Leider konnte ich Nicolai Gedda nie live auf der Bühne des Nationaltheaters in München erleben. Aber Lucia Popp durfte ich in der Fledermaus unter Carlos Kleiber erleben. Welch eine wunderbare Stimme, die leider viel zu früh verstummt ist. RIP

I have actually sung with him. Or, rather, my high school class did, in the 80's. We sang Rachmaninovs All-night Vigil. He was a friend of our music teacher and sang the solo part (probably for free). We were only about 17 or 18 years old, and our music teacher asked (or perhaps told, ha ha) a former pupil with a low bass voice to help out. Nicolai Gedda helped out with the pronunciation of the text (in Church Slavonic).

I have been long familiar with Gedda's voice on records only, this is the first time I have seen him on film and with an aria that I really like. I think the Duke in the operette has the best songs - so full of mischief. To think Strauss cooked up this operette in such a short time.Thanks

I adore Popp’s singing. Gedda, to me, projects a very studied expression. Always lovely, but not engaging. Comments?
