third time, it’s sitting with only 12000 on the clock, f@cked cams and rusting away to always remind me: “ Never buy a New Guzzi “. Some Guzzi owners took them to court, but they got around it, because of the way Moto Guzzi export their goods! Cunning, very cunning! Have two. A 1976 i convert for the last 7 years and a recently acquired 2003 Cali Stone. These bikes with the Tonti frame handle great and eat up the miles. The bikes have the same sense of permanance that a Harley or BMW have. Ultimately rebuildable and good for many miles once freshened up. Actually in the case of my 76 i convert i wonder if i will ever wear that engine out to the point that it requires a rebuild. Of course it has liners rather than nikasil barrels so i suppose Moto Guzzi like everything else can require more work as cheaper err i mean "more modern" engineering practices are embraced. Still, my Cali Stone is strongly tempting me to hang on and see how many miles she's good for. At age 68 probably a lot more miles than i am but if it keeps on going like it is now it will be a lot of fun finding out.

Great bike choices Gregory. Those iron liners often still show the original honing marks after countless thousands of miles, so you may be right. 68? You have decades of riding ahead of you.

In love with mine after an hour long ride in the cold and rain to pick it up for my wife. I stole it. She needs a new bike. V7, only 48HP. Have a 200HP bike I like quite a bit less. They are great and truly have something special.

Power isn't everything , is it? Sometimes the feel of a machine more than makes up for any short-falls in overall performance. For me, at least, speed and riding pleasure don't equate.

Another good video. Much viewing pleasure. Currently sitting at 5 old bikes, which I feel is probably at the outside of my comfort level(being a minimalist) I'm thinking of adding one brand new bike to take me into my hopefully fuss free golden years. As you could well imagine the stakes are quite high choosing one from a short list. Do you have a recommendation for favourite online Moto Guzzi forum? TIA.

Thanks. For a broad spectrum of Guzzi enthusiasm and knowledge it's hard to beat wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?board=1.0 It's fairly global (with a slight US bias) but is TOTALLY free of politics because it is heavily and skillfully managed. Some people on there have decades of Guzzi experience but it welcomes newcomers too. I find any of the FB forums flit by far too quickly.

Hi Nick, I am picking up a 1972 Eldorado today. Could you share what you did to convert the light switch to a Yamaha switch. I am 67 this will be my first Guzzi after many years of Yamaha,Honda,Triumph and Harley.

Good luck with your Eldorado. I'm assuming the chrome bores have been done? This is the switch I used. www.mgcycle.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=37_140&products_id=183 Very easy to install, but keep the old one safe for the rivet counters should you sell the bike. Guzzis don't feel like any other bike, so give it time and lots of miles. Eventually, it will get under your skin. Safe riding. Nick

I think you need to add another Moto Guzzi to your collection; the "Le Mans"; Of course, not many here know why Moto Guzzi is using that name. After all, I am almost certain everybody has heard about "les 24 heures du Mans", which is as famous as a car race as "Le Tour de France" is for bicycles. I case you did not know, there is a 24 hours race for motorcycles too. It is named "Bol d'Or". In 1971, Moto Guzzi participated to the Bol d'Or and they maintained the head of the race for 10 of the 24 hours. Unfortunately, they broke a rod. In 1972, the Moto Guzzi held the top of the roster for 18 hours, and finished 4th. To me, the le Mans presented on the Milan Motor show of 1975 is the symbol of the brand. 19 years of Le Mans... this is the bike you need, and possibly a good theme for your next podcast...

Good Lord....moto guzzis from the 70's. And yes, despite your attempts to head off such comments, I bet your auto electrician is very busy and very rich. Such old bikes, such old Italian bikes, and I reckon I am in your age group having ridden bikes for 40 years, I would not touch them with a barge pole. I note you do not mention the repairs and work done. Also interesting you somehow managed to get a green card for the USA......a nigh on impossible task for anyone non famous or non wealthy from the UK. I recently bought a new Ducati. I could have stayed in the past, perhaps like the old stage coaches tried to do with the dawn of the motor car, but it has all the old virtues. ....air cooled V twin, ample performance, marvelous character...... but, also goes around corners, has modern electrics and ABS, which could well mean the difference between coming off and staying on.
@nick949eldo
@nick949eldo 3 жыл бұрын
Wow. I think you missed the point entirely. Firstly I'm in Canada, not the US. Don't need a Green Card. Don't ever want one. Old Moto Guzzis can be incredibly reliable and parts availability is second to none. The complete wiring harness was replaced by me on the Eldorado a few years ago. Everything works. The only issues with any of the bikes ever arise because of my own shoddy maintenance and casual attitude. New bikes just don't interest me - and Ducatis never have. I ride the old Eldorado because it pleases me. It has nothing to do with reliability, performance, style or much of anything else. But each to his own. It's a big world.
