In never thought backlocks were ever going to be a thing for me, that is until I saw, handled and bought my Native Chief last year. I love everything about it. What first attracted me to it was the size. I love big knives. I asked the saleslady if I could take a look at it so she brought it out and handed it to me. It's such a beautiful piece and I absolutely love the ergonomics. Right there and then I decided to go for it and not once have I regretted buying this knife. It's not only an excellent piercing tool, It's a heck of a slicer too. I tried it on thick cardboard and it sailed through like it wasn't even there. To those thinking about getting a Native Chief, stop thinking and go out and get one. You won't regret it.

Nick, thank you for always pointing out when knives are completely ambidextrous! As a lefty, it can be really frustrating when I see excellent knife designs that make no concessions for left-handed opening, use, closing, or carry. Sure, they’re still usable, and it’s not a huge deal, but it is still a deal. Ideally, I’d love to see more makers make folders that are usable for wrong-handed folks as well!

Gotta disagree with a lot of the criticisms here. Sorry nick. I get that you like smaller knives, but this was designed to be larger deliberately. For the viewership size does play a factor. While he does give size comparisons in the video sometimes just "seeing" it does not do it justice. You never realize how big a knife is until you struggle to fit your phone in the same pocket or how heavy it is until you notice you need a belt before you walk out the door as your pants are sagging heavily due to the extra 5.5 ounces in your right pocket. While it may come off as redundant, Nick restating that this is a big knife is to drive home the fact that these factors will come into play when you EDC this knife.
@thsbulldawg825 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Seems that variety is a good thing. I'm so glad I don't have to deal with these people who are afraid of every damn thing. Very few here in Ga would care. 1:32 "I think the price is... fine." It's interesting, just like Spyderco's pricing methods, that you neglect to compare this to the most comparable knife in terms of quality and size... the Spyderco Shaman. Which is also made of S30V and G-10. And is smaller, using less materials... And costs $50 more than the Native Chief - a newly released knife at that. Just saying, if price was a sticking point, you didn't knock the Shaman for that when you otherwise should have if this is an indication. I really do not see the Shaman as being a $190 knife when the same company makes knives that use the same materials and more of it that somehow cost less.

I appreciate that you mentioned the size as being a little much for many people, but didn't really count off so much as let people know that it is larger than many folks are comfortable with. I have two of these, exclusives in REX45 and M4, and it's a great design, kind of like a folding Arkansas Toothpick in my eyes. It was a great idea from the Glessers and friends to make variants on the Native. Will check for those sharper edges - they're fine users so I think I won't mind lightly sanding anything sharp other than the spine (hoping I can strike a firesteel with it). You doing the Stretch 2XL soon? It is one of the lightest knives I've ever held in that size and more solid than I expected with that lightness. Guess it's going to be EDC soon, thoguh I have some nice fallback/followup carry blades.

Ordinary pocket knives, ones able to be carried in a concealed manner without a permit, must be less than 4 inches in length. Anything of this length or longer will require a permit in order to carry concealed. If you use a knife in self-defense the type of knife will be a minor charge tacked onto a Felony Assault charge. IMHO, based on experts that I've posed this question to its much less an issue than how it is perceived. If it was legitimate self-defense and not ego-fighting, you will be okay. P.S. Spyderco perplexes me. I bought a Dragonfly 2 in ZDP-189. The specs on this steel give a Rockwell range of 64 to 71. I called them to find out what hardness they made it to and was informed that they do not release hardness information on their knives to the public. I don’t expect them to do what Rockstead does and give a certificate with the precise hardness of each knife, but a two point range is standard. If they can’t control the heat treating process well enough to be confident of it, they shouldn’t be selling quality knives. Other companies don’t seem to have any problem doing so.

The talk about length is pointless ("You could be getting a felony off of the .1 inch" - baloney). Four inches means nothing. It depends on local laws. In Los Angeles, folding knives cannot be more than 3 inches. Less than 2 hours south, in San Diego, there is no size limit (as in California in general).
