.....no Nico, no. That intro sucks. It's funny, but it sucks. No it's not bad, but all I know is expecting the epic music to be playing this whole time. What's playing that music in the background, the battle theme or other themes randomly on occasion instead of us going into every Atlas made game and no I don't think unicorn is a part of it unless it is then I could just be dumb but still maybe work on it a little bit more to make it by yourself more funny or at least be something that includes the Epic scope of this game artist talk about now back to so many freaking sexy people.

I never stopped to think that someone not that familiar with the SMT games would be suprised to hear about things like the repel/drain consuming all turns, it feels so natural to me that I forgot it could give some nightmares to anyone experiencing for the first time.

About the dragon. Believe it or not, despite your party members being against facing it, it is actually possible to defeat the dragon and get the treasure.

Highly recommend facing the dragon. You can cheese it pretty easily and the Fire Affinity Weapon is definitely worth it. Unfortunately, once you exit the mines, you can't go back for it and you miss out on the rewards

Fun fact: the "humans" you fight in this game are almost all based on the works of famous Dutch artist Hieronymus Bosch and a representative of the Early Netherlandish school of art. Bosch lived during the early Renaissance/late Medieval era and his paintings are noted for their surreal imagery and grotesque figures, particularly when he painted hell. This is especially notable because his art predates the surrealist schools by almost five centuries. Much of his art is highly evocative for its sheer nightmare fuel though it is likely some of the more bizarre elements of his art are due to painting literal metaphors that have since been lost to time. In particular, Metaphor ReFantazio likes to take influence from his most famous painting, "The Garden of Earthly Delights". The painting is a Triptychs, a form of painting with three separate panels. The first panel shows the Garden of Eden with Christ representing YHVH as he speaks to Adam and Eve, the second panel shows the results of eating the apple of knowledge: mankind engaged in surreal and debauched acts of hedonism with many strange creatures now populating the earth in a monstrous parody of the Garden of Eden which is the titular Garden of Earthly Delights. The final panel shows the results of this debauchery: Hell as eldritch demons torment sinners who have engaged in lustful and sinful acts. The human you fought at the northern fortress is based on a figure of the bottom right of the central panel: two dancers encased in a fruit-like shell surrounded by vines and smaller fruits while an owl perches atop the shell. In Metaphor, this has been turned into a monstrous fusion with the dances now subsumed into the creature as it's legs while the owl fuses to the fruit-like shell (which is now the creature's chest) and gains a monstrous tongue. It's feet are replaced by blades which turns its dance deadly. The vines and fruit surrounding it are now covered in eyes which it can eat to replenish it's health. As you can see, Metaphor takes the already surreal designs of Bosch and turns them even more monstrous. This is the Homo Gorleo, it's name obvious a reference to hominids and their genus "Homo". As for the lesser human, the Homo Oppo is the human that resembles a cracked eggshell with legs and a bird-like face poking out but has a notable arrow going through it. This is inspired by a figure at the central panel of Bosch's painting of "The Last Judgement" where on the bottom of the central panel is a egg with legs and a face sticking through that is pierced by an arrow. Finally, the Homo Fulquilo is the most obscure one and took me a while to find. It comes from "St. John on Patmos", a single panel painting of Bosch's. The figure is the bird-like creature (supposedly a pigeon) on the bottom right corner. Notably, the Homo Tenta, those anthropomorphic teeth that are the mascots of this game do not appear to based on Bosch's paintings.

You MIGHT want to reload and fight the dragon. The reward isn’t NECESSARY, but it does make the next dungeon a lot less resource demanding. Additionally, I’m almost 80 hours in and I’ve never been given the option to go back to that dungeon.

Yeah you can't revisit story dungeons you have to travel to(unless a quest requires it). Gallica says "we have no business there" which sucks cause i only found out about a grind spot in a story dungeon AFTER saving over all saves that would take me there.

I actually just decided to fight him after I had saved from running away from him the first time and learned that he's not as bad as he seems. I do agree that the reward from him is pretty handy tho for the said next dungeon.

You actually can't save anywhere! The save feature is turned off during dungeons. The game will autosave any time you open a chest or pick up a glowing item, but otherwise you have to head back to a Magla Hollow.

There are areas in the dungeom that allow u to save besides hollows(for example: the area you are standing in after strohl's awakening.)

Hopefully I've put enough of a lead up to keep ahead of you. Anyways, here's some general, non-spoiler advise: Go for no-damage victories as much as possible. Don't be afraid to run from fights or abuse the restart battle function, especially if you start at a disadvantage. It's way to easy for a bad start to spiral into a game over. Also, if you discover an elemental weakness/resistance then reset, it will remain in the analysis window. Pay attention to the passives on your Archetypes. If the passive is labeled as a "Hero Passive", then it will only work if that Archetype is on the protagonist. Hero Passives also can't be inherited onto other Archetypes. (EDIT: Glad to see you already caught this one while I'm typing!) It's impossible to "fail" to level up a follower when you hang out with them. If you can spend time with them, they will level up. Every time a character masters an Archetype, they get a permanent stat boost pertaining to that Archetype. Don't forget to change between front & back rows when changing Archetypes. I was swapping Strohl between Warrior & Mage regularly, and I'd always forget to swap him between the rows when I did. Stat buffs/debuffs can be stacked up to three times. Some skills gives multiple stacks at once. If the stat change indicator is blinking, then the buff/debuff will expire next turn. You can get rid of status effects on the field by just running around for a while.

I would recommend just having every character start in the back row. It greatly increases your odds of surviving enemy ambushes(especially with one of the abilities you unlock midgame) if you do so, and as long as you don't forget to switch during a characters turn(and you can always restart the battle if you do) you don't do any less damage either. as for buffs and debuffs. there really isn't that much reason to go for the entire 3 stacks. the difference in damage between a level 1 and level 3 buff/debuff is the same as the difference between no buff and a level 1 buff. as such you don't have to refresh your own buffs whenever they are flashing. when they run out is usually good enough. EDIT: another thing that might be easy to miss. every time you rank up an archetype(even when they don't get skills) the stat boost they give while equiped is improved. as such a rank 20 basic archetype will usually give a better stat boost than an rank 1 advanced archetype. something that might be worth remembering if you want to change archetypes right before a difficulty fight.

Ah yes, NicoB becoming familiar with this variation of the Press Turn system. Indeed, it applies to all sides of the battlefield. It is a lot of fun once you get the hang of it. But you also have to consider that one mistake can cost you everything.

Absolutely devastated that the “now back to” doesn’t include Etrian Odyssey in some form. It’s surprisingly overlooked despite arguably being Atlus’ third biggest series; it had 8 main games and 2 Mystery Dungeon spinoffs released from 2007 to 2019, served as the basis for Persona Q and Q2, and received HD remasters of its first 3 games in 2023. Being a celebration of Atlus as a whole, Metaphor includes some pretty notable references to EO, which often go over the heads of people unfamiliar with the series.

Just as a heads up because the game will do things like this a lot, That bit with the Dragon and the gang advising you on either fighting it or not, 99 percent of the time you'll want to press on with the harder option. The dragon fight, while hard, is 100% doable at this stage of the game, and rewards you pretty handsomely with a treasure that will be an immediate help.

That dragon is a one and done type of deal, that is the only chance you have to fight it. The reward is nice and all but not essential so feel free to skip it if you want. Also here is a kitty for you 😺

15:30 Hi Nico, if you ever heard someone playing hard mode SMT and saying “I missed, well I’m dead”, that’s why. In most SMT games giving turns to the enemy too early can destroy an entire strategy. Hope this game is not the same, but the advantage attack may offset that.

You can stack buffs and debuffs up to three times but so can the enemy. Adding another stack also resets the overall turn counter back to three.

Finally, metaphor is back! Since you already know about mage on MC being important to replenish MP, another important tip is that your damage scales directly with the stat of the weapon you have equipped, so if you have a better weapon on an archetype youre not currently using, its worth considering swapping to that archetype if you need higher damage. So when you see equipment for sale, you need to decide if the damage upgrade is worth spending your money or not. Sometimes a weapons special effect might make it worth using even if its lower power though. Also, you get items that increases archetype exp pretty often, so dont worry too much about when to use them, especially if you really want to unlock an upcoming skill.

It's a pretty big transition if you come in from Persona, in which the melee weapons have very little value outside of their side effects, as the damage you deal with Persona skills is calculated from your inherent stats, and weapons do not affect it. The most valuable thing of a melee weapon would be their side effect, like a sword that gives +5 Magic. Here in Metaphor, the raw damage of a weapon *does* calculate into the damage output with your Archetype skills. For the first time in Atlus games, the numbers actually matter!

That dragon was a great surprise in the demo! Was a very close fight on hard without grinding and a few attempts to learn it. This game was designed so well in so many aspects; excited to see what you think of it!

Miscellaneous tips: 1- Your face glows in the menus if you are currently in a dungeon 2- If you defeat an enemy the next time you encounter it you will know what weaknesses it has 3- You cant save in a dungeon except in magla hollows, however this game auto saves even in dungeons VERY frequently so you usually wont lose that much progress 4- Being in the front row only boosts physical damage (Physical skills and normal attacks)

The delay for this series has given me enough time to finish the game so I can watch nico play with no worries. A fun little fact about the action combat is that there's actually a "perfect dodge" system in this game. It's not flashy or super noticeable so most people will probably do it without realizing it but if you dodge at the last second of an enemy attack (the white flash) your allies, without fail, will punish the enemy and beat on them. This is useful for some later archetype passives but usually isn't worth going out of your way to do (it will probably just happen) but it is a neat little thing they added

That intro is pretty accurate cause in many ways this game just feels like Atlus tried to combine all their series into one. Persona mechanics, SMT gameplay, Digital Devil Saga stuff, Devil Summoner stuff, Soul Hacker stuff, etc. Last Bible, Strange Journey, etc.

A few "advance" tip on stuff you have learnt 1. The enemies natural spawn rate is very slow if you want to recover mp using the mage's skill. But the whole dungeon (with a few exceptions enemies) will be reset if you enter the akademia via the entrance of the dungeon of the magla hallow 2. While the tutorial did say physical debuffs stays after battle, what it didn't say is that it will cure over time, it's just very slow. So if you want to save some money/items, you could just run around any safe space for a while and any poison/burn/ etc etc will eventually heal 3. Bosses that have those "warnings" as part of their attacks will almost always one shot you, so make sure you either learn how to evade it like what you did or at the very least guard, cause they can party wipe you in an instant if you aren't careful

Not sure if you will see this but at any point go to archetype screen put the cursor over the metal heart in the center on any character and press X. A very interesting dialog box will appear.

I wish I knew about the Magic Recoevry skill earlier. I spent 2 in-game days clearing the first main dungeon, and it was only afterwards I found out about it.

38:45 the archetype you see above your character everytime you unpause the game is there to remind you what archetype you're currently equipping. Its a small detail but pretty handy. Also, who wouldnt want to see the archetype models popping out of your screen? I personally love to see it

The dragon isn’t even that bad. Mage Blizz just wrecks that first dungeon, including the Dragon. And the sword he has is pretty nice for a decent part of the early game before it falls off.

Well, I’m glad the game gave you party control just after the first boss with no resistance. Can you imagine if the game would have tossed you in a boss battle against an enemy who could take advantage of a skill used by your ally, and that ally would spam it infinitely? AHAHAHAHAAHAHAH…yeaaaahhh….

39:26 That is actually one of the reasons I prefer the Press Turn system over Persona's One More system: Without special setups, you can't just steamroll all the enemies with the protagonist or anyone else; instead, the game forces you to actually build a viable team and think more about things like passing, guarding, agility and block/repel/absorb affinities.

You don't actually need to use Status Heal Items outside of battle... just run around for a bit and it will eventually heal by itself. 55:20 You can 100% fight that Dragon... it's not a hard fight but super worth it... also you can't go back to fight the Dragon... the mine collapsed.

The Hero Passive for the Seeker Archetype means that whenever you are attacking the enemy before starting the [squad] battle, the chance for allies to help is increased.

A useful tip for grinding exp in the dungeons. Going back to the entrance respawns all monsters, you can take advantage of overworld combat to level up assuming youre strong enough to kill them in overworld combat

Great to see you playing Metaphor, it's been a lot of fun playing hard mode. The dragon was a fun fight. (enemy ambushes suck though, especialy at earlier stages where i could just hope i don't die)

As you were reading about Press-Turns at 14:30, it immediately dawned on me that you havent really played a Shin Megami Tensei game on the channel, that blew me away, because this system is pretty much completely new to you, a lot of strategy lies within the Press-Turn system, make sure to test a lot of stuff out to see if they give you press turns, sometimes even passing a turn will give you an extra press turn!

You really should've fought the dragon. The reward is worth the risk. Also, the protagonist's Mage passive allows the party to replenish MP for every enemy they beat. It's only 1 point apiece, but if you can dispatch them in the overworld (Provided you're 3 levels higher than them), then you can just go to town on them without squad battling, leave, come back and do it all over again. It's a really useful tactic for early-game dungeons.

"I've been waiting for this!" I've really been looking forward to this playthrough to finally start "For Real?!", I've been having a lot of fun playing this game whilst recovering from my recent thyroidectomy. Just thought I might drop a couple of tips from my experience playing the game (on Hard mode for reference) About the Mage's MP regain it's only 1 point for stun/kill, which makes it sound useless. BUT the enemies in this game are typically grouped up which means if you run into a group of say 20 weak enemies, then that's 20 points of MP back for your whole party. This trick is what will help you beat dungeons in a single visit (this really helped me on hard mode as you can very easily bleed through MP trying to get a flawless victory), by backtracking to earlier sections and killing respawned weak enemies to regain MP. You don't really have to worry about this trick making you overpowered as the exp you get from weak enemies is reduced. It's a good idea to put every party member through the Mage Archetype at some point, as you'll want to ensure they can all hit elemental weaknesses, and always take full advantage of the press turn system. For your party line up, it's a good idea to basically put them all permanently at the back row at the start. This helps prevent you getting screwed over by ambush attacks. Buffs and Debuffs also work differently in this game (compared to Persona) as there are actually levels too them. So when you reapply a Buff/Debuff you aren't just extending it but also increasing its effect. I'd recommend getting your Knowledge to Rank 2 when you can, as a feature is locked till you get to that point. You can get it to Rank 2 very quickly, as there's an early quest that helps give a big boost towards it. Hope these little hints help you max out the "Optimal" Royal Virtue!

Just remember, feel free to use the retry feature in squad battle, it makes this game waaay more forgiving than mainline smt games.

This isn't a crazy detail that you should follow, but whenever a character learns a new archetype, they have unique dialogue related to that archetype. They can be fun little insights into the character if you choose to read them

All I can say Nico, is that this might just be the greatest game Atlus has ever made. Like not even being hyperbolic, I am enamored with this game in pretty much its entirety! I am glad you were a bit delayed to getting on this series so I can actually watch it without spoilers since I am currently ahead of you. Enjoy the magic man, you're in for a treat!

The mage MP recovery is really great early game, I was able to do the first main dungeon in one run using that, but the 1 mp recovery is much more annoying later in the game as your mp pool grows

The sound I made when I got the notification for this video is on level with Takatoshi’s excitement for yakisoba pan. One thing I don't think the game ever mentions, is that there are ranks to stat increases and decreases. So you can increase an allies attack/defense/hit rate 3 times I think. The same can be done to enemies to decrease theire stats by 3 ranks. There are also later skills that increase and decrease by 3 ranks in one move.

The Dragon fight IS actually doable at that point in the game. If I remember correctly it’s easier than the game makes it out to be. It’s optional though and the only treasure you really missed was a weapon that’ll help you through this next section of the game, it’s cool but not toooo busted, so you’ll be good.

Hi - I’m super excited about this let’s play! Here’s a tip in terms of saves - yes, you can only save in safe rooms - however, there’s a lot of convenient auto-saves that usually ensures that even if you failed a major fight (like the human owl or dragon), you won’t be set back too far at all, so don’t be too afraid to try out optional bosses even if the safe room is further back

"I can save, but also I can kinda save anywhere" You actually cannot save inside a dungeon unless you're at a save point. The option is blocked out.

so awesome to see you play this game, just finished the game a week ago super fun and some real great twists with a good story I hope you enjoy. one quick tip: don't worry about using an archetype after you got it to max rank (which is 20 for all archetypes) because after you max it out every time you get 1000 exp for a maxed archetype you get hero something (i don't remember what it's called) which it is an item that gives an 1000 archetype exp to anyone you use it on so don't worry about wasting exp.

The limited MP thing is primarily reserved for Persona. It is a factor in this game, but it's not something that's common to most ATLUS games, mostly due to the lack of time constraints. Mainline SMT, for instance, doesn't generally have MP problems, at least in the more recent games like SMT V. SMT V doesn't really have a ton of traditional dungeons, it's mostly just overworld, and you can fully heal your party for cheap at any save point, which are decently common and you can teleport to them from wherever.

One thing that I should remind is that like Persona 5, the groups of people going (chatter, mumble) are interactable and you can listen in on them, not just the people with the (…) cloud over them. Some give a lot of set dressing and details you could listen to!
