An advice to those with DCT and adaptive cruise: if you get in bumper-to-bumper trafffic, set your following distance to max. At those speeds, the car will maintain a following distance large enough to just continuously drive in first gear. It's always better to move slowly than to stop-and-go, and drivers who need to get to the exits in such traffic will appreciate the distance you leave, as they can use your gap to pass.

What about just switching to manual and using first gear? My Africa Twin motorcycle was DCT and slow speed maneuvering offroad, that is a must in adventure riding, was done via manual mode and using the paddle shifters!
Жыл бұрын
@@jammcguire1276 first gear is too short for that, half as short as a first gear in a manual. In a manual you can push gas until 3500-4000RPM in first gear and get to 30-35km/h, in a DCT you'll barely get to 20 and it will blow hot air at you. In addition, throttle response is very jerky in first gear. So better to just let it shift but leave a good room so it doesn't slip the clutch as much.

I have a feeling a lot of the people who complain about jerkiness and hesitation in DCTs just don't understand how they work and try to treat them like an automatic. They definitely require a bit more thought and foresight to drive smoothly, but leaving gaps and keeping stop and go to a minimum is pretty standard for economical driving in general.

@@BrosFOURRSpeed I went on Google and tapped in 'Living with i-shift / 2006 + Honda Civic Forum. It explains everything on how to drive the car properly. It says that whenever we get to a traffic light we should brake and/or also pull up the handbrake if car is on a decline. Since when we press the brake, the clutch will be disengaged so no wear. However, if we keep putting it in neutral the clutch will wear.

Nice hearing about these tips, I recently got my drivers licence and take my dads vw golf7 quite frequently, it has a 1.8 tdi with a dsg as well and I genuinely love how it drives. Quite weird is that the hill start assist for some reason does not disengage automatically, only when you press the accelerator, in this car it is called auto hold, not sure if that is different from hill start assist, also a green light comes on the dash when it's active, to be honest I like it better this way because at traffic lights you don't have to constantly hold your foot on the brake

Being a driver who actually loves driving his 2017 Fiesta SE, this is a great video. The most basic functionalities you cover here, are all present on Ford's DPS6 DCT, used on both the Fiesta and Focus automatics, as well as other vehicles, which became a very hot point in the early 2010's, and lasting several years. Ford never trained drivers of it's DCT's, how to drive them properly when they bought them new, and it had several large issues with the DPS6 early on. Perfect storm... As you highlight well here, they should NOT be driven the same as a CVT, or a hydraulically actuated automatic. I WOULD PUT GOOD MONEY, ON AUDI AND VW AS A WHOLE, having an in-depth training video you are asked to watch, on buying your new DCT car, which trains you on operating the DCT's correctly, and optimally.

A lot of new DCT drivers, who are unaware of how a DCT transmission really works, think it should feel like a hydraulic clutch, or CVT, without much noticeable forces occurring at shift points, or, in fact, no shift points at all. It should feel like a manual, only faster, shorter, and smoother shifting in economic modes in low gears, and longer, higher rpm lower gear shifting in sport modes.@@BrosFOURRSpeed

After driving the new BMW ZF box in the M3, I've kinda started loving the torque converter once again. It's very responsive and downshifts with ease, not to bash DCTs but their extra maintenence costs and fragile nature makes me prefer BMWs conventional modernized sport auto. With the Beemer in real life it's hard to tell the difference in shift speeds against a DCT especially when it's turbo is nullifying any loss of momentum one might expect. Audi also uses this system in their RS5, I hope you try it if you haven't because it's the best trade off I've ever experienced which also allows you freedom to creep in traffic without clutch judder.
@BrosFOURRSpeed

What extra maintenance costs are you referring to? I owned a GTR for 5.5 years with a DCT and there was nothing in maintenance to do with that! Had 50K miles on it when I sold it, and no issues came up. The ZF is definitely a great automatic for sure, both of them would be the one to get for a true sportscar and quick shifts!

There is a very mild difference between D and N when you have the brake depressed. If you are going to just idle you can just leave it in drive. If you want to rev the engine past idle for whatever reason put it in N and it will rev slightly smoother. If you want to power launch it like a regular auto and you don’t have a launch button plus a disregard for longevity then rev the engine till you feel it biting and let go of the brake then give it a second before dumping the accelerator.

A dual clutch transmission (DCT) does not need a torque converter or a clutch pedal. The first clutch controls odd gears and the second clutch controls the even gears. Volkswagen's Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) is one of them.

In my normal automatic car, I feather the brake and let off very slowly so that I come to a very nice pleasant smooth stop.. You cannot do that in a DCT, you can feel the engine start to big down and the clutch start to slip and the car does not like it... Only option is to just brake abruptly so that it never gets to that point of the clutch slipping... Might just be a thing on the santa fe, but I absolutely hate it and I am very glad it is my wife's car and not mine lol. It drives me nuts

Hello , Ioniq dry DCT here, then when you are in a bumper-to-bumper trafffic what you must to avoid is to release the brake pedal without press the gas pedal, right?
@fenegroni
@fenegroni 6 ай бұрын
On mine (Kia DCT-7) I let go of the brake, and the car quickly shifts to 2nd gear. It helps a lot if the car is in eco mode as it will be quite eager to upshift yet keep the revs low enough to just crawl, no need to press the accelerator.
@timeformetoact6

You can downshift fast while accelerating, you just have to press the gas petal a bit before shifting. This way the DSG preselects the lower gear instead of the higher gear.

@@BrosFOURRSpeed true, but depends on if you were already accelerating or just started. If you are coasting and already in a high gear, if you depress the gas hard enough the DSG will pre-select a lower gear instead of the higher gear. It works off the same logic as if you were in Drive.

I tried it yesterday, cruising around 65mph, press gas to about 80% or more quickly, it drops to 3rd after about 1 second delay and takes off. Then it will quickly up-shift back to 6th so fast didn’t even notice if it skips up.
@PaulyDownUnder
@PaulyDownUnder Жыл бұрын
So if I'm cruising down the road in 3rd with the DCT ready to go into 4th, but then decide to change lane and accelerate hard, the DCT has to shift to 2nd, there's a slight delay as the DCT quickly tries to change from the pre-chosen 4th gear to 2nd gear. In this case what is better, should I live with the slight delay and let the DCT do its thing or should I pre-emptively manually change into 2nd and then make the lane change?

Let go of the gas pedal briefly as you decide to change lane, that will preempt the shift to 2nd in manual mode a little. On mine in Sport mode, any hesitation of the throttle engages the lower gear as it expects an acceleration thereafter

In what scenario do i use neutral in DCT? From what i understand, you don't need to put the car in neutral during traffic. So what is the neutral for then? Sorry if it's a dumb question I'm new to DCT

@@BrosFOURRSpeed thank you for the prompt reply. Last question though (sorry 😅) during heavy traffic, can i put the gear in park? In the video you said that we just need to step on the break during a stop light however from where i live, it's usually standstill in heavy traffic. Let's say 5-10 minutes standstill. Can i put it in park? I think stepping on the break for 10 minutes straight isn't good.

I'ts GREAT to have choices. With joint issues, rack and pinion steering (old school was ALL human effort - no power assist), and manual transmissions are a BIG problem on very bad days, and can aggravate the problem. So I'm very grateful for the fact that most cars, including rentals are now automatics.

Placing your foot on the brake pedal whilst in gear activates the clutch plates to disengage. This overheats the DCT transmission. DCT transmissions should never be two footed (one on gas and other on brake)

@@azmathchoudhury8702 By slightly touching the brake pedal whilst trying to reverse up a hill in a DCT transmission, you'll receive "Trans Oil at Temp" lights. It causes the clutch plates to "feather" where the friction of the plates causes the transmission oil to over heat.

One thing that is not entirely correct. A DSG gearbox is not like an automatic gearbox with a regular clutch instead of a torque converter. An ald school automatic is a torque converter with a set of planetary gears to shift gears. Manual is a set of gear pairs connected to a clutch. A DSG is more like 2 manual gearboxes with regular clutches that is controlled automaticaly. So it is more like 2 robotic manual gearboxes coupled each with a regular clutch. And that is the beauty of it. It has the efficiency benefits of a manual gearbox (since it is two manual gearboxes) while simultaneously having most of the benefits of an automatic gearbox (since it is robotically controlled) The main downside is that with a torque converter you can basically creep on the torque converter (in stop and go traffic) indefinitely as long as the cooling system is working) without damaging the gearbox. With a DSG you will eventually wear out the clutches in stop-go traffic since this causes a lot of wear on the clutches. You could of course create a DSG with two gearboxes with planetary gears (as in automatics) and couple them with two clutches but since planetary gears are heavier it would not get as good fuel economy as a gear pair geearbox.

In a torque converter auto when stopped for a while in traffic it's ok to put on the handbrake while leaving it in Drive so you can rest your foot. I do this quite a lot. Is this possible in a DCT or would the clutch be slipping while the car is just being held by the handbrake?

Pretty much the same. In a manual you'd just feather the gas and let off the clutch a bit to roll then your press the clutch and stop. Similar concept. You'll be slipping the clutch. In both transmissions just try to limit creeping to not slip the clutch so much
