I do NOT think Chandler was flirting. Mostly because we have seen Chandler flirt and he is horrendously awkward when he does. The pizza girl seems to know them because Joey and Chandler order pizza so much. I think he is just being friendly and his usual joking self. Chandler is quite charming when he's comfortable and making jokes so it could seem flirty, but I think it is just that he is with Monica and happy. Since he is happy he isn't nervous talking to a cute woman because he isn't interested in her.

This is further supported by the fact that when Rachel asked her if she didn't find it odd that they kept ordering so many pizzas she replied that she just assumed Joey was there so odering like 7 pizzas in a row wasn't strange at all.

I never saw it as flirting from Chandler, maybe that's just me? He was just being nice and funny. Chandler has never been good at flirting or dating so far in the show, but now that he's dating Monica? He has no need to flirt because he's in love with Monica so he can just be himself. That's how I've seen it all these years. Loved the reaction, can't wait to see it for the rest of the season :D

I don’t think Chandler was flirting with Caitlin. I think Chandler is super nervous when he flirts. He was super relaxed with the delivery lady and thus he wasn’t in his head over the interaction. Which suggests it’s innocent in his intent.

@@honeysuckledreamz Please elaborate. First she tells Ross it's his decision, then when he decides to call Emily, she aggressively pressures him into not calling. This type of bait-and-switching is not what I would expect a friend to do. If you say you're leaving the decision up to the person, then you follow through; you don't all of a sudden change your approach because you don't like the choice they made. That would be like a parent telling a child, "You can have either waffles or pancakes; what would you like?" and then, when the child picks waffles, saying "No, no, no, you should have pancakes!" and giving all kinds of reasons not to have waffles. Is that the kind of behavior you find okay?

I just took the "I did it again" line from Chandler to mean that once he heard this was the grandmother who does not speak english, he still tried to explain himself to her in english saying "I thought you were Joey's other grandmother". I hate that flirting is considered being friendly and cracking jokes. This is why service workers get harrassed, because creeps think we flirt with them. The intention is what makes the definition. If the intention is just to make another person feel good and welcome - not flirting. If the intention is to make them notice you so that you may persue a relationship of some kind - it is, and it is wrong If you are in a monogamous relationship. Reminds me also when I was studying a foreign language, and we finally went for a family vacation to that country, and I was just beaming the whole time there, ordering food in the language etc. After which my mum was like: "wooow, that was some major flirting, are you gonna do that with deserts too?" I was mortified.

i completely agree (no hate towards nick at all, i love him) but so many people can mistake being friendly with flirting which is why so many guys will ask a girl out who was just being nice and then get mad when they say no and say they were “leading them on” the toxicity which puts a barrier in between relationships and regular male-female friendships is what makes it so hard. the main characters in friends kiss each other on the cheek when they greet and say goodbye, thats just their way of expressing how glad they are to see them. but we dont see that as flirting. so many people might think what chandler did was considered flirting, i think its just because hes confident. when you have no romantic feelings towards someone you might be more confident in talking to them, and he is naturally charming and funny, but even tho some people say its flirting, its quite the opposite. its the shows way of telling us he is only interested in monica.

I totally agree. I feel this as a female engineer too. If I didn’t socialize and joke around with men then I would have no friends or career options. It’s so weird when people take this wrong … and super annoying when they imply I shouldn’t do those things bc it’s just another barrier in my career. Of course, I’m talking about that social stuff and not actual flirting! 😂 like, I would never bat my eyes or touch the knee of a coworker - gross lol.

Historical note: so often some lines go over one’s head and I know one does in particular in 5x19 while Ross is talking to Caitlyn about gas, Chandler says, “Oh, the humanity”. This is a callback to 2 instances in history: one, a reporting during an horrific air disaster and the other a take on that same disaster in a classic episode from “WKRP in Cincinnati”. In May 1937, the German hydrogen gas-filled “airliner” as it was called, The Hindenburg Zeppelin crashed at a New Jersey airstrip in a fiery disaster called the worst air disaster at the time. The radio reporter described the disaster in a tear-filled report, his voice breaking and sickened with sorrow as he attempted to relay what he saw before his very eyes, the most notable phrase of the entire report being, “Oh, the humanity!” Then, in a now-classic Thanksgiving episode of WKRP in Cincinnati, about a local small-fry radio station struggling to stay relevant and in business in a big city, the characters devised an elaborate promotion for their station: toss turkeys from a plane allowing them to fly down to a field with their intrepid on-the-spot news reporter, Les Nessman, giving a live account of the event. HOWEVER, no one knew that turkeys can't fly, so the live report was of Les describing the harrowing scene of the poor birds splatting to their death, and grievously screaming the horrifically famous "Oh, the humanity!" So, thats where that line comes from!

@@harish123az I tried to find the applicable quote, but I couldn’t so I’ll try and get it the best I can. For me Ross falls under this idea of “A character can be a bad guy, but they can’t be annoying. An annoying character won’t make me want to watch them.” Ross and Rachel both do some selfish things throughout the show, but Ross isn’t funny to me, he’s just annoying, so I have a hard time sitting through most of his shenanigans that lead to bad side effects for other people.
@M3gaHeart
@M3gaHeart Жыл бұрын
@@harish123az just because he is a main character doesnt mean people have to like him. every character in the show has done messed up stuff, but ross has done the most messed up stuff and showed no sign of change throughout the seasons dealing with his immaturity, while rachel had a lot of personal growth becoming independent. i would consider watching a friends video essay to understand it better but you must understand that ross was way more toxic than rachel, he was the source of all their arguments when they were together. you cant just tell someone that doesnt find him funny that theyre wrong, thats not how opinions work. in YOUR opinion all the times he fucked up they were funny, but to those who can insert themselves into the show and understand how frustrating of a person he is, they cant. after all, its funny because of how ridiculous and irrational he is, which are not good traits.
@RB-vo4gi
@RB-vo4gi Жыл бұрын
@@harish123az I never said anyone else had to agree with me or that the annoyance I felt towards Ross was fair. That’s just my opinion, it’s perfectly fine if you don’t agree. I think all of the other characters are funnier than Ross, Joey and Phoebe especially. Rachel is definitely in next to last place. I also think you’ll find that it’s next to impossible for someone to find a show where they don’t dislike at least one of the characters. A character that I like, someone else may hate. And that’s fine. I’m not about to switch off a tv show just because I don’t like a character.

I don’t think those people actually pay attention to the show and just repeat “selfish and spoiled” as if she ever shows those qualities after she first moved in with Monica (behind wanting to avoid cleaning). The Bonnie thing is only close one but Bonnie wanted to do it herself, Rachel just said it could be great. And it’s just hair, Ross could have still dated Bonnie.

Episode 19, the first one, is a textbook great example of how a one-location dedicated episode can rock more than a multi-location, multi-set one with all the bells and whistles. A chamber piece show just needs a more interesting than usual plot as its hook. Obviouslly, the creative forces behind the series are operating at a crazy insane level of unmatched quality at this time. The show is at its absolute apex, firing on all cylinders, reaching dizzyimg heights of creative and commercial success while trail-blazing its use of season long over-arcing storylines within its episodic one and done weekly melodramas and it's highly addictive trademark wrapping up its year long plotline to then inevitably go out into hiatus on another wicked cliffhanger to keep us all hooked over the summer. This show owned us. And the synergy of the perfect group behind the camera as well as in front of it is why they earned the audience's goodwill and confidence to do a bottle episode (industry term for an episode that takes place in a single setting, no frills production value). The comment section brought up a good point of fans usually want these episodes because it gives us a chance to hang with the characters we love and connect with like they were real friends. These show runners, directors (including David Schwimmer next season), writers are so good at what they do and at such a massive creative zenith at this point in time, they seem able to just summon a great weekly premise (or three in Friends case), a ridiculously talented writers room who produce mini masterpiece theatre comedy classics week to week and one of the most charismatic gifted ensembles of situation comedy actors ever assembled for one show in the history of broadcasting. It's really invigorating to relive these episodes again through your new eyes. It's like seeing them brand new once more through the prism of Thor, Nick, influencer supreme! It's also fun to see you sweating the Chandler-Monica relationship and looking for any signs of their union getting torpedoed. It made me remember feeling the same anxiety back twenty years ago when these were airing in real time. I forgot that was a true unspoken unease waiting for that proverbial other shoe to drop. Can't say anything and wouldn't dream of it, but let's put a pin in it here and pick this up at the end of season six. The Chandler-Monica thing was the highlight of season five hands down. Although this last season is considered by majority to be a series crescendo apex of the show at the absolute peak of its powers: SPOILER: Season Six is one of the series' strongest seasons in its ten year run also. Friends is that rare long running show that never jumps the shark and doesn't ever overstay its welcome. Congratulations, my dude. We're at the halfway point in the series run right here. Some of the most memorable, quoted episodes are all still ahead. FINAL WORD: In the 90's, Ben Stiller made it his stock and trade by basically mastering the comedic art of cringe comedy. Creating scenarios and situations where the character makes the situation excruciatingly more awkward and cringe inducing. Vince Vaughn and Jon Favaro got good at this in their movies at this time too. The Judd Apatow movies made a cottage industry out of this also. Mumble Core films made entire running times one long cringe moment. However, one has to give a tip of the hat to the talent, commitment and sheer gusto devotion on a weekly basis for a full decade of his life to David Schwimmer to being the small screen gold standard of the king of awkward and cringe come 41:25 dy. Schwimmer knows full well the public at large will associate Ross and his insanity with Schwimmer himself in the mainstream consciousness. But, kudos to Mr. Schwimmer for not protecting himself, playing Ross ironically or winking to the audience. He fully commits without any safety net to the ever raising stakes of Ross social monstrosities head first, no regrets, no apologies. So, props to a largely criminally under celebrated body of work and force of nature, tour de force committed comedic creation. Schwimmer is The Goat. Ross is boss. Ross's pain is our joy. If Ross were a dinosaur, he'd be a ... PhiROSSeraptor! cough cough

Ross flirting with Caitlin the pizza woman is so cringe but so hilarious! Also, it's funny that Chandler was "flirting" with her because he has never been good at flirting. I agree with you btw, I think if you're in a committed and happy relationship you shouldn't flirt with other people. But it also depends on what people count as flirting. I feel like the Emily thing was kinda out of the blue and weird but I'm glad Rachel told Ross about it. Going after Caitlin was so sweet too, especially like you said that she didn't even tell Ross about it. These two episodes show some of the best sides to Rachel. And I think Joey could have told Ross he was saving the sandwich, NO ONE would understand it better than Ross 😂

When Ross mentions the odor that they put in natural gas (I know here is is done for comedy purposes), but in reality it was the New London school explosion that caused legislation for this to come into effect, placing a strong odor in natural gas that is used by the public. (The New London School explosion occurred on March 18, 1937, when a natural gas leak caused an explosion and destroyed the London School in New London, Texas, United States, killing 294 people, mostly school-age children. The natural gas didn't have an odor, and was building up in the school basement all day - in the afternoon it exploded with tremendous force. There are some KZbin videos about that disaster.)

It's actually very true that some siblings (especially twins) share money. As a twin brother myself, if my sister needs money (specifically if she doesn't have a job) and I have money to spare. I sort of just take it out of my wallet and leave it somewhere that she might see it. People think it's a funny way to do things but it's a energy saver and I usually don't care much for money at this part of my life. This rule/behavior trend for twins isn't universal, though, it's just something that we found out about each other growing up. I don't like having conversations about money (and always seem to have some to spare) while she likes going shopping out for clothes with her friends and forgets about the point that she might need money for later. She usually tells me how much money she took in a text though.

I agree with you! Flirting when in a serious relationship is just not cool. I have rarely found myself getting caught up in witty banter which could have been confused with flirting, but I’d catch myself every time. My partner once told me he flirted with customers (he’s in sales) - and I really had to think hard about if I was ok with that. I told him I was not okay with it, he said it was more like complimentary comments, etc, which I don’t consider flirting with the proper tone. I agree that you can leave yourself open to someone getting the wrong idea and being in a bad situation.

i think if chandler was flirting it would also have been awkward and full of bad jokes. but now he's loved up with monica he has no nerves at all talking to attractive women. he's very natural and smooth seeming because he's not interested.

yeeeeahhhh, i think the idea of flirting can be so personal and culturally specific that it's hard to know for certain what is going to be read as flirting or not. i think there's a big big difference between flirting and being sexually suggestive. i grew up in a very emotionally and physically demonstrative household. i'm always telling my friends that i love them, hyping them up, telling them how beautiful they are, and for people who don't know me, they tend to think that constitutes sexual interest. tbh, i even remember having a teacher interrupting class to tell me to stop flirting with a classmate in the 7th grade. he got a bloody nose and when i looked around for a tissue there weren't any so i was miming handing him one and he was laughing and pretended to take it. for whatever reason, that read as flirting??? i dunno. more to the point, i don't think chandler is doing this consciously. he has a natural charisma that he's cultivated out of survival and it's kinda his default way of interacting with the world. like how he is with his boss, but smoother. we've seen him actually trying to be suggestive with women before and its usually pretty awkward

I have few criticisms when it comes to ‘Friends’, but one episodic plot I’m not a fan of is Chandler and Monica’s flirting debate. Only because Chandler wasn’t really flirting, and then Monica says "so it’s okay for guys to do it and not girls?" which was never Chandler’s point, but then he suddenly starts arguing for that for some reason. If that had started as the debate, it would have been fine, but the original point changed. You’re right about the way the episode was structured though. All of the plots fit together very well. I do, however, love Rachel going out of her way to help Ross in that episode. ❤ That’s just so lovely, and shows how much she cares about his happiness at the end of the day. I think you misread Chandler’s “I’ve done it again” regarding Joey’s grandmother. It wasn’t a callback to Chandler not recognising Mary-Angela. It was a reference to the fact that Chandler tried talking to Joey's grandmother loudly, and then did it again, even after Joey said they didn’t speak English.

Random tidbit: 4:05 Jennifer Aniston's nipples showed up on the show a lot and people wondered throughout the entire show why that was. After the show was over she finally answered that they are just really prominent lol. She was wearing a bra and everything, but they always showed up. It actually became a talking point because of everyone noticing them.

Wow. Just hearing about the potential for Chandler and Monica breaking up was so depressing! 🤣 These episodes are among my favorite. I'm not exactly sure why but maybe because there is so much that doesn't drive any arcing plot forward but they're little quirks about the characters that are just fun to watch. Rachel throwing the souvenir into the lamp, Monica stealing from her brother, Phoebe wanting to know about gas smells, Ross' inability to flirt, Chandler talking to Joey's grandmother, Rachel hiding from "Law & Order" because it's scary, Monica needing ALL margarita ingredients, Chandler having a jewelry box, the comparison of Emily to Rachel running out of a wedding, Joey valuing a meatball sub over his friends, Phoebe saying she'll have to destroy everyone except Joey, and so on... The siren sound from Kill Bill is actually from "Ironside", a wheelchair-bound police detective drama series that debuted in 1967. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWO6opyrf5aXq8k

I don’t think Chandler was flirting. I take it at face value that he was just being friendly. We’ve seen him try to hit on girls lol. Monica definitely wasn’t just saying she flirts all the time. There’s no reason for her to just say that. I think she’s more confident in herself since losing weight & getting her career together. She flirts like normal people do, like maybe an ego boost. But she’s completely secure in her relationship with Chandler so a little flirting doesn’t mean anything. She knows Chandler would never cheat on her, so it doesn’t bother her when Ross says Chandler was flirting with the pizza girl.

I think this relationship was my least favorite of Phoebe's, maybe because i am not a big Michael Rapaport fan or the character itself..I'm with everyone and Chandler was just being his usual joking self and not flirting at all. This is peak Friends for me, the last couple seasons over all are harder for me to watch and enjoy due to certain plots, but still some good moments.

I don't think chandler was flirting. In my opinion his simply a witty guy who.i far more charming when he's relaxed, my boyfriend is much the same. There was no touching or long eye contact or even sexual jokes. Personally I would be ( and am) ok with that level of banter

See, I never saw it as Chandler flirting because I just thought it was almost like a guy trying to make a little sister feel better He knows the pizza girl well cause Joey orders a lot of pizza and when he mentioned the haircut, she said she thought it looked bad and she seemed insecure about it so he was trying to make her feel better. It didn’t seem to me like actual flirting it was like almost generational, separation, or some thing like there’s definitely seems like a clear boundary of that would never happen. I see you as young girl.

That’s exactly how he acts with them, though if one of them showed up, feeling bad about a haircut, he would make a joke about how attractive they are He did it all the time he makes a point of making sure the women in his friend group are 100% aware they’re attractive Long before he ever thought, he had a chance with Monica, he would hype her up
