Art Nouveau and Art Deco originals . . . not "revival". Do you know how inexpensively you can pick up pieces from 1900-1930?? If I had my choice, I'd only go with authentic. Revival pieces look like cheap knock-offs because they are . . .

@@krunkyk2294 I like the spelter pieces from France that were the cheap version of brass but are now very collectible and quite nice if you keep the lead away from small children and gnawing animals. Some pieces may not be from the only era you endorse, or are copies of the original, because most, if not all, are undated and unsigned. Travel posters that are copies of an ad for travel by steamship or a fast train that went out into the public in the 1920s or teens as copies of the ad agency's originals are no different then or today, except for aged paper. Art Nouveau never had the following of Art Deco but the art posters were popular in the 1970s. Major Art Nouveau artists include; Aubrey Vincent Beardsley, Alphonse Mucha, Gustav Klimt, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Louis Comfort Tiffany, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. You'll probably never get the classic pieces of Art Nouveau furniture because they are huge, vastly expensive, and/or in museums. I love the architecture of the Belgium movement by Henry van de Velde and Victor Horta. In the US both styles were reviled in their early years in decorating tomes for their cheap knock offs, soon after they appeared in America around 1900, which is amusing in that you categorize that as the authentic era. :) By the Depression era, Art Deco had infiltrated the decor world so thoroughly that it can be seen everywhere, from alarm clocks to bookcases. That was a revival in a sense, but you might say it was the poor family's attempt to add a bit of classiness and modernity. They were an extension of a streamlined vibe that started at the Paris Exposition for most Americans, and was an even bigger hit 20 and 30 years later for their grown kids. I find it difficult to know exactly what is original/authentic and what is the natural evolution of the style. Your golden era was early decorating books' ugly imitations. Something to think about. :)

My parents splurged on a Wolf range in their new home. My mom lost sleep bc she felt they were being wasteful, but my dad told her, “you’ve waited almost 40 years to have this stove. We’re doing it. No arguments.” Now she loves it and is so glad they have it. She uses it DAILY, multiple times a day, and says she can ABSOLUTELY tell a difference in how it helps her cook and bake. I think she still feels a bit sheepish about the expense, but at least the guilt is gone. She’s sacrificed so much for us throughout the years. She 100% deserves her fancy stove! ❤

Great take on gift-wrap rooms! Reminds me of J.R.R. Tolkien's description of gifts and other acquisitions in The Hobbit: "So, though there was still some store of weapons in the Shire, these were used mostly as trophies, hanging above hearths or on walls, or gathered into the museum at Michel Delving. The Mathom-house it was called; for anything that Hobbits had no immediate use for, but were unwilling to throw away, they called a mathom. Their dwellings were apt to become rather crowded with mathoms, and many of the presents that passed from hand to hand were of that sort."

And I am also with you on the sewing room! One station for ironing, as you say, but another constantly ready for cutting out patterns, along with room for (somehow!) neatly organizing and storing fabric remnants, and a built-in sewing table. And, while we're dreaming, I would like to add a storage room. No stairs (like to an attic), wide doorways for maneuvering large objects, in the house so I don't have to brave the garage in freezing weather, and room to keep my Christmas tree fully assembled year-round! And my personal favorite: a room for card making with an enormous, L-shaped workspace and plenty of natural light, as well as space for the (literally) thousands of tiny objects needed, from ink pads to sequins to embossing folders next to the full-wall of delicious-colored papers from all the best companies! (Such fun to dream....but I do love my own house, as average as it would appear to many!)

No! The wrapping paper room is a classic! It was hilarious when Martin got lost in Niles’ apartment and tried to get help over the intercom and Niles told him, “That’s the wrapping paper room.” We would joke about it for years afterward when we toured houses with old intercoms. It is deeply hilarious that people are actually installing them. I have a ludicrously large fireplace. It came with my ‘60s house. I dislike fireplaces. We put the tv in front of it. When we move the tv to the adjacent wall, I will put a long cushion on the hearth. We tried using it during a 10-day power outage in December once, and it didn’t warm the room at all. Utterly useless.

We live in England in a cottage built in the 1700s, it's grade listed and we rent so are unable to do anything with the space. We have a couple of fireplaces; two we can't use and the functioning one in the living room. Also you don't want a fireplace or a wood burner, they are dirty and make so much dust. I wish I was a rich person and then I could heat my house effectively and dust less. I would never have a fireplace if I could afford central heating and to live somewhere with central heating.

What I gather from watching rich people decor videos is that if you have "Don't have to care" levels of money you don't always think too much about how you spend it. An $8000 purchase is a major decision for most people regardless of what it is, let alone one piece of furniture. But someone with money can buy an $8000 novelty couch shaped like a hotdog for a theme party and then replace it whenever they get tired of it without caring about the cost. It's also kind of a trap because once you reach a certain level of money you're kind of expected to own expensive things even if they don't make sense, like those commercial grade kitchens that rarely get used. That's kinda the thing for me with rich people home tours. Of course they're cleaned and dressed up for television, but they end up looking like museums that nobody actually lives in.

But it’s really nice that we’re both able to shower simultaneously while getting ready for work without sharing the water. I wouldn’t consider it a “must have” but I definitely see the purpose now

This IS a question--IF you were fabulously wealthy and had one ridiculously themed room in your mansion, what would it be? For me, maybe a cheese cellar. Or indoor roller skating rink. Because a sewing room has just been DONE. I also need a water slide somewhere.

Interesting question. I think I would have rooms for different moods. A bright room full of windows when you’re feeling expansive and a dark cave with absolutely no windows when feeling the need to withdraw. A room decorated in soft greens with very quiet patterns but another one pulsing with red, orange, yellow, hot pink wild, clashing patterns. I’m kind of warming to this idea 😂

Star Wars, no question. Maybe make the room into the Milennium Falcon. And have fiber optics built into the windows so you could go to light speed.
In the place I owned before my current home I redid the master bath and replaced a huge garden tub with a large shower with two shower heads and beautiful Italian tile. I know what I fantasized happening in that shower, but, nope, never did. It did help me sell the place quickly, though. Apparently others shared the same or similar fantasies.

It's really wonderful to see you looking content and more like you are getting your mojo back. Seriously. You've helped me distinguish a new color description for my internalized color wheel: hot dog bun brown. lol Lastly, an old friend just sent me a link to, what appears to be, a king-sized Snoopy bed, with giant plushie hindpaw foot board and a massive Snoopy head mounted as the headboard. I'll admit, it looked so comfy and plush, I wanted to crawl right in it and sleep. It was whimsical, but far more luxurious, plush, and inviting than that uncomfortable looking tiktok appropriate hot dog couch w/it's healthy-choice veggie throw pillows. As a former athlete, gymnast, and cheerleader, I spent way too much time training/practicing/performing in gymnasiums growing up, so I'm a big fan of the massive spaciousness of gymnasium-feel living spaces. I've joked, many times, that I'm going to buy an old school and turn the gym into a studio like my old Manhattan apartment, but instead of 12' x 24' x 13' it will be quadruple the size (sans the human-sized cremation fireplace lol).

I live by an area known as the “California Riviera” - Newport Beach, Laguna Beach - and am friends with an architect for that area that has created massive mansions worth more than $50 million! He was actually shown on an episode of “Selling the OC”. He and his partner create crazy rooms for these mega wealthy people - huge theater rooms, jewelry rooms, Louis Vuitton themed massive closets, etc. I know of a person in Newport Beach that had a “Main Street” put into their basement area that held a bowling alley, ice cream shop, jewelry store and more! Crazy levels of ungodly wealth!

And somehow, without all the fancy expensive extras, I still managed to make a mean crab and Argentine red shrimp risotto in it today. I’m skeptical that some of those kitchens you showed are ever actually used. (And by the way, I have a couple of Made In carbon steel pans that I really like. Great for searing things.)

Gift wrapping rooms are an aesthetic way (shiny ribbon, cute paper, festive patterns, color coordination) to waste space. If you don't have a garden, you won't have a flower-cutting room (which I have also seen), so you have a gift-wrapping room instead. I think at that level of wealth your PA mostly handles the gift giving portion of your life so I can't imagine it gets used. Reminds me of the fake limes in Dakota Fanning's kitchen. Just a colorful waste of space and money.

It's also frustrating to see really nice kitchen appliances barely being used when people who do love to cook & need to cook could put those to good use. Hot take (maybe): I hate an exposed shower. Like all glass and out in the open. I want to shower in a cave (lol). At least behind a nice shower curtain. I don't need to see the entire bathroom and my reflection in the mirror. I want to dissociate and listen to music. Even worse hotels with the bathtub in the bedroom (yuck). This isn't a 70s playboy. I just wanna shower and then go to bed in two separate spaces. Like what's with all the windows in the showering/bathing area? In that one photo I just have so much anxiety (what if you fall/slip in the shower and you have the bathtub right there and knock your head on it). OMG my anxiety could never.

Multiple shower heads? No, I'm putting a drive-thru carwash in place of my bathroom so I can just get out of bed in the morning, walk through the bathroom, and come out sparkling clean in the kitchen! Love the food furniture as a joke, but the price tag makes me think someone thinks it's serious. That's horrible. I would totally get a burger chair to put in a guest bedroom just as a "lol burger chair" quirky moment, but I'm not paying more than $200 for it...

Im very artisic and creative and enjoy mcm / FLW design principles and many of the wall shelves I design and build reflect that .All the furniture in my house is mainly all mcm. Some from my mom and grandparents and others I found on my own. Like the mid 1940s, Heywood Wakefield boomerang style legged dropped leaf table complete with the chairs. If I could .. I'd enjoy showing you some pics to get your opinion on how I decorated it and any suggestions on what I should change. This used to be my grandparents' house . My family and friends really like it but I never had a professional opinion on it. Nick, thanks again for what you do and educating us all on interior design. Take care ,Troy

One thought about that particular enormous fireplace… My grandma had a passive solar home with an interior exposed stone chimney, running the height of the house, with a vaulted ceiling. As intended, all of the stone absorbed the heat from her wood burning stove and created a very effective radiant heat. This fella had too much stone surround for that to make too much sense… but maybe it could have utility? Certainly I’ve seen some homes in rural Germany which had these central stone interior chimney designs for the same reason as had my grandma.
