Them fuckin deer been giving me a sour attitude these days. I don't reckon I'm gonna take much more of it before I give them a piece of my mind I tell you what. A feller can only take so much attitude from those prancin sons a bitches fore it's time to set the tables straight. Now you LISTEN HERE deer, I'll tell em, I don't like YOU and YOU DON'T LIKE ME! But you WILL respect the FUCKING curfew on this here main street like everyone else, or we're gonna have a WHOLE DIFFERENT conversation. That usually sets em straight, for a few hours. And mind you, in deer time, a few hours is really only a couple minutes. So I basically spend my whole day talking to these disrespectful sons a bitches, trying to just get some basic expectations, up ere in Montanny.

I think it’s got a much more Midwest vibe than I had anticipated. Moved here in 2011 to get out of Illinois. What noticed back in 2011 was that the men seemed very tired all the time. And people make everything a laughing matter - which is good most of the time ! They don’t like it that I grew up in Calif - I was told that I was one of” them” - so I basically stick to myself . It’s definitely overly portrayed as a healthy place but the food has to be trucked in and is soooo expensive - hard to eat if one has any allergies - most folks have their group of friends already . It’s not recommended for older singles ! 😂😂

Another epic report from Nick, the man well travelled. I was lucky to have visited Montana back in 2000, as a Brit, brought up in rural Devon, Montana was like a saviour (after spending three months living and working in LA) I took a road trip to Missoula, and just WOW, I’ll forever remember the landscapes I witnessed. I remember hiking a snowy trail to Garnet, a ghost town out of season…. I was the only one there. If I ever come back to the States, I’d very much love to see the rest of what this beautiful state offers. Great work sir.

Montana is the greatest. I live in very rural Utah in a mountain cabin; in my life before I lived in the cities (and worldwide in the military); until you have lived in the woods you won't appreciate what it is like, but once you have done so, you will never want to go back. Rural folk (like the entire state of Montana) cringe like I do when they visit a monstrocity like Salt Lake City. We count the seconds until we are out of there.

It's really not that bad. Most days the highs are near freezing, with just a few day span once or twice a season where it drops far into the negatives. I'm only guessing but I'd say 70% of days between November and March the high is in the 30's or higher. I guess it depends where you are though, the eastern flat half of the state probably averages quite a bit colder. I live just outside Glacier NP, and can only really testify to my area and the Flathead Valley.

Another good job, Nick. You've brought to light another attractive relocation spot for my list, very appealing. Montanans appear to be people after my own heart because, as it applies to where I want to live and never leave, that place has to be a place where the excitement is sporadic and the peace CONSTANT. ... .

В штате Монтана, я думаю, хотя сам там ни разу не был, атмосфера рабочик рук, труженников, атмосфера ковбойских ферм и традиций. Это ценно, и хотелось бы это сохранить, а возможно и приумножить. I have not shopped nor do I purchase from big retail chains for everything except my groceries, but everything else, even my razor blade refills, I shop on Mercari, Poshmark, ebay and depop. I pay more, but it's because I choose to buy discontinued yarn, and it's a bit costly, but I'd rather help a family or single parent, students, etc. Who really need the money to survive! That's what I have been doing for about 7 years now, I think. Support small mom pop businesses it's their lively hood. I love visiting Montana whenever I'm out seeing family in Alberta, as they are close to the border so I usually make a point of traveling through the State on my way back. I've stayed in Kalispell, Polson, Great Falls, and Libby. The last town, if you've ever visited, is a really nice, friendly place that was once considered one of the most polluted communities in the United States. The major employer in town, going back to the late 19th century, was a vermiculite mine that evidently ran alongside natural asbestos deposits, and in the mining process there was contamination on a massive scale that saw not only the employees exposed to asbestos but pretty much everyone else courtesy of the wind carrying fibers everywhere. The EPA began investigating in 1999, began emergency responses in 2000 and ultimately declared a public health emergency in 2009. Cleanup of more than one million cubic yards of contaminated soil was completed in late 2018, with the exception of the forested area. I walked past the EPA office in Libby during my stay, and saw signs for a mesothelioma clinic. What's particularly insidious is that the company that took over operations of the mine back in 1963 - W.R. Grace & Company - knew of the asbestos contamination and didn't warn anyone until the end of mining operations in 1990. It just let the area get contaminated and let its citizens get sick; the profits meant more.

That may be true on these back roads, but on the highway, after driving across the country several times, I've had the opposite experience, oddly enough. Montanans drive exactly the speed limit, or even a few miles under, more often than people do in any other state I've been to.

We were just in far eastern Montana for a little bit on a ‘Grand Tour of North Dakota’ vacation. Saw like 5 people. Nothing like driving along a 2-lane asphalt highway that turns to gravel at 70 mph with no warning. Drove on the gravel part for about 30 miles (going 50 mph) before it mercifully turned back to asphalt.
