give them more light, my grow in store bought soil (as is, no perlite or anything added) and they are perfectly fine and grow like weeds.

the biggest thing about calatheas is that they hate city water.. use rain water if you can or water out of a pond or other natural source

@@saltydawg5489 So that must be the key! I had a Calathea “Dottie” that I always watered with r/o water, but I could NOT make that thing happy! Her leaves always had brown edges. I tried moving her to different areas including higher humidity (never any direct sun), but nothing worked. I swore I would never have another one☹️ I do love them, though!

I have a Hoya Gracilis in a plastic pot and I water it once in 12-14 days. I used to water it sooner than that in the beginning and lost some leaves. She's super happy on an east-side window sill and after less than 1 year since I bought it, started growing like crazy and even flowered. In love.

I'm going to give this watering amount a try. Well closer too as mine also lost leaves . It's got something just popping through the soil now but that's taken ages. Thanks for writing the comment.

A little surprised but glad to learn Hoya roots are sort of epiphytic, and need such an airy, pebbly soil mix...maybe because the leaves are thick and tough I assumed they would like heavy packed potting soil. (??) Thankfully I don’t have any right now! 🌿🌱🦃

I love coconut coir! I am by the bricks, Menards sells Burpee’s organic and you reconstitute them with water. It’s fun and relaxing. Very satisfying. I make my own mixture I have coconut coir at the ready and I add 50% Coco coir and 50% total of perlite and orchid bark.I throw some worm castings in also.

Nick I love your channel. Quick question, what type of soil do I use for my monstera plants. It seems like once I take the plant out of the nursery soil it stops thriving as it was in the nursery soil. I use pots with drainage and i had a monstera soil mix but they don't do well. Any advice??? Help.

love your videos, and I love hoyas.. I just wanted to say that they will tell you when its time to water.. they get what i call a fingernail along the edge of the leaf when its time to water.. so feel your leaf if it is full and round edged then leave it alone its full of water but if the leaf is thinner and has that fingernail along the edge then water it all the way to the bottom of the pot and then leave it alone until it tells you once again that it wants water

Gently force it off the wall. It's strong enough to chip paint/plaster but can be removed, or just tackle it with a spatula. Better to damage air roots than snap the vine I guess. Then again you could just prop it if it does break.

Is a hoya the same as a hosta? I have just bought a British hosta which is growing more stalks leaves on one side.i have tuned the barer side to the light but is there anything else I can do? It's in the growers pot still and it looks like plain compost. No bits just smooth.

Do they grow without humidity? I noticed when I put mine in my greenhouse they started growing so much they were climbing all over the greenhouse but they took up too much space so I took them out and then they stopped growing completely and haven't made so much as one new leaf in months! I can't remember what kinds they are, I know one is carnosa and the other two look similar but I remember the picture had yellow flowers not pink.

@Nick, I am having an ongoing problem with my gorgeous monstera.. I have 3 leaves, bigger then my hand. But, anytime a new shoot begins, it gets stuck. The new growth will not separate or open. They basically die in that stuck position. I adore this dear plant. It is gorgeous, otherwise healthy, in leca. Now, someone told me this was a humidity issue. So, I increased my humidity! Still no luck. I'm going crazy and have no idea how to fix this issue. Any advice would be very much appreciated. I realize this is a hoya video, so forgive me. All my Hoya's are very happy. Perhaps a video on this issue? Maybe others have this problem too.

I don't know how hoya survives in those hanging baskets at the big box stores. When I bring it home they don't do well. The baskets are too big and deep. The hoya I have that's growing well are in pots much smaller and in an aroid type mix much like what you used. They can take a lil neglect and often do well when I don't fuss with them.

honestly you can grow any plant in the pot with no drainage holes if you're very careful about watering. I used to grow all cacti in regular, store bought soil in pots with no drainage and as long as they get plenty of sun and only get watered when needed (you will see a cactus shrink a bit) they grew beautifully and flowered every year. Sun is the most important, they will adapt to other factors. The only real issue with no drainage is mineral build up, but if you repot your cactus every 1-3 years they will be fine. But they need direct sun for several hours a day.

Katie, I've heard you can place a layer of rocks, then a thin layer of horticultural charcoal over that, before your potting mix. But I do agree with the poster saying you can plant in anything as long as you water only when needed and it has the light it needs. Best of luck with the new boob planter!

Also what is a epithitic plant? You said the word but i dont think i got it correct.
@dianal3827
@dianal3827 Жыл бұрын
Epiphytic is the word you're looking for. It refers to epiphytes, which are plants that grow on other plants for support, but do not take nutrients from the host plant. Many house plants are epiphytes, including monstera, epipremnum, some philodendron, some orchids (phalaenopsis, for example), ivy, tillandsia, brolemiad, etc. Do not confuse epiphytes for parasites. Parasitic plants get their nutrients from the host plant. One example is the mistletoe (prefers to grow on oak trees and can kill them).
