An excellent point that needs to be made more often. Disability is the one minority group that anyone can join at any time, and if their houses aren't fit for a disabled person to live in - whether using a wheelchair, or blind, or with extreme fatigue, or any other disability - then they're going to have to deal with either renovating or selling in a hurry on top of coming to terms with their new lifestyle. All my house designs are structured around the idea that every house can expect a disabled person to be living in it at some stage in its design life. If a parent in a wheelchair can't cook and serve dinner and then read the kids goodnight, the house failed.

That conch shell is precious, especially the big ones from Florida from decades ago. They are now a protected endangered species. They were over-fished to the point where a large one is a treasure. Just don't go all nautical themed in there and it can be an elegant addition. I have a completely plain and natural eight inch diameter oyster shell with all the beautiful mother-of-pearl inside that my mother picked up along the Gulf Coast about 80 years ago, and it is a family treasure. She always kept very pretty rough and delicious scented hand-made balls of soap in there (sandalwood? cedar?), but I think it is beautiful just clean, shiny, and empty on an open shelf, perhaps next to a potted plant or a geode or unusual driftwood, in a triptych.

Serious personal pet peeve of mine in bathrooms is shower DRAIN placement. It drives me crazy when I go to a hotel, friend's house, etc and the drain is right in the middle of the shower stall and I have to constantly stand with my feet spread out and walk around and over the drain to avoid stepping on it. Please contractors, just put the drain in a corner and slightly slope towards it. Right in the middle is SO awkward to not step on. Yuk.
@PolkaLuriaКүн бұрын
Is that because you are worried your feet will stop the waterflow into the drain, or because you are worried the strainer at the top will break if you put weight on it, or because you feel the drain is dirtier than the tiles next to it so you wouldn't want your feet to touch it, or are the drains you think of uncomfortable to step on? Or something else? I have never put any thought whatsoever in if I'm stepping on the drain or not in the shower, I probably have one foot on it all the time, so I didn't understand this comment.
@MasterClassterКүн бұрын
@@PolkaLuria It's a bit of a combination of all of that. I prefer to have my foot on solid consistent surface like the tiles rather than a very hard drain that has holes or is a grate which is uncomfortable on my foot. But mostly it's about the 'yuk' factor. It's like if you have food in your kitchen sink, it's not the same as if that same food was sitting on the sink drain hole. I realize the underside of my foot isn't going to exactly suck up a bunch of bacteria off the drain but it still feels a bit gross to stand on the drain where all the soap and dirt and hair go and bacteria accumulate. With these centre placed drains, I'm constantly standing around and over them trying not to step on them. It just feels so awkwardly placed, I can't relax.

Love this one Nick. We remodeled our main floor bathroom last year, and one thing I'm so glad we included is a shower head that doubles as a hand-held sprayer. I LOVE these for cleaning and rinsing our walk-in shower. This was such a revelation I ended up putting them in our other bathrooms. Also, IMO, it's a mistake when renovating a bathroom not to think about safety as we age. Our remodeled bathroom was done for my husband who has mobility issues. Our new walk-in shower is small but we installed a wall-mounted, fold-down teak bench seat that flips up when not in use (fantastic space saver.) We also added a large grab bar in the shower, and another one just outside the shower so my husband can hold on to it when he's getting in and out. It also doubles as a towel bar.

One of my daughters stayed in a high-end hotel on a business trip. Beautifully done bathroom - with gorgeous tile floors. Yep, she slipped and messed up her back. For myself, and my late husband, when we moved into our new home several years ago, we had my 92 yo mother with us and had her bathroom set up for safety. At the time, we decided to have our bathroom set up for our future, which happened faster than we anticipated. So, our low threshold step in showers have bars to hold onto, and "little perches" to sit on. I have some relatives who, although getting old(er) like us, remodeled their beautiful bathrooms, but no bars (that could have looked like really nice towel bars)! Horrors. That would have "spoiled the effect" they were going for! Oh well, it's their beautiful tiles that may get cracked when they go to install them later on. Yep, largish tiles in the shower - and on the floor. (Poles work well also. You can say you are going to practice pole dancing or something.) You do have to think about these things for all ages, like broken legs / arms / hips, unexpected surgeries that leave one weak and shaky especially if you are planning on living there for a long time. Even youngish people have these issues. Even some hospitals don't take these things into their plans. Yep, I'm an RN and lately I have done Home Visits for people of all ages who have met up with one issue or another that, with some creative forethought, could have had their lives made a little safer and more manageable. And don't even think about choosing a tub (so lovely to soak in) and not having a separate shower. Just wait til you get to the point where you can't get out of the tub! God forbid having to call for help, or 911 (Help! I've fallen and I can't get up)! I realize that some don't have the means or the ability to make these choices if they live in rented/leased apartments or homes. But there are ways to make things safe, and nice too. As for storage, I have too much, I think. You know what they say about leaving a bare, empty space without filling it up. I'm working on that problem now. My kids are on my case about too much stuff (for them to throw out when I'm gone) like my husband's stuff that we/they are still going through 3 years later.

The subtitle of this video should be "10 reasons you need a medicine cabinet." People always forget to leave room in their budget for a medicine cabinet (precisely because it overlaps several subcontractors) but C'MON ... these days a good one is storage, lighting, electrical outlets, decor, AND mirror all in one. The reason people pile stuff on the counter is because they don't have a medicine cabinet. Shift a little $ from each of those budgets and get a really good medicine cabinet, and it'll be one of the most-used items in there.

In the shower I used wetboard in elm and a composite wood bench. It is double width with rainfall and hand shower. I put the suspended toilet 3 inches higher. The sink is slightly lower and is cleverly next to a shelf area so I can prop myself up if standing. The bath has a sling lift that I've painted black to help it melt into the wall behind. I have a black floor and blush walls. I put a glass panel of stacked stones over the bath, which makes the room! I also had a partition wall to create a laundry room. I've had the machines placed on drawer units, so I don't have to bend to load them. There is tonnes of storage and I think it's come out wonderfully.

Agreed. I don't store much in the bathroom, too steamy. I have a large hall cupboard by the bathroom door with all my linen and back-up toiletries and toilet paper, among other things. After all there has to be a linen store anyway, so why not include the towels? Medicine is in the kitchen because taken at mealtime.

Re: UK Bathrooms, you will find 2 pin 115v/230v "shaver sockets" in bathrooms in the UK, they are 2 pin (not 3 pin as standard for the mains outlets) to differentiate them, all bathroom electric products will be sold with this 2 pin plug. Shaver sockets have a protector circuit to limit the current that can be drawn from them, so things like electric tooth brush and shaver etc will work fine. Obviously if you go to an older house that hasnt had a large scale renovation e.g. rewiring electric circuits etc a fairly typical situation then you wont see a dedicated shaver socket. I`ll copy and paste this good technical description: Shaver sockets contain a transformer which isolates the mains supply from earth. The voltage is the same, or 115V for the centre-tapped output. If you were to touch one of the two output pins, then you would not get a shock - you're connected to ground, but the output side of the transformer isn't. So no current would flow, and you'd remain unfried. The transformer can only carry a relatively small amount of current (enough to run a shaver or toothbrush), so is designed to stop you from plugging in normal devices, such as a hairdryer. Of course, you could still get a shock if you touched both pins at the same time, but it would be localised to your finger. Some would argue that more modern circuit breakers (e.g. Residual Current Devices) negate the need for a transformer-isolated socket. However, most domestic RCDs are designed to trip at 30mA, i.e. ten times what will kill you.

I have those flush wall mounted mirror/medicine cabinets in every one of my bathrooms. I absolutely love them, they hold a tun of stuff, they organize everything upright and can be seen at a glance. I don’t care one hoot if they are in or out of fashion! Personally I despise having all those bath and grooming supplies rolling around and dripping 💩 all over the inside of my drawers. More power to the covered open shelving concept Nick!😊

Get an experienced tiler. A good tiler can make the cheapest tile look great, and a bad tiler can make the most expensive tile look bad. Always center the tile on any focal wall, be it the shower, behind the vanity or kitchen backslash, and work out toward the edges. For niches, built in benches and curbs, using the same solid surface as the counter top is cohesive and provides no grout lines and ALWAYS make sure that these surfaces slope toward the shower so that the water does not collect in the back of the niche or bench or on the floor outside of the shower. It can create expensive mold and water damage. Finally, raw tile edges are not attractive. Schluter makes beautiful edging and don't settle for chrome or black at Home Depot. They make every color and texture to blend in with your tile.

Huge agree on the pedestal sinks! The builder for the townhouse neighborhood I live in put pedestal sinks in the ground-floor powder rooms, and it’s super frustrating not having a vanity to hide extra soap and toilet paper in.

I have a three-door medicine cabinet in my main bathroom, and I LOVE IT!!! I don't keep medicine there, but my bathroom has NO drawers, so that storage is prime for toothpaste, toothbrush, moisturizer, sunscreen, perfume, makeup brush cleaner, eye drops, etc. The countertop is supper small, so I have to be selective regarding what goes on the counter (hand soap, etc ). I def. use the storage area below the sink, so no pretty pedestal sinks around here. I have a basket for hair care and make-up that sits on the toilet tank's top when I am getting ready. It has a spot in the slim closet in the bathroom, so it can all be put away (and then the back of the toilet is easier to clean).

Thank you Nick, you’ve hit all of my pet peeves about bathrooms. But, most importantly, omg! Sconces! I’ve completely forgotten about bathroom sconces but that is exactly where I need to go next to make myself happy. I’ve been so angry with the lighting in my bathroom and each imagined cure actually does nothing. I was about to get hubby to sink the medicine cabinet into the wall, hoping that would help. But sconces will bring me peace! Maybe, since he’ll be messing around in there anyway, he’ll be willing to sink the medicine cabinet in the wall!

I was thinking today about how a pedestal sink would give more room in my bathroom for maneuvering a knee scooter or a wheelchair in the future. My main floor bathroom is really a powder room. Right now I have a 2-dr. cabinet with a sink in it.

I used to have a very cluttered bathroom sink. In our new house, I made a committment: one basket for makeup, in which I put the things I use most frequently, and one basket for hair products, again for my go-to favourites. The baskets are stored on a shelf next to the tub. Everything looks neat and tidy and this system has been working for me for 6 months. As Nick advises, choose a strategy that is not utopian, but that will work with your true lifestyle.

I love medicine cabinets for stuff not actual medicine and when I built had a hard time finding one. My main bath has a floating vanity which I love, two big drawers underneath. The only thing on the vanity is liquid soap and a box with individual hand towels. Both my baths are smallish spaces and the main includes my washer and dryer and a shoe closet.

I wish we would have done medicine cabinet when we redid our bathroom. Instead, I went with tilting mirrors, which I do like as a short person but not as much as I would have liked medicine cabinets.

We owned a 1907 American Foursquare in SD, with one bathroom for a family of 5, a cast iron clawfoot tub - no shower - with a pedestal sink. There was a large inset medicine cabinet with a mirror. The only way we made it work was a large vintage storage wall cabinet which we hung above the toilet. Thank goodness we moved back east before our three girls hit adolescence. It was charming and historic, but not practical. I did have a vintage vanity set in my bedroom, which held all my makeup/jewelry/perfume

Love your videos, fun, real, right to the point and I want to ad that a tiny touch of OCD, just a touch does not hurt, the saying: A place for everything and everything on it's place is my motto, I could not live with some of those bathrooms wit a million things spread all over the place...we need function but function and beauty can go hand in hand.

I was in the mortgage business for many years. In the 70s-80s real estate appraisers took value off of a property for having pedestal sinks. Probably because they were outdated and people didn’t want them.

I'm currently doing a master bathroom remodel on my own. I took it down to the studs, ripped out and reframed in new windows, plumbing, electrical, and so on. I have to say, if anyone buys something from kohler, their customer service is impeccable! Long story short, they will go above and beyond to fix an issue without being asked (ie: we've refunded your order, and are resending the product)

Go back and look at the photo of the person on their hands and knees cleaning the grout. Now multiply that event with small pattern tiles. Did that once, never again. But there are a lot of really good design ideas that work best when you can leave soon after, or just regularly remodel. Similarly, pay attention to the floor of your shower or tub. The plastic ones have an integral textured surface for safety, and most will be impossible to easily clean as a result. I try to avoid “benefitting” from the use of power tools to clean bathrooms. :)
@lisamo1013Күн бұрын
I agree so much on the small tiles. I don't know how it's in the US and Canada but where I'm from it's super easy to pick tiles for the bathroom because they will have a certain roughness rating (R10 B). As long as they have that then they are perfectly fine to use in bathrooms, even in showers (instead of a shower base).

@lisamo1013Күн бұрын
@@thenexthobby glossy and textured tiles give off very different vibes, so if you want your bathroom to look glam I'd stick with glossy on the walls but otherwise, yeah, works just fine. I'd even say it can make it more cosy because it brings in more texture.

Towel rails/safety rails - I would love to see a really sturdy mounting for towel rails that are arms-length from the shower or bath, so if someone slips they could safely grab the rail & not tear it off the wall. I am actually surprised in this day & age, where there are so many rules/codes for everything, that safety rails in bathrooms is not a thing. 😮

I 100% agree on drawers being superior to cabinets, but one thing of note if you want drawers under a sink: you'll very likely need to modify the under-sink plumbling so that it doesn't extend down into the drawer space. Not hard to do really, but something to consider.
@Sabena-pl3cwКүн бұрын
Why? Just have a cutout drawer. Much cheaper than replumbing.
@ashleys637Күн бұрын
@Sabena-pl3cw Not really. I'm in no way a plumber and I did it for less than $50. All you need is a handheld tool to cut pvc, the pvc fitting, and the right adhesive. You aren't working within walls or soldering metal. Also, that would be one helluva cutout in the drawer to make original plumbing work. It would basically render the top drawer or 2 almost useless.

I lucked out with the bathroom design and layout that I inherited when I purchased my home. Plenty of drawer storage , inset medicine cabinet, and an overall cohesive design. No credit to me, it has passed the Nick test. ❤
