Using Revell's 1/144 Type VII/C U-boat, I use a variety of easy techniques to get a faded, mottled, worn and battered look that you can replicate on your U-boat or other builds.
Black Basing, then chipping effects using Hairspray, followed by post shading, enamel washes then simple oil paint rendering.

Thanks for all the views and likes, this was a fun project! First of all, apologies for the up and down change in volume on the voiceover, I've sorted this out for the next video. Hope this format is coming over well, I'm getting a bit more comfortable filming these steps by steps and doing the voiceovers instead of the wall of text in the last Star Destroyer build video. Cheers, Chris

Coinciding with a new interest in Submarines is to combine this by resurrecting my long time, but sporadic interest in building models from plastic kits. My first build is a Revell German Type XXIII boat described as a weekend build but, I'm in no rush. Researching kit building Submarines is pretty cool too and that is how I found your channel. So thanks heaps for sharing your weathering techniques here and while my first build will be like, factory fresh with no weathering, a future build will be weathered to show a Submarine after a lengthy patrol in the Mediterranean or the North Atlantic. War Time secrecy means that I can't be too specific about the Subs actual location.😉 Thanks again for the tutorial.

I discovered less weathering works in a smaller scale. I built the 1/350 model and hand painted it. I did the Type VIIc I used Tamiya Slate Gray and Neutral Gray. Thinned black wash made a difference as well as being sparing with the rust. The smaller model was a challenge. Basic weathering made all the difference.

G'day Chris, That's an excellent job, even if you think it's a bit over the top. I've seen films and photographs of U-Boats that actually look worse than yours. When U-Boats came back into port for repairs and maintenance the last thing, if at all, was the condition of the hull and deck. Really deep rust might get a wire brushing and a lick of paint but otherwise the priority was to get them fixed, re-armed and back out to sea. WW1 and WW2 submarines are much more interesting to model because there were none of those dark blue/black tiles that one finds on modern subs. The all metal surfaces are actually easier to recreate weathering than modern subs which can look quite strange with areas that look new and others that are oddly weathered but never as much as metal, of course. Then there were the differences between different 'squadrons' or flotillas of U-Boats. Some were painted a much lighter grey while others were nearly black. If you've seen pics of the Type XXI they have on display in Germany, it's a uniform light sea grey but that is a new paint job depicting how a Type XXI would have looked right out of the shipyard. I like the look of modern subs but colour wise, they can be a little boring, mind you they are looked after much better than they would be during wartime. I've got a IX-C U-Boat to do shortly and your video has given me some great tips. Cheers, BH
@beckersmodels
@beckersmodels 3 жыл бұрын
Many thanks Bill, yes indeed some reference pictures look almost unreal for U-boats they are a fantastic canvas for painting and weathering - which is why I've got another one of these to do, and a 1/72 Type IX as the "ultimate" display model. The only modern sub I like the look of is the UK's Vanguard Trident subs, I have a picture of one that shows enormous variation in the an echoic tiles and with that big brutish set of shoulders on the main hull its just a menacing look vessel! Sadly, there's no real decent kit of it in a larger scale, the 1/350 Bronco doesnt have any of the tile detail (as far as I can see from review photos). I'll look forward to your IX as well! Cheers, Chris

Indeed, warships in general become rust buckets after a few weeks at sea. U-Boote were especially neglected as they, along with the Schnellboote were the cheap boats, there wasn't even the budget to keep them pretty. There were hundreds of them, and Hitler severely underfunded the navy.
@BillHalliwell
@BillHalliwell 9 ай бұрын
@@pukovnikklefeld G'day Puko, You're so right. Hitler publicly admitted he was a "terrible sailor" who was prone to sea sickness. Also, where he thought he was an expert at land warfare tactics etc., (which he wasn't), he also said he didn't understand the Kriegsmarine. That's probably a good thing too because if he had given Admiral Dönitz the 400+ U-Boats he'd pleaded for there would have been a significant chance they might have totally prevented merchant ships from supplying Great Britain. If Dönitz even had 250 U-Boats at the start of the war virtually nothing would have got through to England, including all the vital logistical cargo that was coming from the US. For instance, the 40-odd, old US Destroyers, given to Britain by FDR, would have easily been 'picked off' by a strong U-Boat force. Britain would have been in a most precarious position. Had they been, literally, starved, right from the beginning, then the strong anti-Churchill faction, led by people like Halifax, would have sued for a peace agreement with Hitler; the course of the rest of the 20th Century could have been much different. It's pretty much common knowledge that, in his memoirs, Churchill said the only thing that truly scared him was the U-Boat war in the Atlantic. He fully understood that the merchant ship 'lifeline' was the only thing between victory or defeat. He knew that even if FDR joined the war, their help would have been useless if they couldn't get their men and materiel to England. Cheers, Bill H.
@BillHalliwell

@@beckersmodels G'day Chris, Well, after all this time, I'm ashamed to admit that I still haven't tackled my submarine kits! I'm so easily distracted by new, exciting aircraft kits that come on the market and those I 'find' in my stash I'd forgotten about. But, I promise, I will get to a U-Boat. It's a pity there are so few WW2 British and American submarine kits available. Still, Kriegsmarine U-Boats were the 'stars' of the Battle of the Atlantic. I've also gone back and looked at your great video again and it's obvious to me that you didn't 'go over the top' with your weathering. U-Boats are one of the very few kit types you can go full-on 'Spanish' weathering. I purchased one of those big, expensive, aircraft books published by 'MIG' or whoever they are. The colour illustrations are magnificent and well worth the price of the book, however, when you get to the finished aircraft the 'Spanish-style' weathering is, frankly, ridiculous. I'm lucky enough to have a load of period photographs, mostly from the RAF that show, even at the height of the Battle of Britain etc., the RAF looked after their aircraft much better than the way the 'Spanish-style' would have us believe. From my time in the RAAF I can say that we maintained all our aircraft in near 'pristine' condition inside and out. Granted, apart from Vietnam, it was basically peacetime, however, when, for instance we participated in international C-130 gatherings, our aircraft were by far the best turned out, even better than the RAF's. That's going to get me some 'hate mail' for sure. 😉 Cheers, mate! Bill

Good question, we were all novices to begin with, you only learn and improve through trying. I would attempt one new attempt with each model and slowly build up confidence. Cheers Chris

@@beckersmodels I totally agree that one has to take the plunge. My concern centers on the myriad of paints, layers used, use of Hair Spray (I’m 72 yrs old. Hence the last time I can recall Hairspray use was in the the 60’s ). Does Revell provide detailed painting instructions or reference guides? Perhaps for a price you can provide a manual of instructions for painting, detailing, aging or know of a resource book that I can obtain? Thanks, Tim Mulhern

@@timmulhern8188 Revell are pretty thin on the ground for painting instructions - its generally one colour guide and thats it. Theres plenty of reference material available online for U-boats thankfully. I'm going to be doing a 1/72 U-boat sometime this year on KZbin and will be documenting the steps even more so then I do in this video, so stay tuned for that one! Cheers, Chris

Another question, what’s the paint name of the rust color, thank soy
@beckersmodels
@beckersmodels 3 жыл бұрын
Just a dirty orange brown I made up using Tamiya paints - base color red, yellow with some brown or black or even dark grey will give you that mix very quickly. Add more yellow for more vibrancy, more red to darken the value for real deep rust. Cheers, Chris.

Ships are not tanks. They don't weather the same..Rust streaks below the waterline? It won't happen (unless it's in drydock). In all pictures the heaviest weathering on Uboats is the chipping on the front part of the conning tower, next is the bow. Both areas received the hardest abuse from the sea...

I did not know they were tanks! Wow! You learn something everyday...as for drydock rust, well it is out of the water on a stand so where am I going wrong here? Oh and I've seen pictures of in service Uboats with more wear and rust than this one so.....

until 12 minutes she was clear, it seemed realistic to me .. at 12.45 minutes suddenly the whole became uniform and very dark .. as if she had fired point blank in a tanker..🔥🌚 ?

We all have different styles and ways of representing things - I tend more towards stylistic than realistic, particularly in the "small" scales. I have seen reference photos of even more dirty and dark subs!

I understand that you're just illustrating the basic technique but the result appears a bit overboard for an active duty naval vessel, especially one from Germany. If it was meant for one laying on the bottom for 10 or 15 years, it would be perfect.

There's color photograph proof of U-boats in worse condition than this, google "captured Type IX Uboat" for example. These vessels were beat up to shit from wartime conditions, bent railings from large waves, big patches of chipped paint and then rust from heavy duty patrols in the North Atlantic. Maybe at the start of the patrol or start of the war they were in okay condition, but the evidence shows they were heavily weathered. Maybe not all of them, but it happened. I'll be doing my 1/72 Type IX in even worse condition, all according to reference photos. Sorry, but war machines get weathered. No such thing as over weathered. Cheers, Chris

@@beckersmodels You're right, towards the end for sure, they were getting hammered, but normally when shipyards are not being bombed day and night they would be getting serviced and kept in reasonably good condition.

I still can't understand the attraction to weathering a model to intentionally make it look like a piece of trash. Imagine someone building a beautiful classic car and then "weathering" it to make it look like it was an abandoned barn find vehicle.

Because there's more than one hobby Mark... Some of us like to make a "museum replica", clean, exactly as it came out of the factory, perfect paint etc. Some like to build and paint it as it appeared in service, and most U-boats at the end of their patrol looked like trash or worse. Some like to go beyond "Reality" and make something artistic/stylistic to evoke reality but push it beyond... All of these are valid approaches and there's space in the hobby to appreciate all the different approaches...
