You could walk with your girl friend for miles it seemed and not see any one else. I enjoyed it. The country was a lot nicer than it is today.

The only place I went to that had bums was downtown Phoenix, the rest of the state was perfect. I went to Phoenix, Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, all of Route 66, The Grand Canyon, Sedona, Jerome, Tucson, Saguaro NP, Bisbee, Tombstone, and Sierra Vista. Saguaro NP was the highlight of the trip as well as Seligman on Route 66!

My best friend and I, worked at different banks, and in 1988 there was a February holiday...in Monday. We both called in the previous Friday - and took a spur of the moment "road trip", I packed a giant ice chest , and we went to Pasre ! The most memorable things about the trip; my car a 1985 Chevy Cavalier.... the left headlight kept going out - kept unplugging itself, and we got stopped MANY times by State troopers and Highway patrol. The BEST thing, my friend had packed EVERYTHING - even an electric skillet, and after getting to Padre, the next morning - she was cooking breakfast on the balcony of the cheap motel ! Also, when driving back North toward home ---- the last day - I got off to get gas, she went to sleep - and I drove over 1 hour the WRONG way ! When she awoke, we weren't much closer to home ---- I didn't tell her until years later !

Tx beaches arent so bad, the water color just varies day to day and from one time of yr to another. This day for example is actually a pretty bad day for South Padre. Usually from May through Oct its much prettier. North winds push browner brackish waters out of rivers and bays out into the gulf. South or easterly winds bring in blue clear warmer waters. Its just abt that simple. The waters are all pushed out and choppy in this video with a strong north wind. I can tell just by seeing it and being very familiar with the coast.

Correction, Spring break started in the early 70s. The hippies started Spring break but it wasn't called spring break back then. Back in the 70s there were free rock concerts and lots of drugs that most white hippies used. Yes I said it, white hippies they brought the drugs from Mexico. Back in the 70s anyone could drive over to Mexico and bring alcohol and all kinds of drugs back to Texas. And that's why the white hippies came in large numbers. White people love drugs and Mexicans made money because of the white hippies. Now in present times drugs are still a big sell as well as alcohol. Those old people in your video are the last of the drug users infestation we had back in 70s. Yes Grandma and Grandpa did a lot of drugs back in their days. Come back in the summer and see the difference in the amount of people and the weather has a tropical feel to it.

In my teen/young adult years (1967-1977) we made many trips to S.Padre from the N. Dallas area. Back then the 'strip' was only 1/4 or less developed. Only ate at a fancy sea food restaurant there one time in all those years, and never stayed in a motel. We got ice, beer, and bait on arrival, then spent all our time camping out north island where there were almost no people.

Nick the island has 3 tourist seasons. Spring break in March and April. Winter Texans in January and February, but also the rich Mexicans come from Monterey and Mexico city in July and August to escape the heat of the Mexican desert. They also own a lot of. The condos and Real estate on the much of the island to the surprise of many. Brownsville and Laguna Heights provide a lot of the maids, waiters, etc, that take care of the tourists needs. Sometimes it takes several hours to cross the only bridge to the island when concerts or other activities, Next time pay the ten dollars to enter Isla Blanca park at the south end and enjoy. You did a great job capturing sunrise on gulf.

4:40 The island was never part of the Republic of Texas. The southern border was the origin of the US Mexican war in 1845 since Mexico claimed the Nueces river vs. the US claiming the Rio Grande. It was settled at the end of the war with the Guadalupe-Hidalgo treaty. BTW, the footage of Rd 100 in the 9:45 timemark seems to show the tract that is still under dispute with the state, due to the interpretation of that treaty and the land ownership rights of some descendants of the first Spaniards that settled in the area. 6:30 The island is at the same latitude as Palm Beach, FL and its Köppen climate zoning is humid subtropical like in Orlando, FL. 9:20 Drug smuggling may (or may not) take place along the beaches. However, it was documented the cotton smuggling during the Civil war since all the other ports of the confederacy were blocked by the union’s navy. They were labeled as “product of Mexico” and some people made fortunes with that (ask JPMorgan folks in NYC). 9:50 Texas allows any person the freedom of transit along the shore, but no right to erect any structure between the “green line” and the water even if it is your own property (I’d wish California learned from it). 24:20 Totally agree that property values went through the roof. A few years ago, I was considering retiring there (for other reasons I changed my mind). Nowadays, many fellows that work in the island actually live in nearby inland towns (Port Isabel, mainly). I liked the video; I think it captured how underrated it is outside TX. One thing that wasn’t mentioned, which is applicable to all the Gulf Coast is the incidence of hurricanes. It is a matter of time to go through one (I did 4 times). Say that insurance premiums are not as high as FL’s, but they will impact anyone on a fixed income.

Went there about a couple of years ago. Landed in Brownsville Airport and took the free shuttle into South Padre.(limted hours of service btw) South Padre in short, is Texas's version of Miami or Tampa. During the low season, it's very hot or windy. You won't meet anyone except "empty nesters" and no one under 50 who'll brag about their grandchildren while doing jello shots. Stay away from the food trucks. *Cheers*
