This sort of thing is how I've always felt Diesel's transition to less evil, as well as the acquisition of Sydney and Paxton, should have been handled. Class 08s are fairly popular for preservationists because they make good utility engines, so it isn't unreasonable for the fat controller to purchase some when they started to be withdrawn, and there's nothing like the withdrawal of your class to stop you feelin better than everyone else. I know the show was too kid focused at that point, but I would have liked to see something, maybe with Sydney and Paxton telling Diesel how their class was scrapped, Diesel talking to 'Arry and Bert, who would be sobered and confirm that scrapped class 08s had been delivered to their smelter's, and causing the three to repent and try to become better, actually empathizing with the steam engines.

Another thing about this video that I like , remember how d199 and d261 When they first came to sodor they thought they were the future and modern and that they would be like that forever, yet during early to mid 1980s while they were bright next to each other when that class 68 diesel passed them with the express train, I could see in d199's face how sad he was because he thought he was the future and then later on 20 years later a more modern and efficient diesel took over his work, same with d261, except d261 looked very angry because since his type (class 40's) were used on express services for ones but were replaced by that class 68...

An idea for a story I had once was something based on the various interviews done for documentaries done in the 80s. The interviewee is a scrapman who was part of the process of en mass scrapping steam locomotives. He starts the interview at first talking about being glad for work in the lean times after the war, as he came back from Europe. And then he starts talking about having to cut up living beings, scared and crying. He breaks down about it, crying profusely for several minutes before finding the strength to continue the tale, about the result once an engine dies. And how few of his mates are still around, succumbing to their nightmares. As horrifying as scrapping is from an engine’s perspective, think of how awful it has to be for the person doing the scrapping. Most of us aren’t psychopaths who want to cut up others, and when the machine can talk back to you, show fear at its fate, it can’t do wonderful things to the psyche.
@Theonea883 Жыл бұрын
I always how people of that world are... okay with that, the looks of fear, the saddest in there eyes, but worse of all the... screaming dear gosh the screaming, them begging the cutters to stop, but them not caring at all just seeing them as tools to use and for them to be thrown out, like they don't.. have life, gosh when shed 17 showed that scene of Henry screaming and getting chopped up, it's all so wrong.

Ik it would have been pretty hard to do but when he just steamed away from Diesel and the other diesel (Paxton but I presume from the story it was just a different diesel) it made my eyes widen a bit that he didn’t try to save them or even at least diesel. That’s a pretty rotten way for diesel to go from his past life on Sodor
@phattrel60233 жыл бұрын
Because it might have been different then, this story takes place during the early 1980's , diesel locos on the other railway had something called "TOPS" numbering system, it was basically a system that told the computer at British rails controls office where a diesel loco was and when it came and other things, (basically like having a microchip inside a human and tracking the humans every move and etc) plus even if James wanted to do that, It probably wouldn't have been like Douglas and Oliver, someone might have seen them and probably either flag them down to stop them or contact control or the authorities, yet again I could be wrong, but this is my opinion on the subject
@pizzaplanettruck97612 жыл бұрын
@@phattrel6023 The TOPS microchip or whatever might not have been functional in these diesels anymore so that might not have been a threat. And in the Railway Series, that foreman was only able to briefly stop Douglas in time because a diesel saw them and alerted him.

I feel so sorry for those 08s, they may be old but they still worked so well for their age, but they were forced out of work by new regulations and techniques that meant they weren't needed. Those diesles thought they would have long and prosperous lives but only a few decades later they were simply cast aside and thrown out like trash. I know in real life they didn't feel sad or feelings at all, but here I can imagine those 08s felt so sad, alone and worthless. They definitely didn't deserve to be scrapped, not even Diesel, he may not have been a friendly engine but not even he deserved to be cut up and thrown aside like trash. If I could have done I would have taken in those engines and looked after them. I just hope those engines, or at least some of them were saved and restored like Oliver was.

@privateerbouncher96223 жыл бұрын
Most disturbing is the fact that Diesel is being scrapped. Sadly he wasn't marked for preservation on Sodor in your universe, which actually feels realistic. While 08's are still in use, most of them have been scrapped years ago. What "Paxton" said reminded me of ShunterProductions "The Spectres Warning" where the ol rusted spirit of a steam engine tells Bert that "Time will go on, and you will be replaced" Idk much about UK and their shunters. But for Denmark it is perfectly true, shunters from 1950s and 1960's were replaced with newer and stronger shunters in 1990's. Yet most of them were scrapped due to stations becoming smaller due to the preference of lorries thus no longer needed for tracks to store the freight wagons, and of course it means no need of a shunter. And even the new ones from late 1990's has been sold to Germany due to still lesser fright carried by rail.

The story of obsolescence basically. The demand for higher speed, greater power, creature comforts sometimes becomes too great for some older designs. I should know this because my car (a Honda Civic I named Senna) is getting up there in age (almost 14 years). Performance has been obsolete ever since the 1960s but in terms of economy, cars are only just now becoming superior to Senna. Combine that with the fact electric cars are making internal combustion obsolete and emissions regulations become ever tougher.
