Don Garlits used to run upwards of 40 degrees advance. Fun story about that when he first started running Hemi in NHRA
@plymouthroadrunner38934 ай бұрын
I've read the 40 degree figure. I'd like to know the reason for so much advance. Supercharged nitro of course. Is it something to do with that?
@guyconnell22504 ай бұрын
@plymouthroadrunner3893 not sure why. Usually NO2 requires less timing. May simply be the shape of the chambers and piston crowns back then.
@plymouthroadrunner38934 ай бұрын
Not nitrous oxide, nitromethane - CH3NO2..
@JerryM-p2v4 ай бұрын
Garlit's was one of the first to run more timing in his engines, he had an advantage until everyone caught on to what he was doing.
@commentaccount4912 күн бұрын
@@plymouthroadrunner3893 The flame front for nitromethane is much slower than gasoline, so you have to run a lot more advance for best power. The reason nobody ran timing up to 40 before was because it was a well known fact that the old 1950's 392 hemi blocks would split and crack from the tremendous pressures on nitro with extreme timing. When the 426 Hemi came along, everybody initially ran the same settings as their old 392 setups. Eventually folks found out the 426 block could take a ton more power than the 392. The Ramchargers race team actually figured it out months in advance of Garlits but also kept it secret.

Now I'm no expert like these two, but with aluminum heads on my 400 ci Pontiac engine I had the initial timing set too low. I know these two are giving total timing. I had my initial timing set at 9 - 10°. On startup it would blow the air cleaner off. I called Edelbrock and they told me it was a slow burn combustion chamber and that aluminum heads can take a bit more timing than iron heads. I know completely different setups and engines. Always great to see Nic going through the problem solving with numerous testing and changes to parts as needed. Always looking forward to the next episode!

I think what you are referring to is the starter fighting against the locked out timing. I think Nick probably could have gotten the motor spinning with the starter before activating the ignition to start, or pumped the carb a few times to purposely flood it and then crank it with the throttle held wide open instead of having to move the distributor to start. Nick knows what he's doing, though. Best not to question a master's techniques😊
