My wife and I have passed through this town on numerous occasions. We turn off Hwy 74 at the Laurinburg intersection and when we reach Bennetsville we turn north (we live in N.C. close to the N.C. and S.C. border). It is a very beautiful town and we'll usually have our lunch there. The citizens are very very friendly and hospitable. We have talked seriously about selling our home and property in N.C. and moving here permanently. It reminds me of the small N.C. where I grew up that went from a population of about 1,700 to millions of northerners that flooded the area beginning in the early '80's. I'm 67 years old; I spent 32 years in the military and by the time I retired in '09 the culture had changed completely. I had become a stranger. God bless this town and its people.

19:48 Municipal police departments are in my opinion unconstitutional. They are the very notion of 'standing army'. The county sheriff is an elected official. He has the power to assemble a posse. Otherwise known as a militia. The sheriff is the only person authorized to deputize law enforcement. Municipal forces are answerable to no one except the city council or manager that hired them. You can force the chief out. But the organization remains. They are a private army. Sounds like the sheriff needs to hire more deputies.

This kind of stuff happens all the time with small towns that are dying. They simply need to unincorporate, and become a census designated area instead of a town. That way, the county can take over all of the services that the town used to provide. The residents will now pay a county tax instead of a town tax. Their taxes may go up slightly, but it is the only way for these people to receive the services they need.
@NickJohnson18 күн бұрын
What about the town drunk? Does he unincorporate too?

Anybody with any since doesnt rely on law enforcement to keep you safe. They're not 1st responders. Theyre like 8th or 9th. You yourself is the 1st responder or your better half.

That's an interesting perspective! The idea of exercising your constitutional rights to protect yourself while living in areas with little to no crime highlights how different communities approach safety. It’s true that in some areas, the absence of police doesn’t necessarily equate to higher crime, and local values and community engagement can play a huge role in maintaining order. It’s all about finding the right balance that works for each unique community.

think I've drove through there on my way to Myrtle Beach once or twice in my 10 trips there, back in the day. One time my Water Pump went out on the trip on my Monte Carlo 98' and had to get it changed at a Local Garage somewhere down through there... we had been just adding water over and over to not blow up the car.

Perhaps my final comment: I suspect the police in this town were corrupt and they were given the choice by the state DA to either resign or face prosecution. I know of a number of small towns in both S.C. and N.C. where the police were part of the problem and not the solution.
@DumHeather18 күн бұрын
Every government institution is corrupt. Every single last one and has been for a good long time. At least since the early 60s or else our country would not have gone through the drastic devastation and purely negative change that it’s gone through since then.

Wow! That Small Town in South Carolina falling apart with little to no police! I will not be surprised AT ALL if it becomes like that in Oregon before too long where I live. You on the other hand Nick are VERY LUCKY You NEVER EVER HAD TO LIVE IN A DUMP OF A STATE Like Oregon like I have all my life. I have a certain friend who was not born in Oregon where I live but did live there for a while. And he is lucky he was not born there or living there anymore. I wish I could say the same. You are a great soul Nick! There is not too many of them in Oregon except those that respect me. I only hope to see things improve!

I live in Laurens County and for what they do here they may as well resign. You can call em and they eventually show up but unless you know who did what and have it on camera with 3 witnesses then they take a report and waste your time and theirs evidently. Speeders fly up and down the roads where I live and the deputy sit under a tree and smoke a cigarette. Then they want a raise!

All of my grandparents are from here. I had 14 aunts and uncles and 26 cousins who grew up loving McColl. Every storefront and many of the homes and churches showed are vivid in my heart. Agriculture and textile based social structures were destroyed by WWII dispersion and global economies that ended the small towns in the south. Worldwide, tight nit village communities become rare as cultural diversity and extended families disappear, never to return until transportation and communication collapses.
