Regarding hospitals vs spas: I work in a children's hospital. Specifically, one that wins awards every year for being one of the prettiest children's hospitals in the country. Decent color theory definitely makes a difference. Nothing too distracting/overwhelming, but this hallway has yellow walls, the carpet in this waiting room has a fun pattern, the lobby has this colorful sculpture thing hanging from the ceiling that looks cool with the patterns on the floor.... etc. Every time I go to a regular hospital or doctor's office that isn't focused on kids, I wonder why we hate adults. There's not really a good reason for a hospital to be visually depressing, and it's honestly better for patients' wellbeing for the space to be more pleasant.

For real - I’m genuinely curious as to whether there are any studies out there about hospitals that have been designed to be more nourishing environments and whether patients have responded more positively to that!

@@jennasamuel8637 I'd be hard pressed to find it now, but I remember hearing about an old study observing the outcomes for patients in a room with a window or a nice painting vs a room with just bare walls. The patients with a view recovered faster than the ones without anything

There is evidence nice design actually improves mental well-being as well as recovery in a kindly designed hospital. Think plants, natural colors, plenty of sunlight, music and art Most of these aspects are studied by those who specialize in health communication. However many hospitals find it illogical to invest in the design of the building. Fortunately, some hospital administrators can be convinced when it comes to kids at least. Although that’s not consistent. The hospital I went to as a kid was pretty much different shades of gray and blue with nurses in colorful scrubs.

There are studies showing nicer decor helps, a window with a view of a tree too. Just rough to keep sterile, and deal with ligature risks etc

No matter the design style, clutter is the one thing that brings me down faster than anything else in a room. I cannot stand a cluttered, overly stuffed or disheveled area. It’s so depressing. I can be happy with darker colors or lighter colors, depending upon the room and its use.

I hate visible light cords, electrical plugs in the center an empty wall (off center is not nearly as bad), wall vents and proud light switch covers. Usually I just have the painter paint over them with regular latex paint. In my tiny powder room on side wall near my focal point mirror and under my sconces is an electric plug and double light switch like 14" apart so double the ugly. I found clear plastic outlet covers you can fit inside with wallpaper so the plastic is on the outside. I painstakingly cut the wallpaper to continue the pattern on the wallpaper pattern which is more difficult than it sounds because the inside of the covers curve and the wallpaper image is of course flat. Plus the pattern is printed on woven grasscloth which is difficult to cut. The paper hanger offered to do them for 100 a piece. I wasn't paying 200 dollars for something I couldn't see. She would have never put the effort in that I did anyway. When I was done it was perfect and the covers disappear into the wall.

This is why I like your channel. You can funny and snarky and honest about what you don’t like, without being completely oblivious of what is personal preference, life circumstances, and financial situation. I am all for judging trends and decor, but not for the implication of judging people behind them or snobbery disguising itself behind “art”.

I thought I’d tell you this. About 30yrs after my mother died, I inherited a china cabinet. I didn’t want it, but it had sentimental value to me. I have carted it around on each house move. I even took it to Spain when we left England. Every time I thought I could let it go, I changed my mind. I decided a week ago that it had to go. I asked around to see if anyone wanted it, but no. In Spain people put unwanted items by the bin so we decided we would do the same. I was cringing at the thought that it would go as rubbish, but hay ho! ten minutes after dropping it off it had gone. I know now it’s with someone who liked it. I feel so much lighter and know that it was the right thing to do. My mother and the memories are in my heart.

Love this video, Nick because it's so true. I got rid of a desk that I used to settle an estate. It became so depressing to look at even though it was a very nice desk. I gave it away to a young guy who was going to use it for his environmental organization. Now I have good memories of that desk.

I used to have a big sofa that I was given by a friend when she upgraded her furniture. It was big and a bit smelly, and we kept an old curtain over it to cover the torn spots in the upholstery. I didn't get rid of it because I disliked it, but because our family grew and what had been the living room became a bedroom, so there wasn't room in the house for a big sofa any more. But I gave it to another friend who could afford to get it re-upholstered (and very thoroughly professionally cleaned!) and she has been using it ever since. It gives me a joy every time I sit on it at her place that I never got from it when it was mine!

Loved your advice - loos that are not clean really make me shudder, so what I do is every week put some denture cleaning tablets down the loo and leave overnight - it works. About once every 6 months where the water hits the toilet bowl I clean off the suzzy limescale with Kilrock Gel, leave it for 10 mins then scrub with an old toothbrush. Shiny loos all year!

If plants are too much for some, there is the option of putting a single leaf in a clear vase (always lots of those for cheap in thrift stores). Monstera, Aspidistra, Anthurium , Eucalyptus and numerous other leaves can be very effective as well as dramatic displayed this way. Grasses, too, can make a wonderful and soothing show. A florist can be a helpful guide to good choices.

The advice to have at least one clutter free space in your home is good. If you have a lot of pets or small children, it can be so overwhelming to go from one room to another to another that’s littered with toys, equipment, etc. Realistically you can’t keep more than one room clean and tidy at all times, but it’s such an oasis to have that one uncluttered room to relax in while the hurricanes continue to spread throughout the rest of the house.

Absolutely lovely video! I'm so happy you did this. Shows your consideration towards different situations people are in, co living or affordability. You are a wonderful human. Reason I say this is because I've been in this position and so have my friends. We sometimes visit someone's home and are in awe of how beautiful it is. But ourselves arent in a situation or economically cannot afford to have that. But that does not mean we need to live poorly. Your shop your home and cover it up works perfectly to get that new fancy feeling. And i hope people don't forget your home needs to work for you. Function is important over just overall trendly looks. Clean clutterfree function is good. I've had few neighbors comment on why my layout is so different in my rental. Ive switched my living room and dining room. The sun room area is my partners office. It works for us. We work from home. We dont need living room and tv as central theme to our home. We barely watch a an hour at night. The switching gives us so much more empty room, which i agree in traditional sense looks empty weird, but works out amazing for us. We play with our cat like crazy in it. It helps us just lie on the cool floor in summers. We are asian and floor makes us happy in weird way. Its functional for us.

I'm super depressed at the moment and yes I got therapy and meds sorted out, but I found a few days where I had the energy to change my living room around and stuff like sectioning off my work area from the relax area, white colors and furniture to hide clutter, and cleaning help me heal so much! And I felt dumb getting a faux plant at first (can't have real, my cat eats them and I always forget to water, especially when depressed) but it made me so happy I got a few more. Now it is calm but still lively here and all I see is things that make me happy in a bright room (and cozy at night due to good lighting). All these tips are so valid, even though I just discovered them after being done redoing my living room. Try out what your energy allows folks, it absolutely helps.

Thank you for this unexpected video! But it is so true. Clutter has been my issue for years now. I'm finally getting my house in order after my husband retired and we are planning on moving, but it still feels better to actually see my home. And my mental health has been improving. Taking those few minutes in the morning to make my bed has given me some of the control over my own well being that I've needed. And making a few changes at a time has changed my bedroom into a more relaxing place.

Fantastic video!! Bravo!!! I enjoy colour - it truly has an effect on my mood. I have a deep cherry accent bedroom wall. I have repeated the red hue in different shades from shiraz wine to true red. In the guest bedroom l have a dark deep velvet green wall that highlights the greens of the wall tapestry and cushions. My son chose a blue-indigo for his bedroom so that he could feel he's in a 'crab's lair', marine space. My spare room has a gold yellow wall to reflect more light as it has only one narrow window. Outdoors l have a teal accent brick wall with metallic wall framed art. You can see that wall before you enter the kitchen / dining open area, and it makes me smile. Visitors get a WOW moment too. I heartily agree with making a house personal so that it is a home. Photos, sentimental items, favourite travel mementos and books tell stories of you, your family and friends. Yes to open up your blinds and curtains to let in natural light and open windows and doors on pleasant days for a fresh breeze to flow through the home.

Anxiety stems from lack of being in control. So if we can be in control of our own environment, or at least feel in control, it calms us. This means that we can't have things unaccounted for and laying around everywhere. We can't have areas like a kitchen sink where there are dishes piled up that might cause bad smells or even bacteria to grow. Organize your home so you know exactly where everything is. I put a sticky note inside every drawer that lists all of the items inside it. at least remeber the category of item that goes there and take anything out that doesn't. You might say this is OCD, but I am actually not a super clean person. It required a LOT of self training.

Please get rid of things that you associate with unpleasantness. It helps so much. If it has a smell or a color that you associate with a toxic person dump it, no matter how valuable it is. Don’t give it to someone in your circle of friends because you will have the same reaction if you go to their house. Or if you see it on them (like jewelry).

I started a new job in a lovely but incredibly bare open-plan office and kept on getting super anxious and couldn't figure out why, to the point I was having to walk out a block to the local park for a minute to be able to calm down and focus... realised I needed the outside time and changed my computer background from the bright default to a lovely rainforest and felt instantly calmer, haven't had a problem since. My parents were older when they had me and their parents were older when they had them. I was grandparent-less by the age of 12 and where did all their stuff go when they passed? To us. Where did all my mom's stuff go when she passed? Stayed in our house. We haven't had the time and energy to get rid of stuff and a lot of it is antiques which we don't want to just donate and yard sales are a lot of work (let alone selling online). I can clean my room and in two days I can hardly walk in it. We have too much stuff and it drives me insane but its too big of a tackle to do on my own simply for the fact that my dad doesn't want me going through his and his folk's stuff but then is too lazy to work on going through any of it himaelf. A cluttered house can 100% break your spirit.

You can put stuff on the curb and write a note on a piece of cardboard with a marker that says, for example FREE mini trampoline. People will take it

We almost exclusively use prints of the film photography my husband and I have taken over the years as artwork in our home or vintage prints and paintings we’ve collected!

My dad lives in a small one bedroom and has a ton of stuff. He might find a random painting on the street and bring it home and just hang it on a random nail. It's not so much clutter but more the fact that there is no empty space. I hate spending time in this apartment and it gives me a lot of anxiety. I don't suffer from anxiety and never had this issue in a another space. For this reason I think I gravitate towards Scandinavian or japandi styles. I want clean and calm and well edited spaces

Hi Nick, I have a niche request which I think applies to a lot of people to a lesser degree... I have animals, like a lot of them, and feel like I can't have anything nice because it will get scratched, peed on, knocked over, eaten, absorb odors, etc. I would like an environment that is functional and comfortable, maybe even pleasant. Most of the advice for pet owners is just not half-assed, like "clean up spills right away." I could use some real help! thanks.

Hello 👋 this is all so true, I get in a total mood when my space is not kept because not everyone living in the home is organized 😑 I love natural light, I’m not a fan of soft light I like cold light the brighter the better 😂

Color of light matters more thatn anything to me, yellow light depresses me - I have all "daylight" (as opposed to "softwhite").bulbs - the actual difference is the kelvin color - the new "daylight" bulbs are K5000 (the K number is in tiny print on the package). This is a true white light. You will not see the yellowness of your light until you try K4500 to K5000 bulbs and then you will really see the yellowness of other bulbs.

If you get plants for your house, be careful and make sure you aren't allergic. I got two thinking they would be alright and now have to figure out which one is causing the allergic reaction🤡.
