The reason why Mad Max appears to be crazy is because he's an extremely competitive guy. He was an alpha-male athlete. And truth is, those are the type of players scouts on good winning teams want. Scouts on winning teams are not recruiting boy scouts. All of those guys especially at that level are straight up crazy and extremely competitive! I respected Mad Max when he was playing. Anyone who's been involved in that culture and plays near the level Mad Max played understands him.

I was there that day, when this happened. I worked for The Sonics broadcast. We knew something was wrong, because it was taking a long time to get the starting lineups, which they normally give out an hour or so before the game. It was taking forever, for the lineups. We started hearing a player was injured, then it was a player was hit with a weight, due to a fight. Nate finally comes out the locker room and you could tell something bad had happened!

Vernon actually looks a lot less intimidating today. Probably because he’s smiling more these days and just storytelling. But back in his playing days. I felt like he was one of the guys you definitely didn’t want to fuck with. And that was even with him being a guard. He definitely gave me hood vibes back in his playing days.
