The Texas coast has a bad reputation. I can see why.
I explored Corpus Christi, Texas for a couple of days. I think half this city is rundown and very dangerous.

Great memories of Corpus Christi that’s where I started my 30 year airline career as a ramp agent with SWA I was there when the USS Lexington sailed in that day for its final home I was there when Selena was shot and killed I learned to fly there got my private pilot license in 1994 oh yeah and that’s where I met an 18 year old girl named Lynda Sue when I was 24 years old she is now 62 I’ll be 68 in March and we’re still together.

I took my kids (who weren’t even in school yet) to see the Lexington sail into Ingleside Home port. They are now in their 30’s. I’m still surprised that Corpus actually made it work. We don’t want to remember what happen to the Columbus ships 🤦🏼‍♀️. Lived there all my life until 3 years ago and moved up to San Antonio. Once you leave you realize how bad it really was

13:38 correct Nick but more specifically, it’s Mississippi River water. The current in the gulf flows counterclockwise so you’ll notice Galveston is the brownest waters. Corpus (summer) and padre most of the year are more blue. It’s not dirty, just silt carried from as far as Canada

That makes sense why the waters in the Florida Panhandle are some of the most dazzling turquoise and clear in the country. I always wondered why those beaches were so nice, but other Gulf beaches generally suck..

All the Mississipi water with its pesticides, that combines with the Gulf chemicals produce a gigantic dead zone in the ocean. Not mentioned in the video, some families on the coastal bend used to make a living shrimping and catching oysters a few decades ago. Not anymore...

Was gonna say, I go to mustang Island every summer and the water is pretty blue. I grew up near south Padre and the beach accesses have pretty blue/clear water 20 miles out, but most of the year, the bay looks solid green

Nick, the fact that it is the Gulf Coast currents is correct. You should have been there after Katrina....Plus you didn't let the viewers know where you were in Corpus. Padre Island with their canal houses. Flour Bluff (interesting name) for folks who cannot afford the Island. Also home to HEB along with Whataburger...

Corpus has always struggled. But so have all the communities along the Gulf here in Texas, like Galveston as well as other smaller places along the coast. It's the hurricanes that keep them from reaching their full potential. I grew up near Galveston and left as soon as I finished college. Got tired of the hurricanes and tropical storms. Moved further inland in Texas. I go to Corpus a lot. It really does have a lot of potential. And it's not actually on the Gulf of Mexico like Galveston. It's actually on Corpus Christi Bay. The real ocean and beach along the Gulf of Mexico is about 10 miles further out to the east on the barrier islands of Padre Island and Mustang Island. Those beaches are much, much nicer. And yeah, just about everyone in Texas loves Buc-ee's!

@SaveTheSunBear
@SaveTheSunBear Ай бұрын
@@amberdonnelly3410not too often. Last hurricane we had was Harvey in 2017. Hurricanes are not a major struggle. They’re barely even a struggle. We don’t get hurricanes in the gulf because the water is too warm and it pushes the hurricanes away or something? Idk. Science. We do have quite a few tropical storms during the hurricane season, but we don’t have actual hurricanes

I told my partner, who was born in Corpus, & he said "no f***ing way with all that pollution in the air, land, & water..." He said they don't just do water boil orders, that sometimes they just ban residents from using any water period, even if it's boiled & tell em nobody can take a bath, just a quick shower at their own discretion, & to preferably use bottled water & a bucket. & he said everybody who lives their has to have cancer... that there's no way that they don't... especially if they've been exposed to all the chemical smog & contaminated water for decades... 👀

Corpus is where you wanna go if you want to live a quieter life with little in the way of big city life and/or entertainment. If you're coming here from Seattle, you may be disappointed. If you like more peace and/or quiet, it's pretty damn good. If you work in a refinery or an industrial capacity, it's a very reasonable place to live. Just outside of Corpus you can buy your own ranch. Don't care much for downtown, waste of money imho. Taxes are ridiculous too.

Anywhere you stay I would recommend driving to nearby Port A for the ocean, it's like 30min away, the bay is not as good. Meet a few good friends but most of all I found myself regained my confidence and found out why it's the body of christ. We had a wonderful family beach weekend on North Padre Island BEFORE the last big Hurricane. Maybe about 15 years ago? We stayed at a beachfront Holiday Inn Spree or something like that it was named. It wasn't luxury but it wasn't crowded, we found sand dollars, there was a sandy beach or you could swim in the pool where there was also a live band. We ate at a good seafood restaurant nearby. Then the Hurricane came and trashed the hotel. I've been watching to see if it's been restored but it's been slow.

My Dad built a lot of these refineries some time in the early-mid previous century. My uncle tried to get into the US Navy at NAS CC during World's War II, but didn't make it. Mom, from PA state, visited CC during his short time there at the Station, and she never looked back, moving to CC just after the war. She met my father, who helped form the Corpus Christi Symphony in 1944 or 45. I was born in this city, but lived in Odem in the first few years before moving into CC (Annaville area just after it was annexed by CC in the mid-60s) for a short while. Unfortunately, we had to move to San Antonio in '73 for me to go to the school for the deaf there. I cursed that move, because our family life fell apart there. Quarenta today looks BAD compared to Annaville back in the early 70s! Mom knew people living in the nicest parts of the city by the coast. I remember visiting one of her friend's house, right by the coast, 2-story house with a pool, just a huge place, and with a maid and chauffeur. CC is unrecognizable except for the beaches and refineries.

OMG I am totally getting the "You did my city and totally missed so much!" reaction [and withholding those comments because it really doesn't matter.] A fun one you missed is that locals refer to it as "Corpus Christi, a sunny place for shady people" which I think captures the essence of Corpus nicely. I should have tried to connect with you before your visit. Wish I had known! Thanks for visiting our city! :)

Fantasic vid Nick. Lived there from '82 til '96 problem there is the city has always a stagnant city magement system, never wanted to move forward. So we moved to San Antonio, which used to be nice but all we see at the local HEB are immigrants with gift cards and brand new cell phones. A lady in feont of me bought a candy bar and got $48 back must be nice or the system is totally briken.

Lived there for the majority of my life. Left 3 years ago and went to San Antonio. It has really changed over the years. There is a local saying when something ghetto happens, “your Corpus is showing”. Corpus has a rough image. But there are some pockets of it that are still great. I really don’t miss the hurricanes.

Most cities on the Gulf Coast are struggling because people are fleeing them getting away from the floods and hurricanes. The economy is mainly tied to the oil business and the economy is not diversified as you would have in the cities of Texas being further inland with higher elevations and greater weather , that's why.
