80's reference explained for the millennials & zoomers: 1. Chandler's goofy haircut is a near-perfect recreation of the haircut of the lead singer of Flock of Seagulls, a one-hit wonder new wave band from the 80s. 2. Chandler and Ross's outfits from the second flashback are based on the style popularized by Don Johnson on the show Miami Vice.

I love that Chandler and Monicas relationship is based on the fact they were Very Close friends for so long. When you look back at the early episodes there was a closer more comfortable friendship between the 2 of them. And I feel that the romantic relationship is stronger because of that. So it is perfect that the "I Love you" comes in a silly friendship moment, rather than some romantic candlelight moment or some sex moment. If you can fall in love with your best friend it's incredible. Now if Chandler just doesn't screw it up with his commitmentphobia.

I think your making note of Chandler’s “I love you!”, which is importantly prefaced by “You’re so great” can be translated as “You’ve always made me happy; I really love you”. Because the “you’re so great” remark is not about the dancing turkey head bit, it’s about ALL the great times he had with her throughout the years.

David Schwimmer recently stated a few days ago that this particular Thanksgiving episode - with their '80's 'Miami Vice' outfit in the flashback - was his favorite moment with the late Matthew Perry.

I love the Thanksgiving flashbacks. And I love Chandler & Monica (aka Mondler). The "I love you" that came out of nowhere was so sweet and natural. And yes, I think a big reason for Monica becoming a chef was because of Chandler. Fun facts relating to our beloved Matthew: Chandler bouncing up in the air when Monica sits on the couch in the flashback was suggested by Matthew. Chandler's toe being severed was a play on the fact that Matthew was missing part of his right middle finger. Matthew grew a goatee specifically for the scene where Joey scared him with the turkey. Also, Chandler's haircut during the first flashback at Ross and Monica's parents house resembles the style made popular by 1980s band A Flock of Seagulls. In the second flashback Ross and Chandler are wearing outfits inspired by the characters from Miami Vice. Joey getting the turkey stuck on his head is a reference a Mr. Bean episode called "Merry Christmas, Mr. Bean".
@nickreacts6394 Жыл бұрын
Talk about an amazing first "I love you". I mean, how can anyone not ship Chandler and Monica? Chandler's bounce and goatee were nice little touches, I'm not surprised that Matthew made great choices like that I swear his instincts and performance was always on point I just looked up "A Flock of Seagulls" and WOAH is that a bold hairstyle hahaha I can't imagine someone rocking that without a sense of irony about it. And I haven't seen any Mr. Bean aside from a couple clips online, I will have to react to at least the movies one day

@@nickreacts6394 if you recall - in the ep of Ross & Rachel's 1st date after the laughing incident, when Ross asks the guys the next day if any of them had experienced a girl laughing while kissing, Chandler replied yes but it was bc his "flock of seagulls" haircut was tickling her. Great continuity callback!

@@nickreacts6394 Yeah, there will be a few of those inconsistencies. But they're easy to accept (at least for me) since it's a good show and we can still enjoy it, and it isn't something they change willy nilly, but I'm pretty sure they realized it contradicted the earlier story, BUT it makes it fun enough that its worth it. If Rachel hadn't been there, they couldn't reveal the revenge idea.

Look up the band, A Flock of Seagulls. They were popular in the 80's, moreso cuz of the lead singers hair. Then the two suits with the rolled up sleeves is a reference to Miami Vice.

My personal favorite of all the Friends Thanksgiving Specials (and there are many great, iconic FriendsGiving events)! Nice timing for this one, even going chronological! The lore behind Chandler's hatred of the holiday expands! And Fat Monica is so adorably innocent and joyful. And technically the first Mondler "I love you?" Close enough. (My cousin texting my mom a gif of Monica Dancing with the Turkey / Fez Hat / Sunglasses last Thanksgiving is how said cousin learned that I'm a Friends Fanatic, and the reason why I have SO much Central Perk merch in my bedroom from every time said cousin goes thrift-shopping and keeps me in mind, lol.)

In primary school I had to hold a wire and another one of the class had to cut it. Instead of just cut it, he walked steps back, and then run at me, but in doing so instead of cut the wire he cut my finger. The teacher said: "That is nothing" but in reality I should have gone to the doctor to sew the open, deep wound. So: Still have the scar. But one think: They surely are a scholar and a teacher I will never forget, ahahahah!

The ONLY flaw with the near perfect thanksgiving episode is the retcon of Chandler and Rachel having met years before season 1 in such a significant and memorable way and then acting like they never knew each other. Also to be fair the expensive studio apartment in New York is probably more realistic than where they actually live lol

This is such a good point you make. We got to see flashbacks of all the characters and what they were like when they were younger, apart from Joey. Now I want to know what Joey was like when he was younger and why he often is more comfortable choosing sex over emotional intimacy. You would think that having a lot of sisters would make him knowledgeable about women and open to connecting with women's emotions. It seems like the writers just attributed all of Joey's superficial behaviours to lack of IQ or intelligence or something, which seems a little bit lazy and doesn't fully add up.

She “flirts” with him when they first meet (as well as any Geller can possibly flirt); she offers to make him the mac ‘n cheese; then she CHECKS in on him while he’s eating dessert and his off the cuff remark that she should be a chef she totally takes to heart! Yes, she became a chef because Chandler suggested it.
