Even knowing how much there was going to be in the pre-Nicktoons era of Nick, it's amazing just *how much* history there really is. This series has been one of the most satisfying things I've ever watched, and I often go back to rewatch because it just hits that sweet nostalgia spot.

Kind of bittersweet, leaving the 80's (and 1979), behind. Spent a lot of time, seeing the channel grow from a loss leader to the highest rated cable channel. I agree with you, I think nick knacks has expanded the discourse on 80's nicklelodeon. Thank you so much for this series. I love it. Looking foward to the 90's.

Congratulations for making it through 80's Nick, Greg. As someone not much older than Nickelodeon, I feel you did justice to the Silver Ball and early Orange Splat-eras, especially given how hard some of that material was to find. I definitely had warm fuzzy nostalgia watching many of these episodes, and I appreciate the work you put into them. Even during this episode, I found myself grinning ear to ear during most of the shorts and the contests. May the 90's Nick-era be just as good, if not better!

I definitely remember 80s Nick fondly, and I really appreciated this series covering material before my time. 90s Nick is a very special part of my teenage years, but there was nothing and never will be anything like 80s Nick, and I’m thankful for being a part of it and for you letting me remember it.

Being older than you (and essentially a cable kid - we got it in 1982 and when my parents saw the channel, I got to watch it whenever) I really appreciated the early to mid 80s Nick focus...it sounds like hyperbole to say but if you were a kid at that time, just having something like Nickelodeon was night and day. When you only had Saturday morning (and the occasional weekday afternoon) shows, it was totally awesome. Even the shows that weren't that great...we didn't care much because it was "for us." Thanks again for the multiple trips down memory lane!

I would be very interested to see any number of episodes about the various contests featured here. Like just how did "Nick Invades Your School" play out for students of that school? Was it a lame assembly and other parts being filmed but not participated in by most of the student body, how many personalities actually came, were there permission slips, etc.? Also, all this time I've misremembered the Super Toy Run as being the final stage of a game show, but I do recall thinking the obvious choice was to get to the videogame section and pile in as many as possible. The cost per volume ratio is unmatched for the 90s, so I've wondered if there was something those in charge did to make it untenable, or did they just trust kids to be overstimulated and not think straight? Finally, I recall really enjoying Picture Pages (whether on Captain Kangaroo, Pinwheel or in Nick commercials, who can say), but looking back it was for the proto-ASMR experience similar to Bob Ross' Joy of Painting or Mark Kistler's Secret City of following the marker with its beep-beep-boop-beep-beep-beep-boop as opposed to any educational lessons.

If it helps, there's a podcast called Splat Attack that's all about classic Nickelodeon, and there's an episode where they talk to a woman who won Nick Takes Over Your School as a kid; she tells them everything about how it went down. She met celebrities, she participated in skits, she got slimed, the whole deal. Fascinating stuff 👍

Wasn’t expecting an extra video for odds and ends from the 80s, this was a nice wrap-up! Like you, I also was a 90s kid but I also was interested in the 80s era of Nickelodeon, just from my vague memories of the various game shows and other programming and back in the day the only place for that was the ‘Nick Nostalgia Site’ which is where I found out about the Sy Schneider era and it just felt like a part of the network I knew nothing about. These videos have been a great deep dive into shows I mostly never watched or ever had a chance to see and some that I never knew Nick even aired! With that, I really appreciate the time and work you’ve put into this so far. Looking forward to the 90s videos!

As someone born in 1981 I feel like I straddle the line between '80s and '90s Nickelodeon. Love these videos and the information and commentary. So many memories started to come back as you neared the end of the 1980s. I have many fond memories of You Can't Do That on Television, Danger Mouse, Duckula, Double Dare, Hey Dude and several others. My main years of Nickelodeon were probably 1987 - 1995 though in the early '90s I spent a lot of time with USA, TNT, and TBS. Thanks so much for these ten years and I look forward to more!

I really have to applaud you for all the work you've put into Nick Knacks. The first ten years of Nickelodeon was a period of the channel that was in dire need of being preserved from a historical perspective. There's so much more to Nickelodeon than airing countless episodes of SpongeBob that deserves to be remembered. This has been a absolute treasure trove of nostalgia.

I may be a 90s baby, but I have something of a curiosity and fondness of 80s Nick. They had everything for kids. Some are fun, some are weird, some are wholesome, some need to be remembered more, and some are left best forgotten. That was 80s Nick. Variety. Now the 90s had that as well, but with a pinch of iconography, and baked in the kitchen of the Nick Studio.

One thing I would love to have a comprehensive list of is the short one-off films Nick had between shows, especially in its pre-commercial era. Two I remember appearing regularly were Robert Swarthe's Academy Award nominated "Kick Me" and "Sundae In New York", which won the 1983 Academy Award for best short film. These shorts were a little too weird for "Pinwheel" but for us older kids they were fun breaks during "You Can't" and "The Tomorrow People". Unfortunately I doubt anyone was keeping a list of these shorts at the time, and any record now is on an old Betamax tape in a basement somewhere.

As a child of the 80’s, those top of the hour bumpers hold a special nostalgia place (the roller coaster more than the disco dog from the later 80’s). I think part of the thing to remember about the early years of Nickelodeon is just how much smaller the market for cable television was just in general. The viewing numbers from 1980-83 are going to be astronomically smaller than 87-89 but that’s because so few had cable television at this point. It probably would not have continued as originally structured without another You can’t do that on television sized hit, but the market was a few 10’s of thousands vs. the millions by 1990. Your granular research heavy approach unearthed some truly interesting chunks of history that I otherwise would have never sought out myself; The history of Canadian public broadcasting, the difficult but intensely interesting life of Patty Duke, everything involving Qube, T̴̘̿h̶̩͎͂e̸̲̊̿ ̵̲̘͛͆Ĉ̷̙ḻ̸̨̉́ö̶͔͎́̑c̴̘̲̓̈k̷̲̑ ̶̯̍M̶̪̈͌ä̵͙̲́̈́n̶̙̭̏ ̵̗͝ While I am excited to see you get to more shows I know of -- I agree with you in how satisfying it has been to see all of the facets of an era I had little knowledge of. That being said, your dedication for accuracy over narrative has me excited to see a more nuanced and specific look through of the "Golden Age." With all of the stuff you found in a less documented age for the channel who knows what you will uncover with much more information at your disposal. Thank you for keeping this series up! The most interesting part of this episode was Phil Tonkin. He was a voiceover for the early Nickelodeon promos and also a voiceover for WOR-TV (channel 9) in NYC back in the 1970’s and 1980’s.

I've been steadily bingeing this series and have nearly caught up. As someone who was more of a cartoon network kid growing up and wasn't aware of Nickelodeon's history before the late 80's, I can say I definitely appreciated learning a fuller history of the channel and its programming. I'm sure this yt channel will start to blow up once you finally reach the nick toons, but I'm happy I discovered this channel before that happened. Keep up the great work!

I'm sure I've mentioned that I have vague memories going as far back as 'silver ball' nick, (was born in 1979) so I've been there since pretty early on! and I'm glad I wasn't the only one wondering who was announcing during that mid 80s era I fondly remember, so nice to finally get some closure on that!! sad to hear that he passed a couple years back but damn if wendel craig and his legacy won't be remembered. also great to see the 'shorts' get some love, I was looking them up after whichever episode they were referenced on as I was working through the backlog, then I came across sports cartoon again! I think my all time favorite was the one where they're playing darts, haha. I do remember picturepages, as well. I think my favorite that didn't come up was DOG BRAIN, reminded me of a dog my mom had up until only about a year or so ago he was such a big dummy, haha. man, nick or treat and super toy run! yeah catch me in the videogame section, of course. always a good day when a new episode of nick knacks lands in my subscription feed!

Except for the Devil short (I kind of remember…) I for sure remember the Sports Cartoons, Picture Pages, Inside Out Boy (thank you btw, haven’t thought of him in awhile), and of course Pete & Pete! And yes, all those amazing contests, how badly I wanted to be entered into Super Toy Run & Nick or Treat. I remember getting multiple free gummy bears at McDonald’s by saying “Nick Sent Me” lol. Very interesting about Australia having a “Nick Takes Over School” show, I’d have watched that! I remember hearing about Hulk Hogan being at one of the takeovers, I’d love to see that and some of the other ones. Great stuff, on to the 90s!

I was born in 1988, and didn't start watching Nickelodeon until maybe 1992, so the first decade of Nickelodeon on Nick Knacks was such an education for me. I was aware of Pinwheel and some of the older shows, and as you progressed through the years more and more names of shows I remembered came back to me (David the Gnome, Adventures of Little Koala, Hey Dude, Eureeka's Castle, Fred Penner's Place, The Elephant Show). I've enjoyed sticking with you through all the shows and all the twists and turns! I've actually started re-watching all the old episodes in preparation for '90s Nick and I can't wait to see what else I'm going to learn!

Nickelodeon didn’t launch here in the UK until 1993 but Inside-Out Boy did air on our version of the channel as filler programming between shows even in 1996! It’s always nice to see children’s programming from a decade or two ago pop up on a channel now that you wouldn’t expect to be currently rerunning! That same year, 1996, Fox Kids launched over here and their lineup included Transformers Gen 1!

Man, I need to catch up on your series. I caught your Nick Knacks series when you were still covering the obscure start of the channel's history in 1979 (to be honest I find the channel's first few years to be more interesting than the overhype nostalgia that is the 90s) and always watched a new video of yours whenever I got notified. Idk why I stopped doing so to be honest, but I would like to see what you made since I did, can't wait to see you covering the 90s as well, wish you luck. P.S. Speaking personally about myself, I was born in 1999 so I'm more nostalgic towards 2000s nick than 90s nick (and lord knows it will be a few more years til you get to the 2000s). Nevertheless I did see and grew up on some 90s nicktoons, so you can say I have second wave 90s nostalgia for certain shows that aired at that time.

Mathew 19:12 🏳️‍🌈 Eunuchs that are born that way are transgender. 🏳️‍🌈 Eunuchs made that way by others were abused in some way and something inside of them blocks off a certain type of body but it doesn't happen to everyone that is abused. 🏳️‍🌈 Those that choose to live like Eunuchs FOR THE SAKE OF THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN are bisexual people that choose partners of the same sex-characteristics but opposite in regards to gender. Notice, it states God PREFERS for people to be in LGBT relationships. Jesus, David, and Joseph were all transgender and Jesus is returning as a woman. God created them male and female, determined by gender, located in the brain. I am Elijah of Malachi 4:5-6. In Deuteronomy, it states nobody was castrated back then. But, that is what God wanted people to think so they wouldnt take it out of the Bible. As Elijah, any discrepancies in the Bible are ultimately decided by me. I can't prove I am Elijah, but people keep telling me I'm about to be announced to the world. My destiny is to usher in the Messiah! Anyone that teaches same-sex marriage is a sin will die with the wicked by their own choice. Anyone selling anything using the gospel or teaching the LIE of monetary tithing will also die with the wicked. Sodom and Gem. was about rape and greed, nothing to do with marriage of any kind. Romans is not referring to Eunuchs where one partner is transgender. Lev., Corinthians, and Timothy are referring to pedophilia. Billy Graham the wolf translated the Bible wrong.... ANYONE TEACHING THE MONETARY TITHING LIE OR COLLECTING MONEY FOR MINISTERING WILL BE ARRESTED FOR FRAUD. Delete my comments and you reject Jesus herself, and you are already aware what that means . . .

Even though I was never born in the 80’s or 90’s Stuff like this gives me pump of nostalgia, in the earlier years Nickelodeon really went all out for kids especially for tweens and preteens who actually watch everything that they had to give. I still couldn’t believe that Nick actually took over the school in my of state of NC and I wasn’t even born.

One thing I read about the super toy run that's a bit less cynical is that they really took pains to give the kids who won a great time. They actually let them browse ahead of time & pick out what they wanted before they got the fun of going nuts for the cameras. They really wanted to make sure nobody went home disappointed. Of course, that would have been awful marketing if kids went back to school on Monday to tell everybody about an army of suits behind the scenes being stingy about rules, restrictions, & fine print-- so thats also a win for Nick. But still, it made me happy to read about.

If memory serves, because so much of my early Nickelodeon experiences were rare glimpses when visiting my grandparents because we didn't have it yet, the opening you used would sometimes include voiceover of the schedule, kind of like the old days when networks would do voiceover ads for other shows on the channel before telling you what show (or your local news) was up next. This was eventually dropped from the between show segments.

While we're on the subject of Nick's announcers, here's a few honorable mentions/info you forgot to mention (or you haven't reached their era yet) First, a note on Phil Tonken; not only was he the first, but as an NYC resident, he'll always be best known as the announcer for WOR-TV 9 (No real reason to mention that, just want to show some love for vintage NYC TV) 30:16 - It took me a second to figure it out, but the VO on the "Nick or Treat" Promo sounds Very Much like longtime NYC Radio/TV Personality Jerry Carroll, who you might know best as the guy who did commercials for "Crazy Eddie" Electronic stores (HIS PRICES ARE INSANE!). If it's Not him it's an incredible simulation. And finally, I know I've heard his voice (at least) in promos for the Nick Home Video Line and also a few "We'll be right Back" bumpers, but I believe industry vet Bill St. James (as heard in the "Toy run" Promo @ 32:17) was Wendell Craig's backup announcer around the late 80s to mid 90s. Again, I MIGHT have the timeline screwed up, but I know he joined Nick at/around the time he stopped doing VO's for Cinemax around 1989 or so. Other than that, the ENTIRE Nick Knacks series is Required viewing for TV Fans/historians alike.

My first nick memories where of count duckula ive been with there ever since. I loved this early era. By the 90s they knew what worked for kids. But most of the 80s was expermenting. They drew on thier own childhood for ideas: exploring the wild, interest in old fairy tale classics, magic tricks. And the bouncing ball logo represnted a pin ball, as no doubt they bumped pin ball machines alot as a kid. But this was all outdated by 80s kids standards. One worked the best and was number 1 because it let kids be kids: You cant do that on television. It was wild and zany and just what they needed. The future shows and crazy bumpers showed this new look.

Greg, it was great that you finally found a place where you can talk about Picture Pages with Bill Cosby. I remember watching Captain Kangaroo as a kid on PBS as well as the stand-alone segments on Nick. Just like I’m looking forward to a Nick Knacks presentation on Maisy once we get to 1999, I can’t wait to watch a retrospective look at Cosby’s show that aired on Nick, Little Bill. I also await to see looks at two other book-based shows that first aired on Nick that year, Franklin and Kipper. As for Nickelodeon’s Toy Run Sweepstakes, you are right. It would have been cool if it became a full-blown kids game show like Supermarket Sweep or Shop ‘Til You Drop: Toystore Edition or something. R.I.P. Toys ‘R’ Us and Jeffery Giraffe. I even remember shopping at Babies ‘R’ Us for things to give my goddaughter when she was younger shortly before that store went bye-bye. Here’s to looking forward to Nickelodeon’s golden age of shows! By the way, Greg, I too have grown up with Nick in the ‘90s just like you did.

First of all, thank you so much for this series. Highly entertaining and enlightening. I think I've watched the YCDTTV episode 4 or 5 times. And Nick Hotel. And Clarissa. And Hey Dude. Hell, pretty much everything except Goosebumps. As a kid I went straight from Bunnicula to Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (and Nightmares: Poems to Trouble to your Sleep) to Stephen King. Never got into the YA horror books or watched the tv versions. If you do Choose-Your-Own-adventure, I'm in. After you hit Salute Your Shorts and the Nicktoons, that'll be the end of my personal connection to Nickelodeon. I think I only ever checked back in for the odd cartoon. I'll keep watching though, because I didn't know much of the early early days of NICK and I found that very interesting. My first memories are of Pinwheel. Also loved your series on Legend of the Galactic Heroes, but I can see why you've let that drop off. It was probably an incredible labor of love, time and energy for very little viewership... and a huge future time investment if you go episode by episode.

I'm very surprised to hear they lasted as long as they did, especially the Toy Run since I stopped seeing ads for it in the early 2000's but to hear it lasted until 2018 is mind-boggling, especially considering Toys R Us in the last decade of operations was slowly losing it's relevance to Wal Mart, Target and online retailers. That's quite some loyalty from Nickelodeon if true.
