Dual clutch transmissions are taking over the world, they are great but are we missing out on the joy of the manual transmission?

Most people say that a manual is more involving. Of course it is, there are 4 points of contact as opposed to 2 on the DCT. The 4 points of contact are: 1. Steering wheel 2. Gear shift (stick) 3. Clutch and 4. Gas / brake. In other words all your limbs are literally engaged and therefore you are getting more feedback and your brain is more rewarded with sensation and involvement. The DCT on the other hand cuts that involvement by 50% by eliminating the clutch and gear stick. Now the only points of contact are gas/brake and steering wheel. Maybe 2.5 if you count the steering wheel operated paddles as an additional point of contact. I don't. But let's not kid ourselves, the DCT is faster and more efficient. So if track time matters to you (or gas mileage), the DCT is the way, but if you want to have fun and be more engaged, the manual is the way to go.

Actually, track times would be better with a manual. If you got rid of all the little bells and whistles that limit you on a dct, and made it where it's essentially a manual without the need to operate the clutch, and it shifted instantly and smoothly, than yes it would have better track times, and equally as good, if not better handling capabilities.

+Daniel Mirzotti I think the dealers push them because they charge more and make more profit for the option. Plus they're idiot proof and people who care more about bragging about generating numbers on a spreadsheet can talk about the faster shifts. As Nick says here I'd think most people buy sports cars for driving enjoyment, not to generate numbers.
@Beolex
@Beolex 9 жыл бұрын
maxpowers3732 Without a doubt they push them. More commission money for them because the car's MSRP jumps up, easier to order/deliver to the customer (manuals have a much longer waiting time), and also these DCT's will cost more to service than a manual, so more money for the service department. And then of course the demographic of ///M car buyers has changed. It used to be about people who liked an engine they can work on and a clutch pedal they can use. Now ///M cars are made in higher volumes and are much easier to drive, so you'll get both car guys and non car guys buying them. For example, the 997 GT3 Porsche was a car for car guys. 6-speed manual and not too many electronic nannies. The new 991 GT3 has a PDK so you have people like clueless housewives driving it because it has an automatic drive mode.
@Beolex
@Beolex 9 жыл бұрын
***** It's a faster transmission, but that doesn't mean you're a faster driver. A fast driver is a mentality and skillset, a fast driver ISN'T having a dual clutch transmission or for example 1000hp. A fast driver knows how to apex around a corner, knows how much steering input to give, knows how to modulate his gas and brake (and left foot brake), knows how to prevent understeer and manage oversteer... THIS is a fast driver. If you give a novice an M3/M4 with DCT, it will not make him a faster driver. He just happens to be piloting a fast car. A decent driver with track/autocross experience in a manual M3/M4 will beat an average Joe in a DCT M3/M4. Not to mention, most of the owners that drive these cars don't track them regularly, so the whole "it's faster" argument can fly out the window. In the real world a manual vs. DCT M3/M4 are equally as fast because you're both gonna end up side by side at the next red traffic light, the next construction zone, the next rush hour freeway... completely useless in the real world.

Once the Warranty runs out I wouldn't recommend Automatic vehicles . New Automatic Gearboxes often are more expensive to repair than replacing the engine Modern Mechanics will tell you " You need a new Gearbox " even if the same only needs a sensor , to try to get more money from you
@briand2195
@briand2195 8 жыл бұрын
bingo, though they only get complex with dct a torque converter driven gearbox is fairly simple, I'd argue even more so than a older manual gear box. often times though they do know better and try to rip you off. last time I ever brought my car into a shop, it had a bad shift solinoid, they were going to charge me $2.5k for a rebuild for a $12.50 part, it does require you to drop the tranny and open it up to get to the solenoid but last time I checked opening it up and replacing a single sensor doesn't constitute a rebuild. at this point point was already set in my mind I was going to do it myself, but I felt the need to prod the mech. for trying to pull one over on me, so I asked since your doing a rebuild do I have any warranty on the new parts and rebuild, such as the torque converter, he said no because they aren't going to be replaced, so I asked how can you call it a rebuild if you are rebuilding or changing anything, now your flat out telling me I'm paying over 2k and my torque converter could go a week later and it'll cost me another 2k? AL WAYS do your own research if I didn't prior to going to the shop I might have spent 2k on the replacement of a $12 part.

Having owned a E-46 six speed manual, and now a DCT M-4 I think both have value as far as fun, but when I took the DCT for the first test run before buying, it blew me away...had to trade up because of the transmission more than anything. I also find that it is much nicer when stuck in traffic or just taking it easy, but if you want to hoon it up, there is a lot of fun to be had with the lightning quick, sharp shifts...

This put me in half. My first car was a manual, being a teenager I was very excited to have a manual, and now I have a automatic. As an adult it is more practical and saves a lot of energy especially when you're on a long drive with traffic. My final thoughts are, the manual is more fun to drive but the DCT has better responsive time that gives you a stronger kick.

My two cents: Automatic has reached a point where it will mostly be faster than a manual. Okay. That being said, many MANY car enthusiasts are not race car drivers and are not out to set lap records, and their typical canyon run does not include live timing or shit like that so... for me at least, its all about fun. So Manual it is.

theRealAV8r Sales statistics don't really mean much. How do you know the reason more people buy more automatics, isn't because they'd prefer to text and drive? You said you drove many decades denoting your age, and the little feller that was agreeing with you states he's only been driving for a few years... I'm neither young, nor old. I've owned many cars, both manual and automatic. Manuals keep people engaged more so than automatics. Ergo, automatics are for lazy/old people that either can't or won't move their arms and legs.

+Bryan Doherty I can guarantee you that an experienced driver can face a DCT anytime, 7 gears against 5 or 6. You don't have to shift through all that gears. Drag racers have 2 or 3 gears, and for good reason, and they can still shift hella fast.
@bryandoherty9399
@bryandoherty9399 9 жыл бұрын
Cristian Ceclan I was thinking just regular day to day driving. I'm sure an experienced driver using a dog clutch manual can shift just as fast or many even faster than a DCT. But with a synchro manual which is what every road car has can't shift that fast. You can shift them that fast but it's bad for them, where a dog clutch you have to slam into gear, or you'll break it. I'm not arguing against you, I just thought of it that way. I'm assuming dragsters use dog clutch manuals as those transmissions are for Motorsport purposes

ImBarryScottCSS A DCT is an automated manual transmission. I say that because a typical DCT has a very similar build to a manual transmission. But the computer moves the shift forks and controls the 2 clutches. A typical automatic transmission in a car is nothing but a set(or more) of planetary gear sets that change ratios based on engaged clutch packs. Which in term are pre set by hydraulic pressure in the valve system (transmission RPM, newer ones use computers in combination) and a torque converter with lockup clutch to send power to the transmission. 100% self controlled...automatic. So in a way a DCT is, but at the same time is not, an automatic transmission. Just mess with the paddles and suddenly it's an automated manual, but then put it in drive and it's an automatic transmission.

Manual all the way. It's where the skill and enthusiasm comes, and connects driver to the car. The rev matching is neat, possibly better for the drivetrain. That said I've never had a drivetrain issue in 150,000 miles on my manual Mustang including rev matching, heal-toe downshifting, drag racing, multi gear downshifts, engine braking in daily rush hour traffic, etc. Wouldn't trade a manual for anything.

Manual shift will always be a more intimate and rewarding driving experience in my opinion. I own a DSG GTI and a 6spd manual e92 M3. I don't necessarily miss the clutch when I drive the GTi- but there are times when the gearbox gets confused and it is annoying. Two different cars I know but the point is- even the best DCT's, DSG's etc can be a little cumbersome and the manual is always on point.

DCT has the advantage of having an automatic mode for city driving, and a responsive manual mode for the open road. Its disadvantage is that most manufacturers haven't yet got the technology quite right; there are still many jerckiness problems when moving from standstill.
@unnamedny

There is one big flaw with DCT transmission that almost no one ever mentions. It's very slow on downshifting. Reason is, when you step the gas pedal it kicks in 1st gear and sets 2nd gear to be next, then 3rd etc. In DCT it pretty much has next gear ready to kick it all the time, if you need to downshift 2 gears, it's very slow, because it needs to engage clutch at your request and not at the request of the computer. This is the reason why DCT's are jerky in slow moving traffic, you press on gas and transmission sets the next gear, but then you slow down, computer gets sort of confused on which gear you need next.

Not the same type of engagement, the car is still doing everything for you. The fact that you can stall the car if you dont know to drive it properly proves just how much more engaging it is. The fact that you can throw it into the wrong gear and blow your shit up is proof. Sure these dont sound like good things, but the point is youre TRULY engaged to the car. The shifter is mechanically physically connected to the trans gears and the clutch is physically connecting the engine and trans to allow movement. Paddles are just buttons that tell the car "ok now"

A manual clutch can be upgraded to a double clutch system and it is still a manual. It works by having another clutch be constantly engaged and another one connected to it that disengages through direct spring material with additional springs for smoothness. It does make engagement much quicker on a manual :D i wanna do it on my e60 m5.

I have been driving a Manual ever since I got my licence 25 years ago, I recently got my first DCT car. Manual will always be more engaging,fun, more in tune with the car, but now that I'm at a older age, could not care as much racing the guy next to me, I really am tired getting stuck in traffic burning my clutch, also since I have more responsibilities family,mortgage,saving on fuel is a big welcome. I owned a 540i with a big V8, tons of power, and a manual from an M5. When you drive a powerful car with a manual, it’s way easier because you don’t need the car to be in the exact right gear for your speed and load. The car can pull in most gears at most speeds. My MX-5 needs to be in the exact right gear. Fortunately, it’s a joy to shift any MX-5. Even in traffic.

Actually, a DCT is more of a hybrid as it can shift automatically or on demand yet it has clutches rather than a torque converter that control a pair of manual-type gear boxes....odd number and even number gears. This gives it the advantages of both transmission types and allows the driver to concentrate 100% on driving with zero chance of a missed shift or mishandling the clutch.

+NickMurray dual clutch transmissions ARE automatic transmissions. Im a mechanical engineer and I understand all of the engineering differences compared to a traditional automatic. DCTs are great from a engineering perspective but from a driver perspective they are STILL automatic transmissions that eliminate almost all driver engagement and control. They still do all of the driver's work for him/her. NO clutch peddle engagement, automatic gear changes, it does launch control for you, etc. In terms of the driver's experience its a automatic transmission.

6MT with a Burger Motorsports Modified Clutch Delay Valve coupled with Sprint Booster, and RTD's short shifter (race lever height) has definitely reduced my lap times. Granted its not OEM but it gives the DCT equipped BMWs a run for their money at the track. Total outlay: $25 + $290 + $618 = $933. Just choose the BM CDV and Sprint Booster as the most economical configuration. If your car is dedicated track, then perhaps adding the RTD shifter along with an Auto-Blip ($395) could help you in your decision of choosing the 6MT configuration (I only say this as an option for the readers).

Manuals keep you busier, which can make relatively tame driving seem more exciting ("engaging, "involving," etc.). However, I personally find that driving enthusiastically on a challenging road (or even better, on a track) keeps me plenty busy without me having to take one hand off the wheel and focus on heel-and-toeing and whatnot. There is so much to focus on if you want to perfect your driving that having an extra task just seems like it makes it much less likely that you'll get good at the rest.

Tommy Lainio I was talking about whether manuals are better for fun driving in which you're trying to find your own limits. In that case, changing gears (the old-fashioned way) is just an added distraction that most likely slows you down and prevents you from focusing on more rewarding stuff (getting the right line, weight transfer, smooth inputs, etc.). I agree that driving a manual leaves much less room for fumbling around with a phone, though it can definitely still be done if you're driving at a fairly constant speed and don't need to change gears much.

Technically I can put it into two different sport mode or paddle shift it or just put it into Drive and it will cycle through all six gears naturally. I’ve noticed driving down steep roads like 7% drops. I don’t even have to apply the brakes the DCT could since this and it self adjusted by engine braking.
