I do know a couple who when very young moved across country to NYC for what they knew would be a relatively short time. No money, jobs with big firms for resume building. They had a small couch and a mattress on the floor with all the rest of their “furniture” made from packing boxes. Because they were very creative they somehow made it charming for the year they were there. It was openly a case of “this is what we can afford to do” and not something anyone would want long term.

Yeah, my mom sometimes makes personalized cups dipped in resin and with glitter. Mine was designed with the them of the Naruto anime, but she's mostly done ones with sports teams on them. I don't feel the glitter that's on the cup and it's very smooth. Now the glitter vase my mom also gave me at the same time as the cup...I love her, I like the vase, but it is an absolute glitter cascade. I keep it shoved inside multiple containers in my closet to avoid its fury, lol. I might ask if she can coat it too in resin because otherwise, I sadly will have to let it go.

I agree IF you have transportation for the dresser. That to me is the problem for those of us who don't have people to help move items for very little money. When you go to a new area and get a new job, that could be what stops you from thrifting large items, that and living alone above the first floor. :) You might have to weigh your options and go for lightweight, or perhaps small furniture that all together add up to enough storage, or ordering new or amazon warehouse slightly damaged with free delivery. However, the project we saw is for kids, like the British show Blue Peter. There used to be several US shows that also included crafts for kiddies once a week, while adults at home laughed at the mangled mess with glue all over, and the ending of, "Here's one that is already finished." :D

Even if you can't afford even Ikea, go to a thrift store and find something well built that will be nice with a good coat of paint and maybe new hardware. That's what I do. I do use plastic drawer units, but only to hold my craft supplies. The chair to table would be o.k. if it was a curb find. I've done things like that with freebies I found next to my apartment's dumpster. Not a bad idea for something temporary, like for a dorm room or first apartment. I'm amazed at how some of these crafters fix up freebie or thrift finds. I'm not that good at it myself, which is why I am a cottage style person. All I have to do is find something that is stable and solid wood and slap a coat of white paint on it. LOL

Came here to say this!! I love love love reusing and repurposing furniture. Almost all of my household is thrift. I usually spring for new linens and window coverings though…unless it’s funky. I don’t paint wood furniture. Big no for me, but i get the attraction for others. And like any self respecting frugal thrifter, there’s not much better than finding some old funky piece of furniture for a couple of bucks. A thrift house is organic and alive and never boring. I can buy a table for 10 bucks, use it for 10-15 years and then bring it back when I find another. #no beige

@@juanajuana4404 I need to clarify. I only paint cheap wood furniture, or something that is pretty far gone and not worth refinishing. OR anything like a waterfall piece with inlay if it's at all salvageable.

The glitter in that resin will never go anywhere, it’s locked in the resin forever. However, resin itself can be dangerous and shouldn’t be used without precautions which 5 Minute Crafts doesn’t warn you about. Working with resin can be messy too. It does take practice.

This was hilarious and all of these were bad except for the glitter. Putting the glitter in resin makes it permanent. It’s completely encapsulated and can’t ever go anywhere forever. But it still shouldn’t be used as home decor. I would make a table for my 3-year-old granddaughter because she’s three and she likes glitter. And I would tell her that all the glitter in the world is in her table so there isn’t any more glitter for her to put anyplace else. Which probably makes me a bad grandmother, but she and I do paints and playdoh and gardening, so maybe I’m not!🌸

@@653j521 lol - that’s why I said to mix it with resin. It’s inside the resin. It won’t come off because it’s inside the clear, hard, shiny surface of the resin. I have glitter in my house from my daughter’s wedding which was 12 years ago!😂😂😂 It just shows up. I’m pretty sure it’s multiplying somewhere until a small puff of air dislodges it from its hiding place. Last week I saw a speck of glitter (red) along the edge of the garbage disposal switch. It’s never going away - but if it’s encased in resin it can never escape bwahahahaha!😸🌸

cutting the back off a chair to make a table - how many chair seats are actually flat enough to be a table? I mean, there have been instances where I've had to try to put a glass on a chair and it's very rarely worked out well, chair seats are almost always sloped if not contoured? I think my favourite is actually the glitter in epoxy - that glitter is so set in there, it's never coming out and going anywhere. If someone wants glitter that's the safest way to house it without it spreading!

Re the burlap art: I once saw where an art teacher did a similar project w her students, but it was way cooler. Each kid had a 8 x 10 photo of themselves that they traced with a sharpie onto acetate. Then they used acrylic paint and painted on the reverse side of the acetate. They could choose any colors they wanted and most of them did, so the result was very colorful and modern. That is hilarious. I wanted to see how long we have had glitter in our lives: "Modern glitter as we know it was invented in 1934 by a New Jersey cattle rancher named Henry Ruschmann. Henry also dabbled as a machinist. His hobby led to the accidental discovery of a process that used a machine to precisely cut plastic films into thousands of tiny pieces. All those tiny pieces of plastic eventually became the product we now call glitter. Ruschmann started a company called Meadowbrook Inventions to produce glitter in large quantities. His company is still in business today and is one of the world's largest manufacturers of glitter." Meanwhile, billions of microplastics have entered the environment because of a machinist's accidental discovery. (Apparently mica made things sparkly in centuries past.)

Agreed, they are so many levels of just no. Also, false advertising as pretty much none of it takes 5 mins. I'm an upcycler and it's farcical to watch. The glass art like you said, the devil is in the detail, so definitely more than 5 mins. It's a glass chalk pen like they use for shop windows, about £1 (I'm in the UK) for 1. Have used them, they're great. As for the epoxy art, it would take 5 mins to properly measure and mix your resin, let alone mix glitter into multiple amounts. Also, epoxy requires safety equipment... like gloves! The travesty that was cutting up a perfectly good chair. Not even sanding the sawn edges and just spray painting. Erm, no sanding to key the surface or primer. The only thing to be learnt is how not to do things properly and probably injure yourself in the process 🤦🏾‍♀️

These all look like teen projects--what new use can I discover for objects around me, (adults please supervise and advise!), which develops creativity but adults need to raise the bar on what they want in their own environment.

Things like the DIY dresser or coffee table- even Facebook Marketplace! I have gotten some amazing quality furniture (Basset, Ethan Allen, Karastan) for way less than I’d even pay at Ikea. Yes it takes time and effort to keep checking to see what’s been posted, wait for something you like, not outdated, good condition. But so worth it! A Karastan wool rug for $75, EA king size solid wood 4-poster bed for $100. One woman was selling a $22k VIKING STOVE for $800.

Epoxy can be pretty tricky though to do safely with kids. You need goggles, gloves and a really well ventilated space. Also that pouring is a really easy way to ruin a table, rug or the floor. Though I guess it would be ok, as long as the kids don't do it on their own.

I've literally never payed for a dresser. If you're trying to save money, you can get one on Facebook marketplace for free or very cheap. The cost of the wood planks would be more than just doing that. The chair idea was actually my favorite. I've found lots of perfectly good chairs out by the dumpster. Personally, I hate burlap. Hate the color. Hate how cheap it looks, but to each their own. That was definitely a paint pen. I do appreciate that you could do that with a dollar tree frame if you had to. (Personally, I think goodwill is a better place to source some decent frames.) Melting plastic is by far the worst one. Plastic emits fumes when it reaches its melting point. If you're that strapped for cash, go to your local ReStore and pick up a couple of tiles. Boom. You've got coasters that actually look nice.

At 9:54, they used a paint pen which makes way more durable markings than the likes of sharpies. Since it's oil-based paint, it comes in a variety of colors too that can complement other background colors too. Especially since it appears that the line art is done on the back side of the glass, it seems like it'll be a durable craft project! Love the absolute SASS in this video, absolutely hilarious! 😂

As someone who has a garage full of power tools, three sewing machines, and a dad who's idea of fun is doing home improvement projects and building customized furniture, I have to remind myself that not everyone understands how to actually make things. Like that table made of plastic hangers, why not just go buy table legs, brackets, some wood and varnish? It will last longer, look better, and not fall over with the slightest bump. The dresser, why not just go renovate a thrift store or yard sale item? A little sanding followed up with paint or wallpaper plus new pulls and you have a customized dresser with drawers that actually stay on the glide and no exposed screws. And then I remember that a lot of folks also don't know how to change a tire but own a car, so....

I just found you and subscribed! This video cracked me up. 1. I tell you that "box" stool wouldn't hold me up. 2. Coat hanger table would take hellava lot longer than 5 mins to make. Ditto drawers "you're overestimating what I can do in 5 minutes." I tried off & on for years to be a "crafter" because it looks like fun. I've finally accepted the fact that all it accomplishes is a lot of money wasted, a lot of mess to clean up, and not much to show for it. We just sold a house I'm not fond of and we're moving into a house we love. I look forward to learning a lot from you.

You can always find cheaper priced but higher quality furniture in vintage/goodwill/garage sales/online. Sometimes you can find stuff that is way better in quality and half the price! You can modernize dressers and side tables with a bit of paint and new hardware (that you can find on the cheap as well). If you are good at hunting and have a bit of vision you can totally decorate your whole place with DIY that looks custom. Without spending hundreds. Of course certain pieces (like a mattress for your bed or a couch) you def want to save as much as you can and but those new (better quality). But tables, storage, decor, etc. you can always make yourself. My trick for people who don't knew where to start is to tell them to go on Pinterest, make a board of design inspo (things they like), look out for patterns in your likes (maybe you're into BoHo or traditional or eclectic, etc.), and then find out how people DIY those specific items you like. It will give you a starting point for when you are ready to hunt/shop around.
