Your first mistake trying to work out how much per person per day is that you’re not just paying for their time on site that day, you’re paying for the years of experience, knowledge and expertise which not only makes them quicker to do the job but gives you all the assurances you need as you progress. Skilled trades are there for a reason. Great video guys.

Hmmm 🤔 I personally think that you should definitely get the professional bricklayers to put your extension up. This a very very critical part to your build and needs to be absolutely spot on regarding regs, quality and speed. Any errors made at this point will only cause you more trouble further on in the build. Good luck with whatever you choose to do 👏👏
@NickyandHarri29 күн бұрын
Thanks for this Chris! It’s definitely a job that if we do, do it ourselves, we’d have lots of guidance and help from professionals who know what they’re doing! We’d never do anything where we would risk any big mistakes or problems 😊

DIYing is doing it yourself, but definitely have that "foundational" day with the bricklayer around to draw as much experience from them. That will definitely be worth the money

Make sure you cover up all of those blocks. If they get soaked, it will be a nightmare. I’m guessing your building materials will be around £2500. Also buy a roll of Hessian fabric to cover up any newly laid block work, just in case it freezes over night to protect the mortar. Great channel. Best of luck, it’s going to look amazing in the end.🙂

I think I’d sacrifice the garage while building the extension! Knock it down, so you can get the machinery down there! You can build off the same foundations and looks like you’ll probably be doing a new roof anyway? It might seem like a huge job but I think it’ll save you time and money in the long run! Ps love your show! X
@Mrreal187129 күн бұрын
I was thinking the same. Just cut the back wall and knock the bricks through. The digger is shorter than the garage.

You need to pay the professional brick layers. As you have to be sure it will pass inspection and comply with regs. Otherwise you'll be made to take it down and do it again.
@Aysha-y2x29 күн бұрын
I would say get the pros to lay up to DPC levels also giving you a chance to learn and then Nikki the brikki and crew can crack on from there, so far you guys have managed a lot by doing it yourselves and with that same enthusiasm you can definitely do the brick works for the extension. Good luck
@BriezeBradford-m7r24 күн бұрын
For foundation depths you can use the NHBC tables from chapter 4.2. If you’ve got clay subsoil the trees will have an impact on depths. If you’ve can identify nearby trees this will give you a rough idea of the depths you’ll need to dig down to.
@prospect266429 күн бұрын
Personally i would get the pros do the bricklaying, atleast the first part, just so everything is 100% correct and there wouldnt be any issues in the future And maybe you could ask the neighbours if you can move the digger thru their yard, before putting the old shed walls under the track, so the damage to the lawn is minimal or if it at all gets damaged

Great vid guys! I would say if you get a couple of sheets of ply out the front and cut the bulk bags onto the sheets of ply while the delivery lorry holds them in the air it’s ten times easier to shovel the sand into barrows while still keeping it clean! You’re working so hard and keep the graft up guys! 💪🏻
@sergeantswish979529 күн бұрын
Love your enthusiasm & positivity! It'll be worth buying yourselves a laser level & staff, these are invaluable for setting out/digging foundations, running drains etc. Might also be worth considering trench filling your foundation instead of blocks, the time saved Vs cost is worth the savings imho & if you set some pegs in the pour to the level you need it's definitely going to make your first lay of block/brick much easier. If it were me I'd take the digger through the old garage and drop the back wall, it will also make it easier to move things front to rear etc. Keep up the great work 👍
@NickyandHarri29 күн бұрын
Hi bud, appreciate this comment- definitely very insightful as we hadn’t thought about the garage option before! However, the garage is probably 15 bricks above floor height so would be a mighty ramp on the other side! 😮
@sergeantswish979529 күн бұрын
@@NickyandHarrijust use some of the cheapest type 2 you can get for a ramp as it only needs to be the width of the digger, then reuse it once the rear is complete. Having the digger in the back is a must to save time/manpower & definitely worth the effort to get it through the garage.👌
@Brainchild11029 күн бұрын
I'm seconding the laser level. They're amazing tools and you'll find a bunch of uses for it, where it will be better and more helpful than a spirit level.

Although it’s a large amount of money to part ways with which sometimes makes you wonder whether to commit or not, I think you should get professionals in to get it off the ground at minimum. Simply because you don’t want to cut corners and then pay double if not more to correct it later down the line. Although you guys are doing a fantastic job from where the project was to where it is now. Lets face it, you’re already saving yourself a bucket load of money with all the DIY you’ve done so far with more to go. Thanks for sharing the journey and look forward to next week! Wishing you both the best; we hope to complete on our probate fixer upper next week 🎉

Hey guys were are doing a similar project on a 1930’s house. To save money try recycling boxes via your council services and also look at using a grab lorry for rubbish clearance. We were paying over £300 for a skip for 6 yards and only £310 for a 16 tonne grab. Good luck. Also if you have a steel company see if they have a 90ft crane to drop them over the house, if you ask nicely they could also drop bags of sand and blocks for you too.
@NickyandHarri29 күн бұрын
Interesting idea RE getting steels lifted around (and some cheeky sandbags!). Unfortunately the pitfall of living in the countryside is access, a grab lorry wouldn’t get down our windey small lane!

I agree with some other comments: if you DIY bricklaying the extension, at least have a pro on Day 1 to establish levelling and lines. If you get the foundation correct, the rest should be easier. Also deffo invest in a laser level. You might also need to think if you need a professional roofer or just window installer for the skylights. By the by, you might want to plan out those skylights and windows and see which curtain/blind options you want. Figuring out which blinds we wanted and where to put them was a minor headache in our flat (which is under a roof so only ONE window is a normal standing window, the rest were skylights). Our skylights were all from a specialist company and the actual model and size are no longer in production, so we couldn't just buy the window blinds and mosquito nets we wanted from the homeware store. Obviously installing all of these straight away if you don't fully understand the Sun movements and the heat patterns makes little sense (unless you REALLY know) so make it a priority within a year of installation. I bring this up as we finally had our last bug screen installed and finished 2 Fridays ago. The bug screens were clearly designed as an afterthought for our windows and had to work around the confines of modern flats, so the workmen constantly had incorrect parts.

I love you guys, how about just getting the foundation blocks laid, they should then be square etc and then you continue 🤷🏻♀️

Do you not have a quarry near by that you can get sand delivered on trailer. Cheaper and much less fuss getting it out of bags. Love the channel keep up the good work 👌❤️

@ Same for type 1 etc. Usually plenty of guys that have pickup/trailer that will deliver for a small fee if you don’t own a tipper trailer?

What’s the secret 🤔 (Sorry Harri you are totally excluded from this convo (it’s important stuff to us girls…))!!
