Great video! Shame its such a limited service (and that Northern can't even stop themselves pulling a Northern during the first week of operation!) Brigg does look lovely though.

After the suspension of the passenger service for 54 weeks, with the train operator refusing to put on a replacement bus service, the days of Northern and the community rail partnership on this line are fading away.

What a strange country we live in..... you seem surprised and delighted that a scheduled train actually turns up! Brigg looks the perfect place for peaceful meditation...you aren't going to be disturbed by lots of noisy trains and crowds of passengers for one thing!

I believe they now even have electricity in that part of the country. Maybe the train will benefit of it too in 50 or 100 years.

I’m ashamed to say that, despite living in south Lincolnshire, I’ve never made it to Brigg - my loss, it would seem (I have though been to Gainsborough, and was NOT impressed). Anyway, a delightful video, Mate - what fabulous weather you had, with the chestnut candles and May blossom; England at its most beautiful! 👍🏻

I grew up in North Lincolnshire and visited Brigg fairly regularly, but never knew it even had a railway station until a few years ago. I went to see family last Christmas and visited Brigg on the bus. Went across to see the rail station. This of course was the point at which passenger services were just about to start again. The only train through Brigg that day was freight. I wandered there to see it come through and a guy turned up on a bike to spot the freight service. It was nice and peaceful at the station.

I'm originally from Brigg and edited the community magazine for a number of years. Several times we ran articles about the train service. We pointed out that you could get to Cleethorpes for a day out and Sheffield (or even Meadowhall with a quick change) for shopping. Gave prices for the tickets and mentioned that concessionary fares were available. The kind of basic information that anybody could look up but might not otherwise think of doing so. For a few years there was a bump in passenger numbers and, while I'm sure there were a number of factors, I like to think we got more people using the service. If we compare Brigg to Market Rasen, we can see that Market Rasen could generate up to 70,000 passengers a year despite being somewhat smaller. I think the main fault of the service through Brigg is that it goes to Sheffield. Grimsby and Gainsborough already have a service to Sheffield so any passengers from those towns would have no incentive to use the Brigg line. I believe that the train should instead go south toward Nottingham on the Robin Hood line. That way people from Grimsby and Gainsborough would have a new direct destination, the line would see increased use, and a higher frequency service could be sustained. (Also, the hut outside the station was formerly used to hold Stennett's market. All kinds of live birds were stacked in cages and auctioned there. If the railway had had trains on the same day as the market passengers exiting the station would have needed to step through a fowl auction, which might have been a unique arrival experience.)

My first attempt at the Brigg line was Monday 22nd May but guess what, it was cancelled at Sheffield with about 15 minutes notice. 🙁 I rearranged my plans and managed to ride, from Grimsby back to Sheffield on Tuesday 23rd😀 I'd there were about 20 people on board. I was using a 4 in 8 North East rover. I'm glad I managed to cover this very awkward line. Another awkward line I did while I was up north, Leeds - Goole direct. No chance of getting off at any of the intermediate stations. A great video Nick.

I've only been to Gainsborough Central once on foot (whilst visiting The Northolme to watch the football!). I love that the footbridges on this line are a lovely light blue colour - they stand out compared to the usual dark and drab colours. Mind you, not like they'll get dirty given the infrequency of the service they receive!

It was actually 3 each way on Mondays to Saturdays but had drifted down from 7 or so each way after the 1968 timetable change. The Sunday service followed a slightly different timeline but was similarly reduced until all that remained was a single return trip during the peak summer period.

I suppose this train at least provides a minimum shopping service for the local community with, say, a roughly 2 hour layover in a market/shopping town. Out from Gainsborough (ex. from Sheffield, Worksop and Retford) weekdays at 1043, arriving Brigg at 1107 and Cleethorpes at 1144. Then returning at 1320, Brigg at 1349 and Gainsborough at 1418 (and on to Retford, Worksop and Sheffield). But I'd have thought three trains a day on weekdays is the absolute minimum to provide a chance to get to work/college/shops/seaside/connecting trains elsewhere and back - say at 0800. 1300 and 1700 in both directions each weekday.

Ive been on the train to Brigg before, really lovely place. In my opinion it’s absolutely disgusting what they’re doing to this line’s service. Its a far worse service since the timetable change but with a facade of being a better more frequent service. The fact that people can no longer go on a day trip from Brigg to either Sheffield or Cleethorpes is absolutely awful and was likely the majority of traffic on this line before the timetable change.

The 'Brigg' line just makes me think of 'Brig' in Switzerland. Which is far east along the valley of the river Rhone - but still recieves a pretty much consistently hourly electric train from Geneva Airport through the day. I know because its the train I caught as far as Visp (one stop short of Brig) before changing for a 'Matterhorn-Gothard Bahn' railway service up the mountain to Zermatt last year, when i did a guided climb of the mountain 'Breithorn' (4,164m / 13,661ft)

I loved your film young man, your personality and sense of humour really shone through. Keep it up. What is a Brit England ticket? Speaking of ticket machines, the last time I tried to "buy" a ticket to Okehampton from a ScotRail machine, it told me the station didn't exist. So if a train conductor tries to charge you an enourmous fine for jumping on without a ticket, it might be cheaper to ask for one to Okehampton instead and show the conductor a photo of your failed transaction.

Evidently, for once, the DfT gave Northern short shrift and rightly so as it's not down to the contracted operator to withdraw. True, there can be variations to suit circumstances but the overall specification is from Government and it is incumbent on the potential operator to accept or not tender at all.

It's actually sad to say that, but in France it's pretty common. Before February, I was living in Bressuire, a 20'000 inhabitants city in the mid-west of France, and the entire service was 2 round trips per day. 1 of these starts from and terminates to La Roche-sur-Yon, on the opposite side of Bressuire, serving Cerizay, Pouzauges and Chantonnay. Chantonnay have 6 more trains between it and La Roche-sur-Yon, but Cerizay and Pouzauges only have one train monday to friday in afternoon. And what is the worst part ? The 2 trains intersect, so it is impossible to make a full round trip. As said, the round trip being in the afternoon, impossible to go to work or go to school. Fortunately, on weekends from May to September and every day in July and August, a "beach train" runs in the morning to Les Sables-d'Olonne, a seaside resort on the other side of La Roche-sur -Yon, but only started in Saumur and not Tours. Of course, the round trip La Roche-sur-Yon - Tours is limited to Bressuire - Tours in July and August. There are therefore never more than two trains a day on the track between Bressuire and Chantonnay, which is in a pitiful state. The service of this line is very complicated to understand, and I would really like France to be inspired by the United Kingdom, Switzerland or Germany where the trains are clocked on almost all lines and have good services. . Very good video, keep it up.

After many years of failing, falling levels of service, northern Lincolnshire has done a little better recently. Almost daily through trains between Cleethorpes and Sheffield via Brigg adds to EMR's two hourly through service Grimsby (sadly not Cleethorpes) to Leicester as minor improvement. For real improvement how about..... At least hourly stopping services Healing/Stallingborough/Great Coates both ways, extending 1/2 LKX to Lincoln services to Cleethorpes, and 2/3 services per day Barton to Lincoln/Newark/Sheffield via Brigg?
