This video helps 3D laser scanner users understand the limitations and proper scan techniques of their equipment in the field. What does "Range" mean? If the scanner is rated at 1-4 or 2-5 mm accurate, at what distance is that accuracy accomplished from the scanner itself? Is 330 meter range describing the accurate data collected at 330 meters? or is the accuracy only 70-80 ft from the scanner? Why? All these answers and more.

Hi Nick. Indoor vs Outdoor. I'm using Faro X330. I scan wind turbine blades that are normally (on supports) on the ground. Scanning 90% of the blade, i use an "outdoor" setting, and alignment of these scans goes well. scan distance is approximately 5-20metres. . The problem I see is when I carry out a scan very close up to the blade, and we are talking within 1 metre. I did this with the same outdoor settings, with the thinking that, oh, more points more better, and yes, the points cloud i get is very dense, but i have noticed that actually, when i come to align these 'close up scans' with the other ' far away' scans, the geometry doesn't line up. like, my closeup scans, i feel like they are distorted, and object lengths are slightly longer, and their distances to the scanner are slightly further away even...I cant understand or explain why this is, can you understand it? I will try 'Indoor' settings for close up scans in the future, thank you for your video

Hi, what would be the best setting for scanning outdoor piping systems with in a range 25ft and less. Most of the piping we scan is located outdoors and no larger the 12in diameter.

at that range, 1/4 3x would be appropriate
