You're right about the Cloverleaf being very important back then. A lot of freight consisting of auto parts moved from Toledo, Ohio on that line.

I saw that after it happened. It was a weird sight to be sure. Looks like somebody busted Adela bag full of Econoline Vans all over the place. And those were definitely Ford Econoline.

Vans are early Ford Econoline vans, 1969 to 73, so was the crew cab truck.

I grew up in Cayuga. I remember the railroad (NS) removing these tracks in 1988 when I was ten years old. The train that removed the tracks was a slow-moving east bound train. I also remember there being only one train a week on this line and it was on Saturday's, so that confirms your story of how little the line was used at the end. Us kids would hide in the woods and throw rocks at the train as it slowly went by. It really hurt Cayuga when NS removed the tracks. NS let the property go to hell and they gave zero effort to clean it up.

Interesting compilation but disagree about saving the vehicles. The liability of selling a vehicle that was in a derailment is far greater than the cars value. Standard procedure for decades now is if the freight car hits the dirt, the vehicle gets crushed. Unless someone has documentation with a VIN number I imagine that’s what happened with all of these, and that’s why the dealer didn’t buy them. Dealer probably lied about it to the locals after the fact. 😂

Cates is my dad's home town him and his brothers and sisters grew up there I got down and visit every other weekend or so. factory was on the south side where the track crosses the road on the left side when your looking north. The grad school was the second intersection from the main intersection going west turn left and the building on the corner is the old gym for the school the school sat south of it.
