I have said this many times. I lost my wife suddenly and tragically several years ago, and in those early days, sitting at a bar eating dinner alone, this song described exactly how I felt. I was a million miles away at the same time watching other people having a good time and i was wondering how can they be so happy while my world is so empty. It is as if Rory wrote this song for me all those years ago. Thanks so much for doing this song. The live version off the Irish Tour 74' album is epic. Rory was much better live than in the studio.

Delighted to hear Rory here. He was regarded as one of the greatest blues guitists of the era and was born 8 miles from my home town in Donegal. Fabulous! So glad you finally got to Rory. Rory was the songwriter, the vocalist and the guitarist. This song is actually about depression-Rory suffered from it most of his life. Its about being disconnected from the world around you as it flows around you, recognizing that you are on the outside looking in. He was an amazing artist who poured his heart into every piece he played. As others have mentioned, you need to review him in a live performance, because he came alive on a stage in a way few performers do. The 1979 Shadow Play is an example of his energy in a live performance, but since this was an encore at the end of a performance, not the best vocals by that point of the show. The 1979 Rock Goes to College has great performances-Do You Read Me is excellent and shows off a few of his mad guitar skills.

l saw Rory a few times in the early 70s and he's one of the few electric guitarists who is as good on acoustic guitar as electric. So many of the people named as great guitarists are very good as acoustic players which makes me question the genius of so many of the supposed greats. For me the best of all is Richard Thompson, but Rory is hot on his heels.

I always related to this song on tour just like "Turn the Page". The feelings are real at the end of the night after the show is done. You go back to your hotel room and you're a million miles from YOUR bed. The road is a blast, but it can be a very lonely place when you aren't distracted. Those drives are something else. PLEASE do his Shadow Play live in '79! I'm SO GLAD you finally found Rory!!! Huge influence on my playing! Learn "Bad Penny" as a great lesson! Love y'all!

I'd heard "OF" Rory Gallagher early in my days (19 or 20) because Vivian Campbell (Dio's guitarist) mentioned him in a guitar instructional video. It wasn't until I was in my 40's until I actually heard him play though. I had run across a copy of "The Irish Tour" film and decided to get some blues "culture". I was blown away! If you two have a couple hours someday you should watch that video; not only does it have some amazing live performances but there's a lot of cool backstage and Irish cultural material there, including some sad scenes that reflect "The troubles" that Northern Ireland went through, with barbed wire barricades sometimes visible and a truck of armed British soldiers driving by at one point. Rory was one of the few performers that would play in N. Ireland at the time, due to the danger. Rory is famous for being a "blues" man but if you dig into his catalog, you'll find out that there's not many musical styles that he didn't try his hand at; Rock, blues, country, folk, pop, metal ("Moonchild" is metal as f**k) he even did a song called "Signals" that borders on New Wave/Post Punk.
@jamesyoung75602 жыл бұрын

The greatest complement to have been given this mans skill was to have Jimmy Hendrix pay deference to Rory's playing. The live version adds another layer to A Million Miles Away a true blues classic. Needing and wanting to join into the cheerful environment that surrounds you, but the unexplainable blues you grapple with prevents this.
