Ted Turner is the guitarist who played the quiet solo during the first passage, and Andy Powell is the guitarist who does the fast solo in the second passage. During a sound check with Richie Blackmore (when Wishbone Ash opened for Deep Purple) Powell and Blackmore jammed and as a result, Blackmore recommended them to his producer & record label and the rest as they say is history. My favorite song on Argus is “Throw Down the Sword”. Great example of their legendary duel lead guitar sound on that track.

Well, they did have superstar status.....in the '70's. By the time 'Live Dates' came out they were one of the biggest bands in the rock world. I saw them headline at Reading festival in '74 and the crowd was probably 6 figures. The Album Wishbone 4 dented their progress somewhat, although it is one of my favourites but they went on to be big throughout the 70's and '80's pretty much. I've seen them 40 or 50 times, last time earlier this year. Andy Powell is the only remaining original member but they still record original music and although Andy's voice was never as good as Martin Turner's the band still put on a great show, musically technically brilliant.

Argus was the 3rd album, I bought it on release day and still have it (and many others!). Try "The King Will Come" for a bit of harmonised guitar solo, but they were so much more. Fantastic production probably on analogue 16 track recording desk. Argus is packed with great tracks. Try the 2nd album Pilgrimage (1971), track Jailbait for great blues rock and dual guitar harmony. Thanks again!

I always come here because I love the NicknLex reactions but I think it needs to be pointed out how great you and your subscribers are and the amount of music knowledge you both have. When I was younger I bet 90% of the music I listened to was by ten bands. I just really want to say how much I appreciate all the "new" bands you and your subscribers have introduced to me. I love this place.

I was given a DVD about the recording of the Argus album. According to that guitarist Andy Powell had recorded two different solos for the track Throw Down The Sword & couldn't decide which one to use. He was listening back to the track with one solo on the left channel & one on the right (simultaneously). Someone suggested having it like that on the album,so that's what happened.

The story goes that the guy who designed the album cover for Argus was in the studio that day, and he suggested they use both solos, one on top of the other. This is in Powell’s autobiography “Eyes Wide Open”.

2nd post of the day, hope you don't mind. 1972 was a good year for a 16 year old, my first ever gig was an open air affair, here is a list of the bands I saw that day, ELP, Wishbone Ash, Genesis and Dutch band Focus, what a day. Also that year I saw Rory Gallagher. Watching your channel is bringing so many memories flooding back. I have 2 requests for you to consider, Pictures at an Exhibition by ELP, and Keyboardist Rick Wakeman of Yes fame did solo albums, any one of those I think you will love, Thanks Guys.

With Jimi, Zep, Yes, King Crimson, Floyd, The Who, The Allman Brothers, Clapton (Cream, Blind Faith, and Derek and the Dominos), Tull, Airplane, Quicksilver, The Dead, Deep Purple, etc. taking up so much musical energy of the time, it was easy to miss some. I haven't listened to any Wishbone Ash in quite a while, which is totally my fault, and will be rectified! Thanks for the reminder!

Argus - superb album, from another of the great under-rated British prog/rock bands of the 1970s, and with the great Andy Powell. Great reaction, guys. Plenty more Ash to go at - check out e.g. "Persephone". Interesting you mentioned (the superb) Renaissance too. Andy had links with them, and if you check out the wonderful "Ashes Are Burning", you might just recognise who is playing the brilliant guitar solo at the climax!

If you want to hear more obvious dual guitars from Wishbone Ash checkout two songs that segue together off the same album "Argus" - Warrior then Throw down the Sword too incredible songs .

Ted Turner ( first slow part solo) played on John Lennons Imagine album. Andy Powell (faster solos) is still touring the band, and has always played a Flying V. Beautiful guitar sounds for the time, my favourite band of all time. So glad you played this and really enjoyed it.

At last!! I have been hoping you would do some Wishbone Ash, as "Argus" is my favourite album and has been since it came out in 1972. There is not a bad track on it, you really can't go wrong with any future picks. The other tracks on the album probably show off the dual lead guitar elements better. Thanks for this, very happy tonight!

Thank you so much for giving Argus and Wishbone Ash a chance. You won't regret it. Not blowing smoke up your 'arses' but your my favourite reaction couple. You're making me listen to stuff I'd forgotten how much I adored when they first came out. Keep up the brilliant work.

A great band, though this track wasn't the one to show off the duel lead of Andy Powell and Ted Turner that you mentioned. If anything it was the bass which took that sparring role, with some insane runs by Martin Turner. His bright upfront bass sound reminds me most of Pete Townsend, the bass really becoming as much a lead instrument as the other guitars. As for that chilled first section, the lead guitar sounded to me to be influenced by and more reminiscent of Peter Green's bluesy sound (Peter was the lead guitarist and singer of the original 1967 to 1970 line up of Fleetwood Mac), so smooth and melodic, check out 'Albatross', 'Black magic woman', 'Man of the world', or 'Oh well'. A band to check out that were influenced by Wishbone Ash are Thin Lizzy.

John Entwistle? Bass player for the Who? Townsend was the lead guitarist.

In spite of the hype Andy Powell got as the 'faster' lead guitarist in the group (and yes, he was/is an excellent guitarist), I still say Martin Turner was the "hero" of the band, with his up front contributions on the Bass AND his lead vocals. If he was just a 'normal' bass player at that time, Wishbone Ash would not have been as impressive to me as they were. I'm hoping that *Handy* from their debut album will be one of the next Wishbone Ash songs Nick&Lex review, as it shows off Martin's special talents in an extremely satisfying way...and then maybe *Phoenix.*

Great reaction. So glad you liked this. Boy are you facing another rabbit hole you are gonna just love !!! - The very 1st song I ever heard was on an album "Wishbone Four" called "Everybody Needs A Friend" the guitar solo made me cry. It's sooo beautiful and so are the lyrics. That was my intro to this group. In the same comments below, I mentioned the album "There's The Rub" - There is another track - called "F.U.B.B" & it's an instrumental. Two guitars playing the same notes with one an octave lower .... slowly building & building up until ---- It's a dual with each trying to out do the other. Brilliant track....Amazing album.

Regarding the two guitar solos, the album cover states that first was played by Ted Turner and the second by Andy Powell. Really, the whole Argus album is excellent.

Yeah, such a great song and such a distinctive sound. What made Wishbone Ash so distinctive, was the blues based duelling guitars, which were sometimes working together and sometimes working apart. But it's always edgy, and often melodic. Great tone on the guitars as well.

Wishbone Ash are still gigging but have split into two bands. Wishbone Ash and Martin Turner's Wishbone Ash. They used to be quite big in the seventies, playing large theatres in the UK and the U.S but both bands only play smaller venues now. If you want to see the best version (in my humble opinion) check out Martin Turner's version as he's the lead vocalist. Andy Powell is the other version. He leads on vocals but is also the guitar soloist the Sometime world

I too had never heard of Wishbone Ash until college…. My friend’s room mate was really into them. I have Argus and really enjoy the song you picked. I’ve heard a lot of their material, but from more of a party situation than actually sitting down and listening with album in hand. You’ve inspired me to jump back down the Wishbone Ash rabbit hole. I just started listening to a band called Crack The Sky last night at my buddied recommendation ….same story with them… I heard much of their material in a party situation… they have a killer bassist as well. Thanks again for all you do for us!
