@@woodsrdy51 There were 'a few' guys like that to be conservative. Of top of my head, the entire cast of bad boys, Xaiver McDaniel, Gary Payton, Barkley, Mourning, Starks and Oak just to name a few. Some are just out-right more nutty and in your face than the others, such as the entire cast of bad boys (with Lambieer, Rodman and Mchorn spear-heading the rest) lol. Pretty much of them would just go toe to toe in term to anyone physically and never backed down. It was the overall culture of letting physicality happens as part of the game back then that led to the existence of such breed. They still existed around and after 2000 as we can see some of those fires in guys like Rasheed Wallance, Doug Christie and Ron Artest. But the dirty plays were from that point on heavily punished. And now we see a lot of wannabe tough guys that aren't actually tough but they love pretending like one by showing off their guns after some and-1 plays.

As a Houstonian and a huge goat fan I use to love those mad max MJ battles! Vernon was one of only 2 guys that would try and aggressively D up on MJ single handedly and possibly the only player to have 2 way success against MJ . I loved him for giving that old college try..

Not only Vernon "Mad Max" Maxwell, but also add John Starks, Gerald Wilkins, Gary "The Glove" Payton and Joe Dumars to that cadre of diligent one on one defenders of MJ.

@@granvillewalkerjr.8394 I agree with the glove. I have him and Maxwell as two of the toughest defenders v MJ..Gerald Wilkins..not even, John Starks..very seldom, that was more hype and cause of where he played. I did love their enthusiasm and delusions though

Vernon only looked good vs Mike because he had the GOAT help defender Hakeem watching his back. He leaves Houston.....and his first game in Philly vs chicago MJ put 48 on him and Stack. Toughest jordan defender imho was Alvin Robertson. That dude was tough as nails.
