His drumming during the bands heyday was integral to the sophisticated sound of Kansas. His style is as enjoyable as Barriemore Barlow of the classic Jethro Tull days. Steve Hackett had such respect that on his album Please Don't Touch invited him as a guest artist along with Steve Walsh,.

Being a teenager in the 70's, I went to so many concerts. I saw all the great bands except for Led Zep and Floyd. Kansas, I always said, was the greatest band I ever saw LIVE. The energy Steve Walsh had onstage was unmatched. It was like watching a gymnast perform on Keyboards and singing with one of ROCK's greatest vocals. I don't know who is left from the original Kansas, but it should be a high energy show. Enjoy my friends. Jeff

What a coincidence -- Last May I also drove across Kansas to Denver, in a rented car with a nice stereo, listening to Kansas albums! This album, Leftoverture, has some nice classical passages in the middle of them. The fugue in "Miracles" is very well done, and quite elaborate. The next song on side one of Leftoverture, "Opus Insert", has another interesting passage, a classical march, which is also quite enjoyable. Funny how nowadays, everyone bundles it all into one thing, and calls it "proggy". My niece saw Kansas live a couple months ago, and I wish I had the chance to see them again!

The interlude in the middle had to be inspired by Gentle Giant. As others have mentioned below, their debut album is really great, so you should check that out.
@mvunit3 Жыл бұрын
Checkout "The Spider" which is the intro for "Portrait (He Knew)" and "Paradox" both off of Point of Know Return, you'll hear the influence even more. Kerry Livgren was definitely a fan because he quotes liner notes from GG's "Acquired Taste" album in his book; "Seed's of Change" 🙂.
@DocSardo Жыл бұрын
@@mvunit3 And they were obviously inspired by Genesis as well. Case in point, the ending of this song.
@mvunit3 Жыл бұрын
@@DocSardo I'm not sure about that. If you watched the Doc, Phil Ehart had said that; "It wasn't the British Invasion, quote on quote, that influenced Kansas, it was the Black Musicians". Dave Hope continued; "Wilson Pickett, White Soul; the Young Rascals, just that kind of stuff - I love R&B!". Steve Walsh; "People like Stevie Wonder were inspiring". Steinhardt; "Wilson Pickett and James Brown were my all time favorite _screamers_ and I wanted to learn that scream, but I could never scream like that". Ehart continued; "Unbeknownst to me, my band-mates were listening to the Radio at the same time, to the same stuff because we all were in Topeka. So when we got together to play, we didn't like bust-in into some Yes song or something, we were playing The Four Tops, you know, we were playing Otis Redding, we were playing The Temptations. Those are the songs we played!" Also in Kerry's book "Seeds of Change" he practically said the same, and surprisingly said about Yes, they were too "Flowery" for him :P. But "Classical" music was a huge influence for him personally, being that he was raised on it from a great Aunt who was an appreciator of the music, and other family members were also musicians. I don't recall that Kerry ever mentioned Genesis. Ironically, I did see a double-header Concert with Kansas & "Yes", in 2000 for the "Somewhere to Elsewhere Tour" and it was incredible! I've heard soo much music of various types, that I'll hear something familiar that someone did _before_ or after (and many times from opposite genres), and have to think it all comes from Classical music, and something your ear picked-up on the radio, and it stuck. I can't though, imagine Kansas would _pinch_ a section for their music, Kerry, Steve and the band were too proud of their contributions to do that, from hearing interviews and reading about them. Kerry seemed to be the one into a few Prog band's like Gentle Giant: gentlegiantmusic.com/GG/Kerry_Livgren There is this interview with Kerry, talking a bit about what he heard as a child, he also says something interesting at the end if the band had come out now: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3XUe3pobJ50nZIsi=l-hjqGY6950AVJJF .
