Yes, that is right, later they got a lot of issues, with ending go on without Johnston and with Michael McDonald as the new lead, it was great but never more the "old" Doobies, but later he came back and today, being old, they performe and join the stage all together playing all those old songs and hits, so finally they made it !!! Great band !!

Yup, Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons were the key vocals and everyone else sang behind them. Awesome knowing younger people are discovering what music we had, that moved us so deeply! The Doobies were two completely separate iterations. Both brilliant. Only saw the first set, once with Tom Johnston and once without and before Michael McDonald. The original group were the historic and iconic best! But the MMcD iteration was good too.

As a 16-17 yo young man I worked at a Howard Johnson's motel/bar/restaurant as a dish washer. On the weekends (Fri-Sat) I would work midnight shift and would have to vac the bar after it closed and on occasion I would find change on the floor and immediately head to the juke box to play Jesus is Just Allright and Listen To The Music and crank it so I could hear it over the vac.....being stoned I would forget to turn it down when I was done .....got yelled at more than once.....

Both incarnations ARE the Doobie Brothers. All the fabulous musicians who played for and made the Doobies music deserve equal acclaim for being the world class and loved around the world music out hey were and are. Knowing them from their start, I’m aware of the original members, but still appreciate the newer Doob’s as I learn them. My favorite new Doob was Mr. Corny Bumpus. RIP Corny. I do believe the original iteration of the Band is the best. But I still love all their music. Tiran Porter was world class bassist before he played one Doobie note! RIP Tiran Porter! Boy how time flies!!!

Great review and analysis. You can now appreciate where some of us are coming from when we say we love the early Doobie Brothers best. The album Toulouse Street was a favorite of mine. The song Listen to the Music started it for them. When Michael came along the soul of the original band died. They became a pop band. I saw them 4 times in concert.

Take Me In Your Arms.. is a Motown song written by Holland, Dozier and Holland. Hopefully you know who they are by now. :) It was originally done by Kim Weston, who did some duets with Marvin Gaye back in the 60's.

Tom Johnston had a health and drug problem and left to get well. Jeff Skunk Baxter who was an original member of Steely Dan and left to join the Doobies when Steely Dan stop touring. He had played on a couple Doobie records before that. After Tom left he recommended Michael McDonald and the rest is history.

One of the things missing from services like Spotify and Wikipedia is album liner notes. There’s nothing like listening to a song and having a physical album in one’s hands to be able to access all the info, like who’s playing and singing. Trying to keep up with all the personnel changes with a band that’s been around for as long as the Doobies is a near impossible task without that supplementary material. Even a resource like Wikipedia sometimes gets it wrong or incomplete. BTW, if you want to hear the turning point in their sound, check out “Takin’ It To the Streets” (the song from the album of the same name). The album itself is kinda half Tom Johnston and half Michael McDonald. The title track has elements of their ‘pre’ and ‘post’ sound.

Really enjoyed this! Saw this band in college, never saw the next incarnation with MM. They really stretched out when they were live- it felt like a big party. Michael didn't join until Livin' on the Fault Line. I love the drumming on "Daughters of the Sea" and the marimba in the middle. Nick, when you play that song for Alexia, go ahead and play the next one, "Flying Cloud", a beautiful instrumental that closes the album, as the former bleeds into the latter anyway. As a listener with muso friends, in australia we hear music from everywhere. The musos hear new stuff and try to add to their capabilities. We all look for different stuff over time. How many times have we heard the established musos have been told, "You have to keep evolving with the times, or you are done." Doobie Brothers have been back active for years with their original lead singer Tom Johnson . The hired Michael McDonald in an emergency when Tom Johnson had health problems. After a few years they were burned out and broke up. Then in the late 80's they reformed with their original lead singer. They did recently have Michael McDonald some some songs with them.

Nick, The Doobie Brothers were commercially successful before Michael McDonald came along. Long Train Runnin' and Jesus Is Just Alright got airplay as did several of there other songs--such as Another Park Another Sunday, Black Water and China Grove. Also, regarding complex music not selling, it actually did sell very well for a time in the early to mid 70s. Jethro Tull had their highest charting album with Thick As A Brick. It topped the Billboard charts in 1972. An Yes and ELP were moving albums and hitting the top 10 also. It changed around the time that disco arose starting around 1975/1976.

Doobie Brothers are a Band out of San José, CA. (S.F. Bay Area). Original Lead Singer/1st Lead Guitar was/is Tom Johnston. He got an Gastrointestinal illness and could no longer go on so they asked Michael McDonald. Doobies, Skunk Baxter lead Guitar, ( who had played with Steely Dan along with Michael McDonald) asked him to step in and that was their 2nd Incarnation. Thanks Nick & Gray Beard, love early Doobie's, their best music. I have all the early albums & a greatest hits volume two with Michael McDonald. Here's the the line up for the early years Nick. Tom Johnson - vocals & guitar, Pat Simmons - vocals & guitar, Tiran Porter - bass & vocals, John Hartman - drums & percussion, Michael Hossack - drums. Tom Johnson & Pat Simmons both wrote, sang lead vocals, played harmonica & played leads with Johnson doing the majority, Simmons also played banjo. I grew up on the early Doobie's & was really disappointed with the direction Michael McDonald took them. And as far as hits & radio play & making money. They had a greatest hits album before McDonald even joined the band. They was hugely successful before he even joined. Also Nick, guitarist Jeff Skunk Baxter joined the for the Stampede album. Skunk played with Steely Dan & he suggested McDonald come join the band. But great marathon Nick.

So great seeing you appreciate these bands as i did back in the day. Though i am a drummer and much older, i grew up w/ these albums. i too enjoy the earlier Doobie albums; though i like the Michael McDonald albums as well, at least thru the Minute By Minute album. An observation you made is similar to my own and this applies not only to the Doobies, but bands like Jethro Tull, Kansas, Steely Dan and the like. I always prefer the "not so" commercial tracks. In my vinyl days, i would play the side less heard, for the most part anyway. Some great tracks here, but for your ears as it were, there are tracks you would enjoy more, kind like the Daughters of the Sea track. A few to check out: I Cheat the Hangman; Wheels of Fortune; Clear As the Driven Snow; Livin' on the Fault Line; Disciple; Chinatown; How Do the Fools Survive....really check them all out. Some deep Kansas tracks too and don't forget to circle back to Rush, of whom you could do many marathons.

Vocals 1. Jesus is Just Alright with Me - Tom Johnston lead with Patrick Simmons and Tiran Porter backing and Patrick Simmons middle preaching section "Jesus. He's My Brother..." 2. Long Train Runnin' - Tom Johnston 3. The Captain and Me - Tom Johnston 4. Song to See You Trough - Tom Johnston 5. Daughter of the Sea - Patrick Simmons 6. Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me a Little While) - Tom Johnston MM started singing on 'Takin' it to the Streets', but Tom Johnston was also on that album. Johnston and Simmons and McDonald and Porter all sing lead on different songs on this album. They ALWAYS had a variety of singers with Tom Johnston singing most of the songs in the early days, but not all of the songs. Pat Simmons sang quite a bit of lead vocals, especially Black Water comes to mind as being different from the usual DB sound even back then when Johnston was around. It isn't as cut and dry as some here have been telling you. If you go only by the hits, then MM really changed them, but if you go by ALL the songs on the albums, their sound is NOT ENTIRELY changed as the MM haters lead you to believe. Many casual DB 'hit' listeners make this conclusion, but it is not entirely true. Also, it's the radio stations that decide what to play on the radio. That isn't MM's fault. The next album is 'Livin' on The Fault Line' and has songs sung by McDonald, Simmons and Porter. Tom Johnston is not on this album. But again, there is a variety of different lead singers. The Minute by Minute album is next and has songs sung by MM and PS as well as Nicolette Larson guest singing backing vocals on 'Sweet Feelin'' Minute by Minute is probably the album where the DB sound changed the most as MM was really dominating by this time. On the last of the 'classic' DB albums before the Farewell Tour on 'One Step Closer' Michael McDonald sang lead, Pat Simmons sang lead and new member on Sax, Cornelius Bumpus sang lead on one track. Just a note here Nick: Cornelius Bumpus is on Fagen's Kamakiriad album. So Nick, a lot of this is hype from haters and casual listeners. MM was invited to fill a void caused by Tom Johnston's health issues. Without McDonald the DB would probably have ended or faded into oblivion without someone of similar ability to replace/sub for Tom Johnston. That's a plain and simple fact. I saw the DBs for their Farewell Tour at the Spectrum in Philly on August 6, 1982 and they were great. They did the MM songs and a lot of old songs that TJ wrote and sang. Like Chicago, DBs had a variety of singers. And like Chicago the fans blame one person on a change of their sound which is a bit silly. Even Chicago still had other singers than Peter Cetera and they still did songs with horns. It was the radio stations that decided they wouldn't play Chicago songs with horns. That wasn't the fault of Peter Cetera. Music was changing when MM was in the DBs and the Radio stations made those songs popular. That isn't MM's fault. He pretty much saved the DBs and Skunk Baxter is to thank for that. Skunk also played in the actual Steely Dan Band before SD became a nucleus of Fagen and Becker and session musicians. In a nutshell I'm simply saying that things are not as simple as many have told you.

Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons handled the lead vocals in the early years. When Tom left, that is when Michael McDonald came in. He isn't on any of these songs. Michael's first album with the Doobies was Takin' It To The Streets from 1976. This is the pre-McDonald era.

Love the Doobies…both versions. There is a documentary about them that covers both versions. Jeff”Skunk” Baxter guitar player, joined the band after playing in Steely Dan and when the lead singer of the Doobies had to quit due to health reasons, Jeff suggested a singer he knew named Michael McDonald. And that is when everyone quickly figured out Michael could write songs also. Michael McDonald is a great singer but he is an amazing keyboard/piano player too.

The Captain and Me was (and is) one of my favorite albums, I bought it when I was in high school because of the album cover (post apocalyptic). It's one of those rare albums where every song is great and should be listened to from beginning to end. I love your show, go Stranger Things.

Doobie Brothers are the only band to have 3 members allowed to record and/or perform with Steely Dan. Who only allowed the world's best to play with them. An unparalleled achievement. I may be one of the few who liked what the Doobies did both before, and with Michael Mcdonald, aka The Voice. P.S. Frey said that the Eagles worked hard to make money. I think the Doobies did what they did because they loved the music. And it shows. We're all thinking of Alexia, please let her know that we are thinking of her. You are an unstoppable duo.

As others have said, Tom Johnston had to leave The Doobie Brothers in 1975 right before the tour for Stampede due to medical issues. Michael McDonald was recruited as an emergency replacement, but was retained as permanent replacement until the band took a 5-year hiatus in 1882. Tom Johnston returned to The Doobie Brothers in 1976, a year after needing to leave for medical reasons, but was unhappy with the more pop oriented sound under McDonald and left to do a solo career. He returned for what was billed as a farewell tour in 1982. The Doobie Brothers reunited for a brief tour in 1987. Johnston joined them, but I believe McDonald was still doing well in his solo career. Without McDonald, the band has ventured somewhat back to their original sound, and permanently reformed. Check out The Doctor, released in 1989, to get a feel for the sound of the reformed band. As has been said, The Doobie Brothers are doing a 50th anniversary tour. Michael McDonald is touring with them, at least on most of the dates. But I believe they're featuring music from all eras of the band. I don't see upcoming dates in Colorado; they may have already played there. But they do have a show scheduled in Phoenix, AZ on October 4th, as well as several shows in Texas. They'll be here at the Washington State Fair in September.

Although I was a fan of the DB before college, I always remember hearing their songs playing on a killer homemade stereo system that a friend had in his room. He and his brother who were roommates designed and built it from parts. One of the guys was an electrical engineering technician student and the other was an electrical engineering student. So they created the circuit boards and build the 750 watt per channel amplifier, preamplifier, and a pair of huge 3-way speakers with double 15" woofers with acoustically tuned baffle chambers. They called the speakers DB-1s, as in Damned Big Ones. Since I had worked in a hi-fi store in HS and college I knew a lot about stereo equipment I was focused on the specs of their system which amazed me as much as the fact that they built it from scratch and it sounded amazing. Anyway, during the summer the brothers worked as interns for RCA where most of the LP records in the US at that time were pressed and after building the speakers and showing them off to their bosses, they build four of them (a quadrophonic set up) for a listening room at work. So, listening to the DBs in their dorm room was almost like hearing the record playing in a studio listening room.

Quad was great, don't know why they stopped doing it. I bought a quad 8 track tape to play in my Dad's car, which had a GM Quad sound system. A very good sound.

@@alanparsonsfan There were two standards SQ/QS and CD4. Both required extra speakers. SQ/QS was something Sony and Sansui were pushing. JVC and RCA were pushing CD4. SQ/QS had channel bleedtrhough but CD4 allowed for four completely discrete channels so you could set an instrument to have its own channel if you wanted. But in most mixes there were multiple instruments per channel but the spatial positioning and separation with CD4 was better. SQ/QS could synthesize 4 channels from a stereo record, though the effect was so slight that it didn't do much to enhance the sound. SQ/QS required a decoder while CD-4 required a demondulator, comparable to how channels are broken out of a carrier wave on a radio signal. And the extra channels were encoded on a record at a higher frequency above 40khz and that required a much thinner, sharper stylus on a turntable that could capture the information on the grooves without destroying it by wearing out the groove as a normal stylus would. SO CD-4 required a lot of extra, expensive equipment which doomed it from ever being widely commercial, even though it was technically the better format. By the end of the 70s some companies had started creating digital time delays that could create selectable concert hall effects for any home stereo with a relatively cheap set of back channel speakers, which was the forerunner of the multiple channel systems we have today. By then Quad was mostly forgotten. And when Music CDs appeared in the 80s LPs faded in popularity as did prerecorded tapes. Something like the CD4 tech would work with today's digital track recordings but the multi-channel formats for surround sound do the same thing with more information on the disc of the digital file.

The Doobie Brothers were really a folk rock band with an edge for the first 5 albums. Influenced by the Allman Bros, they also brought in elements of blues and country. Tom Johnson was their lead vocalist, guitarist and writer in this period, but had to retire due to ulcers developed during continuous touring which is when Michael was asked to join. But other than the change of Tommy to Michael, the rest of the band remained the same for the next 3 albums.

A number of bands have a before/after version of the band but continued on under the same (or sometimes a slightly different) name. Often the most noticeable difference is the shift to a more commercial sound. Examples include Peter Gabriel/Phil Collins Genesis, Jefferson Airplane/Starship, Terry Kath/Peter Cetera Chicago, pre/post Buckingham/Nicks Fleetwood Mac, and of course the Doobies.

These songs remind me of Chicago and The Eagles......all on the radio 24/7 in the '70s! Especially the song, Feeling Stronger Every Day, by Chicago......summer of '73. If you watch old videos you can see the dynamic of the early band. Wiki credits Johnston as lead but I don't hear it that way....Patrick Simmons sang lead too.
