Nice job. I'm about two thirds through the built of the same kit, only I've changed from the scale I've used previously to built Submarine kit models from 1/144 to the larger still, 1/72. Staring in the face the reduction of fine motor skills and vision less sharp than it once was, moving the model around feels in some way that I'm toeing the plate at a game of Softball with the Submarine as the bat.

Thanks. I used enamel thinner because the streaking grime is enamel based (most weathering products are I think).

Great build. I've just bought this kit, looking forward to putting it together. It's my first naval model build (I tend to build aircraft). Was it easy for novices to construct? And have you thought about adding submarine lines to it?

Thanks. Yes, it was my first naval build too. I'd say it was pretty easy - a low parts count with the only fiddling bit being some of the railings on the coning tower.

@@ModelNerd I noticed it around 11:05 in the video, bottom-right corner. Almost at the end of the wooden deck, there's a hole inside an indentation. There's a small part (A31) that fit's in there. It doesn't detract from the build whatsoever, but is also an easy fix. Again, nice work overall. I have no idea what it is (escape hatch, ventilation, ...?), but my Haynes owner's manual is in the mail, so maybe I'll tell you in a few weeks :-). Speaking of Hayne's manuals : The Tank museum is selling them at roughly 25-30% of the listed Amazon price. (tankmuseumshop.org/collections/haynes-manuals/products/u-boat-owners-workshop-manual)

I’ve never understood, wouldn’t using paint thinner also remove the gray color of the sub?

Normally you would paint the model and weather it using different types of paint. In this case I painted it with acrylics, gave it a protective gloss coat, and then used a little white spirit to thin the enamel weathering effects. The white spirit shouldn't affect the underlying paint, especially if you're not scrubbing at it.

Thanks. That's a good idea - I'd be interested in buying a couple of sections of the hull with interior, if they sold them. Same thing for some of the large bombers like the B17 and Lancaster actually. No, I've never tried Citadel Air paints - I can't get them near me.

The \32 HK bombers and the new WnWs Lanc is where the 'sections' idea was born,i love building and detailing cockpits.But i have'nt got the space for the whole thing.The Aftermarket companys would benefit from the idea as well.I only found Citadel air because its the only option locally in emergency,they are made for minature painting and have a really fine pigment.For interiors they are very good,you can put down a lot of layers without tolerance related fit issues.

I have same boat I´m going to bouild soon. But at first I´m going to cut out all the limber holes from the outher hull and made a fake innerhull or pressurhull. I have even ordered a Photo etch kit for this typical sub. It was very hard to find and was very expensive.

I work in a model warehouse/store. The MSRP for this specific one, “Atlantic Version”, is about $24.95, while the newest one, “Das Boot Version” from the movie, is about $29.95. it includes some paints, glue, and a good sized poster. The fit looks to be very nice, and it even has the decals for the movie’s U-96 U-Boat Type VII.

I was under the impression that typically you paint the individual pieces before assembly. Is that not always true, or just discretionary?

It varies a lot. For something like a tank, which is essentially a box, you can probably built the whole thing before painting. For an F1 car there will be lots of subassemblies or individual parts that need painting first (suspension, engine, seat) - even more so with complex paint schemes. Something like this sub was a bit inbetween, but more towards the "tank" direction.

I’m making a diorama of a fleet with the king George v, Rodney, naiad, e class destroyer and a o class destroyer in 1/700. Should I add a couple u boats attacking? Would it make sense?

Hi Dylan. I guess it could make sense - although I imagine it would make one huge diorama. The ships and u-boat would take up a fair bit of space even at 1/700, and of course the u-boat would need to be a certain distance from the ships if it were firing upon them. Maybe a diorama where the u-boat is surfaced after taking damage, prior to being captured?

I have a lot of 1/144 planes. I am going to do a passenger transfer (probably Hitler) boarding the sub from a floatplane, in the middle of the rough Atlantic sea diorama, set on a nice wooden base. Call it "The Argentinian Express". I Never put it together before that 1/144 subs and 1/144 aircraft, are in the same scale. LoL Epic face-palm.

I haven't seen the Trumpeter kit but I think there is an Italeri kit with a basic interior. I don't believe it is anywhere near as detailed or busy as the real thing though.

I'm just wondering this looks as though it would have enough room to fit a rubber motor inside to use it on a boating lake. Would have to use a waterproof glue. Nice model though. Thanks for sharing video.

The detail was generally good. There was quite a bit of flash on a few parts - especially the railings, which were a bit hard to clean up. But not too bad.

I used gloss after painting and before weathering, then matte after weathering. Depending on how thick the matte coat is, it will have something of a satin finish still.

I used Tamiya TS 6 as the all-over black to paint a Trumpeter USS Gato type Submarine. I'm not so pleased with the result of an all black boat, yet, that's apparently an authentic representation. I took a pic of USS Bowfish moored at Pearl Harbour in 1980 and the boat was painted grey, perhaps a more modern rendering.

Hi Dan. I use regular Tamiya Cement (white bottle top). I like the quick stuff (green top) but can't stand the smell.

Yes, the Tamiya XFs are matt. But I added a gloss coat before using the weathering effects.

Two things: first, it provides a smooth surface for the decals (not so significant in this kit since there aren't many). Second, it protects the paint underneath from the weathering effects. Gloss allows the effects to flow better than a matt coat.
