Nickel Boys is a 2024 American historical drama film based on the 2019 novel The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead. It was directed by RaMell Ross, who co-wrote the screenplay with Joslyn Barnes, and stars Ethan Herisse, Brandon Wilson, Hamish Linklater, Fred Hechinger, Daveed Diggs, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor. The story follows two African American boys, Elwood and Turner, who are sent to an abusive reform school called the Nickel Academy in 1960s Florida.

I hope this film breakthrough at the Oscar’s haven’t seen it but I’m always rooting for my black creatives taking risks, being subservience and tackling taboo topics within our community/culture and I’m definitely ready to see it once comes to NYC. I’m very cautious bc of the academy’s habit of not recognizing black centric films that aren’t period piece, don’t have a white savior and a very heavy handed, patable narrative to race relations and the recent years since moonlight almost proves my worries but I’m praying and hopeful this will be a exceptional moment

This is such a special and groundbreaking film I feel like they will end up honoring it with Picture, Director, Screenplay, Cinematography nominations. Just have to see how much they end up honoring it beyond that!

Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor gives one of the best performances of the year in Nickel Boys. She has such a powerful screen presence that makes every single one of her few scenes vividly memorable & impactful (one near the end that will shatter your heart).Give her all the nominations

just watched it, and it has left the strongest impression of a film for me since Aftersun in the emotional weight i was sitting with as the credits rolled. something about movies where the style and craft are so deeply connected to the emotions evoked is so special to me.
