I agree. June Anderson has been a great artist that always preferred quality over quantity. She has chosen her suitable repertoire with intelligence...not like many of today's singers that don't care about their fach; they only think about popularity. We're lucky to have her recordings...and enjoy such an amazing singing.

I saw her many times on the stage of the NYC Opera and the Met. But, despite her glorious singing, she was very neglected in New York. Levine didn’t care for bel canto, and Sills preferred other singers for bel canto. So she went to Europe. But the sound of her voice and phrasing - almost no way to describe - she was at a level that very few singers can hope to achieve. I met her once after a perfect Puritani; she was gracious, but very shy.

I met her backstage at the Chicago Lyric after her first Norma and found her to be exactly as you say. I lived in NYC after her City Opera days but attended everything she did at the Met (even grabbed a last minute ticket when she suddenly substituted in Fledermaus). My last time seeing her live was in Nixon in China in Paris - ten years ago! Time flies.

i think it is a complex thing: she essentially expatriated herself to europe in the mid-80's, performed relatively rarely in the u.s. after that, and shied from media hype. also, she held to the bel canto repertoire for the most part and didn't try to sing all the "popular favorites." so there is no june anderson CD with her singing everying from Musetta to Rusalka to Tosca to Pamina to Butterfly. these days, that seems to be the way to become a household name like fleming, netrebko, etc.

Yeah, “legato coloratura” is lovely when it’s done correctly. Otherwise, they should just articulate it a la Bartoli. I would prefer to hear ALL the notes. LOL

Those notes would have been either E flat or F natural because the aria is in B flat. One of those notes was definitely an E flat and I agree: it was clear, unforced, and beautiful!

I was at ROH in that period and I dould follow the reherseals of this edition of Sonnambula. It was simply great, mostly for the support of M° Ventura's, one of the last great conductors of the Italian tradition.
