I've been painting for 24 years and I learnt more in 10 minutes than I learnt over the last 20 years. Thank you Nic.

Unbelievable, I learned a lot of this over 10 years. You taught this in 20 minutes. You have a great way how you explain and a nice voice to listen too. I don't know much about you, but I think you are a really good teacher. Keep up the good work!

Very nice Nic juat absolutely great info especially for a someone who is starting portraits. Just finished a portrait class and i understood the basics but what u just said in tbis make the basic more understandable to where u go nezt in the process and what techniques to use.. Its what was hung up on amd givea u fear of failing or stressed on if u'll actually be able to do it. Thaks my man for simplifying things. 🤙

The pre-mixing tip was something I didn't know until recently and it's why I didn't try oils for the longest time. I was always told that oils and acrylics can't be pre-mixed and therefore I assumed that they wouldn't work with what I'm used to with dry mediums or mediums that can be reactivated like gouache. However, knowing that they can be pre-mixed to maximize efficiency and that it's a matter of proper storage and preparation has been a huge motivation to explore this medium. I don't mind the time and efforts in pre-mixing. I would rather rake out as muc guesswork as I can so I can focus on learning in the moment.

I agree with everything you teach. But you also made me smile when you talked about beginners and showed a few very famous painters with a red cross through their paintings😂

Hi Nick, those metal tubes are tough to fill, sealing is messy, and hard to find. Jerry’s tends to carry them in bulk; amazon occassionally carries them in small quantities. Suggested solution: buy plastic syringe tubes (i.e. amazon 20 piece, 10ml, $14). There is a rubber washer at the start of the plunger that neatly scapes the paint down to exit. Also comes with cap or you can dip the point into vascline for sure tight seal. Furthermore, the syringes come in lots of sizes making filling easier. I very much like having premixed colors, find three values suffient to start the flesh string of values.

Thanks for the tip! I've got a load of them and have had the problem of keeping ready mixed paint fresh. Never thought of this. Sounds better than screw top tubes.

Whau super strong intro directly beginning with your inspiring demonstration - with a simplified palet and easy color mixing just from Mars Black, titanium White , yellow ochre and Chinese vermillion red 🤍🖤💛♥️and love tips to make the painting process optimal - the preferred premixed Colors and put Them in tubes ready to go and keep the transparente by scraping with a palet knive or using sandpapir when the underlayer has dried to keep a Soft and Nice surface 😄

Hi Nic, I see a ot of me in your desciptions of the mistakes a beginner makes in portraits. I get too tight a become caught up on detail which is not the direction I want to travel in. I don't want to create a photo like image. People say i've got talent and like the imges saying it's like a photo and that's not where i want to go. Alexander.

Great advice all around, but I don’t know if it’s fair to say that you need to elevate beyond what you’re seeing and that not doing so is a waste of paint… that would be a matter of intention. You can be painterly and honest, honesty and truth is beautiful as well, as is the artists perception of what is perfect, which can be two different things

Hello Nick, I did not find this color the Chinese vermilion, does it have another name or a similar color, there is the Japanese orange and the vermilion orange. Furthermore, is this restricted palette of 4 colors only valid for portraits, I would like a palette for still lifes. Do you systematically scrape the whole face with the spatula? Your paint is very creamy, do you add a medium? how not to dirty the colors, you have to put a thicker layer or scrape and put a thicker layer.. do you have to mix the colors with a spatula...I use the translator, also because I am French and I hope you will understand me. Thank you for all that you bring.

Some of these advices are not for beginners but for advanced artists, especially the using-big-brush one. I’m not saying using big brush is wrong but I won’t recommend that unless you know what you are doing. I would recommend beginners using a small brush at a small scale, finish that area towards the end, and then move to the next area, basically a “scanning” style. Small painting is always easier than large ones.

For health reasons I need to use Water Mixable oils (Cobra by Royal Talens). I’ve used the Zorn Palette before. For this demo can I use Pyrrole red, yellow ochre, titanium white and ivory or lamp black. I can’t seem to locate Mars Black. Also I can use up to 30% regular oil paint without losing the water mixable quality. P.S. I liked this so much, I joined your Patreon page right away. You are a very clear teacher.
