An advice to those with DCT and adaptive cruise: if you get in bumper-to-bumper trafffic, set your following distance to max. At those speeds, the car will maintain a following distance large enough to just continuously drive in first gear. It's always better to move slowly than to stop-and-go, and drivers who need to get to the exits in such traffic will appreciate the distance you leave, as they can use your gap to pass.

What about just switching to manual and using first gear? My Africa Twin motorcycle was DCT and slow speed maneuvering offroad, that is a must in adventure riding, was done via manual mode and using the paddle shifters!
Жыл бұрын
@@jammcguire1276 first gear is too short for that, half as short as a first gear in a manual. In a manual you can push gas until 3500-4000RPM in first gear and get to 30-35km/h, in a DCT you'll barely get to 20 and it will blow hot air at you. In addition, throttle response is very jerky in first gear. So better to just let it shift but leave a good room so it doesn't slip the clutch as much.

I have a feeling a lot of the people who complain about jerkiness and hesitation in DCTs just don't understand how they work and try to treat them like an automatic. Being a driver who actually loves driving his 2017 Fiesta SE, this is a great video. The most basic functionalities you cover here, are all present on Ford's DPS6 DCT, used on both the Fiesta and Focus automatics, as well as other vehicles, which became a very hot point in the early 2010's, and lasting several years. Ford never trained drivers of it's DCT's, how to drive them properly when they bought them new, and it had several large issues with the DPS6 early on. Perfect storm... As you highlight well here, they should NOT be driven the same as a CVT, or a hydraulically actuated automatic. I WOULD PUT GOOD MONEY, ON AUDI AND VW AS A WHOLE, having an in-depth training video you are asked to watch, on buying your new DCT car, which trains you on operating the DCT's correctly, and optimally.

A lot of new DCT drivers, who are unaware of how a DCT transmission really works, think it should feel like a hydraulic clutch, or CVT, without much noticeable forces occurring at shift points, or, in fact, no shift points at all. After driving the new BMW ZF box in the M3, I've kinda started loving the torque converter once again. It's very responsive and downshifts with ease, not to bash DCTs but their extra maintenence costs and fragile nature makes me prefer BMWs conventional modernized sport auto. With the Beemer in real life it's hard to tell the difference in shift speeds against a DCT especially when it's turbo is nullifying any loss of momentum one might expect. Audi also uses this system in their RS5, I hope you try it if you haven't because it's the best trade off I've ever experienced which also allows you freedom to creep in traffic without clutch judder.

There is a very mild difference between D and N when you have the brake depressed. If you are going to just idle you can just leave it in drive. If you want to rev the engine past idle for whatever reason put it in N and it will rev slightly smoother. If you want to power launch it like a regular auto and you don’t have a launch button plus a disregard for longevity then rev the engine till you feel it biting and let go of the brake then give it a second before dumping the accelerator.

So if I'm cruising down the road in 3rd with the DCT ready to go into 4th, but then decide to change lane and accelerate hard, the DCT has to shift to 2nd, there's a slight delay as the DCT quickly tries to change from the pre-chosen 4th gear to 2nd gear. I'ts GREAT to have choices. With joint issues, rack and pinion steering (old school was ALL human effort - no power assist), and manual transmissions are a BIG problem on very bad days, and can aggravate the problem. So I'm very grateful for the fact that most cars, including rentals are now automatics.

Placing your foot on the brake pedal whilst in gear activates the clutch plates to disengage. This overheats the DCT transmission. DCT transmissions should never be two footed (one on gas and other on brake)
@BrosFOURRSpeed5 ай бұрын
When did I say to drive with two feet?
@azmathchoudhury8702Ай бұрын
Why would clutch plates being disengaged create heat in the transmission? Worse would be clutch IS engaged but you're braking it from moving forward
@novemberromeo2500Ай бұрын
@@azmathchoudhury8702 By slightly touching the brake pedal whilst trying to reverse up a hill in a DCT transmission, you'll receive "Trans Oil at Temp" lights. It causes the clutch plates to "feather" where the friction of the plates causes the transmission oil to over heat.

One thing that is not entirely correct. A DSG gearbox is not like an automatic gearbox with a regular clutch instead of a torque converter. An ald school automatic is a torque converter with a set of planetary gears to shift gears. Manual is a set of gear pairs connected to a clutch. A DSG is more like 2 manual gearboxes with regular clutches that is controlled automaticaly. So it is more like 2 robotic manual gearboxes coupled each with a regular clutch. And that is the beauty of it. It has the efficiency benefits of a manual gearbox (since it is two manual gearboxes) while simultaneously having most of the benefits of an automatic gearbox (since it is robotically controlled) The main downside is that with a torque converter you can basically creep on the torque converter (in stop and go traffic) indefinitely as long as the cooling system is working) without damaging the gearbox. With a DSG you will eventually wear out the clutches in stop-go traffic since this causes a lot of wear on the clutches. You could of course create a DSG with two gearboxes with planetary gears (as in automatics) and couple them with two clutches but since planetary gears are heavier it would not get as good fuel economy as a gear pair geearbox.

In a torque converter auto when stopped for a while in traffic it's ok to put on the handbrake while leaving it in Drive so you can rest your foot. I do this quite a lot. Is this possible in a DCT or would the clutch be slipping while the car is just being held by the handbrake?
@BrosFOURRSpeed Жыл бұрын
Yeah I feel in a DCT the car knows when you take your foot off the brake and tries to engage the clutches. So i'd put it in neutral if you're going to do that

About creeping. How would you creep with manual transmission. I do not see how it would differ from manual. In such a traffic you just creep 😄
@BrosFOURRSpeed Жыл бұрын
Pretty much the same. In a manual you'd just feather the gas and let off the clutch a bit to roll then your press the clutch and stop. Similar concept. You'll be slipping the clutch. In both transmissions just try to limit creeping to not slip the clutch so much
