Thank you for playing Rory Gallagher. Most people don't know who he is. He is one of the greatest Rock/Blues guitarists of all time. He's right there with Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Johnny Winter. He didn't play to make a ton of money, but because he loved performing for his fans in small venues. He was a fantastic showman and guitarist. He died about 15 or 20 yrs, ago. A great Irishman.

Rory Gallagher is hands down one of the top 10 guitarists of all time (and you really need to hear his live recordings to really appreciate his playing, especially this song live is much better). Lots of BIG rock bands at the time tried to get him to join them, but he always wanted to do his own thing. An Irish working class hero, he was always hard working and down to earth, and he really connected with his audience (from Cork, he was one of the few musicians from the south who could get away with playing in Northern Ireland during the troubles)

Totally agree! I grew up seeing Rory live in Manchester in the 70's, loved everything about how he played and his performances. Live in Europe was my go to album for a long time! I still play his music but nothing will replace the experience of seeing him live in my 6th form days!

The Rolling Stones was one of those bands, but, as they said themselves, he wouldn't have fitted in, wouldn't be able to take orders as he needed to be himself. So he was always his own boss.
@wewhofly
@wewhofly Ай бұрын
@@annereidy7981 How can a virtuoso ever take orders? From who? It's a rhetorical question, not attacking the messenger ;) When you listen to Rory, every song seems complete. He doesn't overcook and he doesn't underplay. He gives each song enough, and then ends. So it's not just that he knew every millimetre of his preferred instrument better than most (including all members of the Rolling Stones) he knew how to construct a 'guitar' song better than most. I don't know what the orders would be or who'd feel qualified to give them to him. MIck: "You're sleeping in room 78 tonight, Rory".

Oh boy. I get to share my Rory Gallagher story....again. So I went to see Deep Purple during their Machine Head tour in 1973 with Fleetwood Mac and opening, Rory Gallagher. I had never heard of Rory but by the time he was through, they were having to put a new roof on the building cause he blew the lid off the place. So out comes Fleetwood Mac. Not the Fleetwood Mac we all know today. Not even the Fleetwood Mac of Peter Green. This was the Bob Welsh FM and they were minus the late great Danny Kirwin. So no songs from Kiln House, no songs from Future Games, and no songs from Bare Trees. In otherwords, they sucked without a dynamic lead guitar player. We booed FM off stage and nearly rioted till Rory came out for a 3rd encore and removed the roof again!. That was my FIRST TIME REACTION to this absolute force of nature. Oh ya and Deep Purple was pretty good too.😅

He was a musician who wasn't interested in pop or rock status. Always true to himself, only wanted to play music. And he did that amazingly. Surely you must watch and listen to Tattoo'd Lady from the Irish Tour album on KZbin. It's legendary! Not for the show per se, in your own time. You'll see him in action. Soundwise, it's really satisfying.

You just discovered one of the best guitarist EVER. He is considered a national treasure in Ireland. He was a great rocker. Next song, go with 'Walk on Hot Coals' the Irish Tour album. Nick, I know you and Lex don't like blues, but listen to Rory's acoustic blues. He can play ANYTHING. Legend has it that when Jimi Hendrix was asked how does it feel to be the best guitarist in the world, he replied, "I don't know; ask Rory Gallagher." Google what other great guitarist say about Rory. But better yet, just listen to him. NO ONE is better than Rory, and you can count on one hand who is as good.

Both Brian May (Queen) & Slash (Velvet Revolver, Guns & Roses) credit Rory with their playing. Alex Lifeson (Rush) was a personal friend of his having been the opening act for Rory early in Rush's career, then with Rory as the opening act for Rush a decade or so later. Everyone that ever came in contact will tell you how humble he was, though he had magnificent chops. Please treat yourself to more Rory. Record companies tried to make him a guitar hero (first with "Taste" & then solo) but Rory always refused to be swayed. He loved playing smaller venues instead of stadiums because being close to the audience drove him as a performer, he was high energy on stage, laidback off stage. I got the chance to see him once & it was a great concert.

My goodness, you've struck gold here! But please react to one of his live performances, Calling Card, Secret Agent or maybe Bullfrog Blues?. He didn't like the studio much, he lived for playing live to audiences and he was sensational. Master of acoustic/electric blues/rock and supreme slide playing. He used to use a Vox AC30 amplifier on a chair mic'd up and is the sole reason Brian May to this day uses the same configuration albeit beefed up to multiple AC30s for stadium playing. Brian when very young met Rory backstage at a concert and was inspired and amazed how he took the time to chat and encourage him and his friends. Rory, a great soul and talent lost way too soon. RIP.

Its one of the rare times where a great musician didn't aim for fame and fortune and played for the love of his music. I was lucky enough to see him perform many times at the Greyhound, Croydon England during the early 70s, he was really in his element at a small (pub) venue... Cheers Bob...

Few could touch his fast unique, tasty fills before EVH came along. There are many audience recordings too, all are amazing. To add influences- both KK Downing and Glen Tipton of Judas Priest mentioned his influence for his pinch harmonics as well as others mentioned above. Hybrid picking: pick + fingers is what you were referring to.

A Million Miles Away and only a single flavour of it. He plays it with quite a few flavours. All the flavours have a strong seagull vibe, and it surprises me that people don't pick up on that more. He's singing about seascape loneliness, ports, shorelines, harbour bars you feel lonely in. In some versions he gets to the haunting crying sound of gulls out to sea. In this version he seems to choose gulls in urban spaces, just bickering with each other over thrown away food..., pecking and yelping at each other. It is sublime that he's choosing how to depict his surroundings in different moods.

Thanks for doing RG! The pride of Ireland. Nick was partially correct about airplay. This did get airplay on FM stations in the 70s but I don't think I would describe it as a hit single. The album itself in all likelihood probably charted better in Europe than in the US. I think RG was a brilliant guitarist and an even more exceptionally talented performer. When the show was over RG left it all out on the staged except of course when he encored and left a some more. He NEVER just phoned it in. Irish Tour videos would be a good place to start for that perspective. RG was such an unassuming artist. Almost always played dressed in jeans and a flannel shirt and playing a beat up well played guitar that he seemed to be born with. My favorite RG album has always been "Calling Card." I think it really holds up well through time. You mentioned Gary Moore and the song Still Got the Blues For You but have you seen the video with the extended solo live. It has got about a zillion views. If you explore more blues based music than make sure to check out Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac "Then Play On" album. In addition to SRV it would be great to see check out Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton (The Humbler) Also for acoustic please consider Michael Hedges and Tommy Emmanuel. Hedges was a rare talent and practically created the percussive acoustic guitar genre.

On the Mike Douglas Show when Hendrix had become the toast of the town. Douglas asked Hendrix: “What’s it was like to be the best rock guitarist in the world?” Jimi then beautifully responded, “I don’t know, you’ll have to ask Rory Gallagher”.

Rory Gallagher started playing professionally at age 15 in Irish showbands that covered hits of the day. He formed the band Taste in 1966 which became a tremendous hit in Europe in late 60s. Watch their performance at Isle of Wight 1970, esp "Sugar Mama". It's killer rock! I saw him once here in USA 1972 at outdoor rock festival. I will never forget him. A musical genius & a humble kind man. Thanks for this post.

Very cool! First time hearing a Rory studio track. I discovered him a few years back myself. I do know he’s a legend in Ireland. I had read that Rory didn’t care about changing anything about his music in order to become rich and famous. Very distinct style and he is revered by many famous guitarists as a huge influence. Slash and Joe Bonamassa to name a couple.

@Gravity King Brian May of Queen also credits Rory Gallagher for his sound. He talks about him in a YT video. He used to follow him around as a young man & when he finally met him he asked him how he came up with the special sound he pulled out of his guitar & Rory graciously told him.

Rory maybe is unknown to a lot of people but his influence is widespread. Guitarists like Brian May, Johnny Marr, The Edge and Alex Lifeson consider him an influence. His energy and style make Rory a must listen too. He never released a single just albums.

Rory was a mindblowing guitarist, period. He might even change your idea of blues (or blues rock), I don't know -- but he did some amazing acoustic things, some amazing slide things, and some flat out burning rock, too. His record "Top Priority" leans more on the rock side. Check out the "coral guitar" (which is basically an electric guitar set up to sound sitar-ish) on the song "Philby". (A bit of trivia: it was Pete Townshend's instrument he borrowed to play on that song).

Rory's band "Taste" were very highly rated in the late 60's, and played at the famous Isle of Wight festival. Jimi Hendrix allegedly said, when asked how it felt to be the best guitarist in the world, said "I don't know man, go ask Rory Gallagher" (although this story may be apocryphal, as it is also told about Billy Gibbons, Terry Kath and Phil Keaggy). He was an astonishing acoustic and electric blues player, and a brilliant live act for many years. The Rolling Stones are supposed to have wanted him to replace Mick Taylor when he left in 1974, but he turned them down and they got Ronnie Wood instead. Joe Bonnamassa, Slash, Brian May and Alex Lifeson all quote him as an influence. He also collaborated with Muddy Waters and Albert King

Alex Lifeson of RUSH credits Rory with teaching him PICK HARMONICS while they were on tour together in the early 80's. RUSH opened for Rory in 1974 when he played in Canada. Then, years later, Rory opened for RUSH. 1982 I think it was. I saw that concert and tour. If you search on you tube for Alex Lifeson talks Rory Gallagher or Slash interview about Rory Gallagher or Brian May interview on Rory Gallagher you will hear how he influenced may different guitarists. He was a guitar god taken to early in life. I would suggest you look for these songs on youtube by Rory for a different sound from him. " Off the Handle (Montreux 1979) " " Do You Read Me (Rock goes to College, 1979) "

Rory Gallagher is one of the great (unsung) guitar heroes. His 'Irish Tour'-album is legendary (at least if you have a faint interest in blues-rock). So if you enjoy Gary Moore etc., I urge you to listen to the opener of the 'Irish Tour' -album called "Cradle Rock", it's quite different from B.B.King's sweet blues guitar sound...

I am glad you like Rory, but if you haven't already, you REALLY NEED to listen to this song from Irish Tour '74. Rory wakes up and comes alive during live routines, and Irish Tour '74 is as good as a live album gets. Also, on the Tour album the accompaniment is incredible, with every instrument getting a chance to wow.
