Its about people who sell their soul to fit in and the problems that causes. The rainwater around Chris's back when he's on the ground resounds the old man's wings. The old contrasted with the young as well as the bird who takes off while the old man sits there implies that people are gifted with flight but choose to stay on the ground in order to "do as the Romans do," meaning they choose not to succeed. They stomp in the same water much as the song ironically energizes the helplessness of man.

I understand exactly what the song is about. And I understand all the meaning and metaphors in the video. That doesn't mean they work or are good. It would be a great film project for somebody in school. Or great for a local band.

Great song. A lot of the video ideas just do not work. The stomping looks ridiculous. The slow-motion of Sarah is a fail attempt at looking badass. Even Thile looks silly through a lot of this video. I blame the director. Good ideas with bad followthrough. At least the tune is amazing.
