I like his designs. But I always struggle with the prices that inevitably come with a Reate production. They do great work, but for their price I feel as though I can get a better product elsewhere

"normal" reates are good for their price, the problem is that liong mah adds another 150-200$ and that's definitely not worth it.
@fengxueshanshenmiao2 жыл бұрын
a Reate-made knife is different to another Reate-made knife. I own a Chaves Liberation Street Flipper as well as a Liong Mah L1, and the L1 just feels better executed.
@Schnoizl2 жыл бұрын
@@fengxueshanshenmiao i have a few peña-x and regular reates, quality wise they feel completely equal, grinds, tolerances, action; no difference. there may be exclusive design features on the liong mah like the pivot screw etc. but that's not worth the extra 200$ for me. i have some customized olamics with actual hand sculpted scales, spacers and clips and they didn't cost much more than the liong mah, maybe 70-80 bucks+. i'd take another one of these over this knife any day of the week.

Nice review. I did pick one up 6 months ago and can't put it down. That nail knick is actually a fuller knick and I am able to finger flick with it. I enjoy this blade.
@Cry422 жыл бұрын
The price has always been my biggest issue with his knives. I know it's Reate, but that's not really an excuse when Chaves and Pena are also using them and still coming in $50-150 cheaper.
@RushDone2 жыл бұрын
What's the model of chaves and pena integral frame knife?
@Nkdc3332 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t call it a nail nick, but rather a fuller. I can easily middle finger flick it using the fuller, giving an added deployment method.
@TheBDubbs32 жыл бұрын
He always complains about fullers, nail nicks and flicking pockets “because stuff can get stuck in there” never been an issue on any of mine. Maybe because I actually just wipe my knife clean after using it on stuff like his favorite example, cheese. Lol.

I completely fell in love with the Zulu, but it was more expensive than any knife I've bought. Ended up getting it and the action was very disappointing. It felt like the machining was uneven when opening and closing. I sent it back, but really want to get one that is good since I love the design. Should I give it another shot?
@RumzDizzle2 жыл бұрын
Great knife but price point should be in the 400-500 range. Feels premium and super glassy action. Classy blade for dressy occasions. Mine’s a keeper but I def understand the aversion given the price point.
@joshxcor2 жыл бұрын
Beautiful knife, but I agree that the price is a little ridiculous for what it is. I understand that being an integral and S90V the price goes up a bit...but it's still too high. I'm with you Nick!
@jonkussmaul36772 жыл бұрын
is there an example of an integral with overlays that aren't attached from the outside? that ishtar isn't an integral so, not really a fair comparison. maybe I'm dense but I can't really imagine how overlays could be attached internally on an integral ... how would you get inside to attach it?
@jamesR19902 жыл бұрын
Specialized tools. Internal milling allows for some options too, or an overlay that wraps over the spine. Maybe a specialized adhesive. There's a few options.
@BladeLabMiami2 жыл бұрын
Because the scale can't be removed anyway, there is no reason to use screws. The overlay should have been glued on. Just a bizarre and terrible choice to put those little screws in there.
@JamesWilliams-gx3rr2 жыл бұрын
I agree w you Jon, there's nothing wrong with a couple of screws holding the overlays on. How else would you do it on an integral?? These other responses are frankly a little absurd: "specialized tools" what does that mean? Then what? Magic? Then glue or adhesive? On an overlay? Come on ppl. Imagine the complaining when it falls off!
@Ryan_the_tinz2 жыл бұрын
I actually like the nail knick. It adds a nice detail to the deployed blade. I agree the screws on the inlays are an odd choice. They could just glue them or even just use black screws.

nice review of an interesting product!! I find most of it great and good. I like the mixture between somehow classic design and new generation action and materials. The only flaws I find, in which I agree with you are the handle screws (I felt there was somethig and I only realised when you mentioned) and the price. Lovely knife anyway!
@thepracticalblade90132 жыл бұрын
Yeah we've come too far for this to be $610, especially out of China (as a fanboy of most Chinese brands). Integrals are more expensive to make.... sure... but the markup just feels..... painful. Way too many $300 knives that I'd rather have 2 of. I'd say $600 would be fine if the issues you mentioned weren't there, but with everything I see here? Ehhhhh..... Good review, as always!

There’s a lot of things that you care about that I don’t Nick, but I’m with you on the price. It’s hard to justify a 600 dollar Reate when you can get a CRK Sebenza with inlays for less.
@AhmadRiyal2 жыл бұрын
is the difference just the brand name and the country of origin or is there a tangible difference?
@landontreinen30622 жыл бұрын
@@AhmadRiyal Chris Reeve Knives is a US company that produces extremely high quality production knives in America. Granted this is a personal preference, but I’d rather buy a Bog Oak Inlay small Sebenza 31 or an Mnandi from them for less money than shell out 600 for this just because it’s an integral. Or I’d rather buy the same knife from Reate made in China that is not an integral and pay around 350 if that were such a thing. This knife is being sold at the top of its range simply because of the integral construction which to me is not worth the extra money when I could have US made production knives like a Sebenza for less money.
@landontreinen30622 жыл бұрын
@@AhmadRiyal to be clear, I’ve got nothing against Reate or Chinese made high end production knives. It’s just my personal opinion that the draw to those Chinese production knives is less intense the higher up they climb in the price range, especially once they surpass American made high end production knives.
