I can tell you the problem with that scoop is that it will draw hot air past the air filter on its way out of the engine compartment. It should be sealed to the air filter. That's the only way to get "colder" air into the carb. I have seen this done on a couple of cars and they all had the same problem with getting hot air, not cold, into the carb because it wasn't done correctly. Heater core is probably for the "mist" out of the defroster vents. i have had that happen on 2 cars.
@karaDee2363 Жыл бұрын
Totally agree,. The way that set up now defeats the purpose of taking advantage of cooler air and high pressure area at the base of the windshield forcing that cooler air into the rear facing Shaker scoop

Live and learn. Since that engine I always installed new fasteners in every build. I built another one from a 70 XF with 71 #96 heads and a 744 cam, PX code turbo 400 with an HEI and RAIII exhaust manifolds. It ran good but I sold it to buy a house in 2003. Had 2 of them T/As. one 1975 & one 1979. The 75 was a much better car than the 79. But both cars needed a work over. Stock T/As are Poontangs. Started with suspensions then engines then trans work. Then the body work to house the big tall & fat tires all round. 4 speeds /3:08:1 positractions/ headers & straight pipes.@ 45 degrees. After all that, they stayed on the roads at speed. P.S. I took out the power brake system & put in an accumulator system like what is on aircraft. No need for a vacuum booster. Every vehicle should come with that system. Works flawlessly. Don't forget the roll cage. If you drive fast, be protected. No need for a stereo but a 2 way radio is a must & a fuzz buster. No A/C, no power windows or door locks.

Two things, 1 it’s to bad he opted, or someone did, for the aftermarket hood, the shaker is pretty cool, and this has the fixed scoop. And as for your 72, if it was the 455 HO they were not great motors, I had one brand new in 1971, was I a kid with a lead foot? ABSOLUTELY! That being said, after the third motor, under warranty, I ordered my 72 W-30, 442, which I have to this day, that HO motor on the TA, carried about 5 lbs oil pressure at idle, once warm, and that applies to all three of them, spun bearings were not uncommon, the later 455 SD, was a far superior motor.👍 This is a nice looking example of the 74, but in all honesty, I prefer the 70-73, in my opinion, the styling on the nose and tail was cleaner, but that’s just my opinion.

@OlSgtLove I am a Mopar fan and you won't hear anything from me. Other than one fault I noticed back in the day. The Pontiac 400 block didn't like high RPM. I had a few lead foot friends with bearing problems. I owned a TA in the early 90s. Most 70's cars were garbage and the TA was ahead of it's time. What other car from that era could out handle a TA? Probably the Corvette, but I can't think of another. A 75 Dodge Dart sport could beat a 76 400 TA in the 1/4 and in top speed, but no by much and the Dodge couldn't touch it in handling. I also had a friend that had a done up 400 78 TA with over 400 HP and he smoked all of us. He also typically had the peddle to the floor and never had any issues. I think the 400 can be a strong engine if rebuilt right, so it can handle higher RPM. I can give credit where credit is due, and the TA is a genuine classic. My favorite of the 70's for sure.

Nick hello. It's been too hot in the south🥵😁. I found a 71 with a 455 twin turbo. The turbo,s were mounted one on each side as expected, but it looked factory. I'd never seen a 455 twin turbo 4 speed T/A - firebird before. Did Pontiac make a 455 twin turbo car, 4 speed ? It was dark grey with black cloth seats. 😊

Very nice TA Nick! I think most old cars especially with original wiring should have a quick disconnect on the battery neg side. I always use it after I pull my GTO in the garage.

1974 Trans Am.... of all the Trans Am's for the decade, the 1974 was the only 1 year body style.....and in my mind the best looking. Pontiac did a marvelous job getting the 1974 car ready for that 5 mph mandated bumper.

Hi, having spunned bearings on 3 engine, one of the main problem is the oil filter being too small for the large bearings of these Pontiac engines

smoke coming out of the vents could be from the blower motor resistor pack overheating. They sometimes fail on their own, but also if the blower motor seizes they can get too hot and start smoking.

Sweet, looking ride the only thing I don’t like is that shifter I’ve driven 18 wheelers with a shorter throw
@rotaxtwin Жыл бұрын
That's a tasteful ride, I would not bother with decals, but hey - it's his car. Those aftermarket wheels are spot on, it's a 4 spd and it's from my favourite era for Firebirds; the early 70s. The engine sounds great, not the tow truck 455 typical of that time. Very nice example of a smogger malaise era pony car.

Hi Nick, I just subscribed. This car is awesome. When you were driving I could see 2 vertical lines in the grill and the lower valance openings. Radiator tanks I think. Personally, I would paint those matte black so they don't stick out so much.

@Nick's Garage - There seems to be some sort of dark box obstructing the view of the rear differential. What is that?
@nickpanaritis4122 Жыл бұрын
That is a shield welded to the after-market muffler to keep the heat away from the fuel tank.

I'd love to have the same car or a 70-72 Camaro in Gulf Green with a black top, black stripes and black interior along with a fully wrinkle/matte black motor built by Nick. I'm thinking a gnarly 396 or 408.

Really nice work,Nick but it need a headliner , for the interior .btw every time you put a car over a other one on your lift you should cover the car under specialy with a white convertible top!! you never know when a leak will happend in the night.

I went to look at a rolled 455 HO year's ago Nick. A friend bought it eventually and the motor was actually a 455 Super Duty. The stickers on the car someone had put on wrong. Screaming Chicken sounds better 😄👍

I had in my falcon here in Australia that some leaf litter had fallen on the internal fan resistor while the fan was on and started to burn for a short time. All ended ok. Maybe you had a similar problem with this car.

Love the car but why mould the shaker hood to the hood panel? Intake too tall ?
