You actually had it right the first time long vowels are written with two letters but sometimes wen writing you write them with one letter. So hopeloos is pronounced with two long vowels (hoopeloos) but because of a spelling rule the double oo becomes one o. If hopeloos did have a short o at the begging you would have to write it as hoppeloos this is because of the e after the p. Another example would be droom (dream), dromen (dreams) the o in dromen is still pronounced as a long oo or kop (unpolite way of saying head ) koppen (heads) here the first one kop is with a short vowel so when the en is added you have to double the p to show the vowel is short ottherwise you would get kopen (wich is pronounced with a long vowel) and would mean buy. But i can't explain the rule that well and there is more to it so I would recomend looking it up. Hopefully this helps good luck (its fun to see you learn Dutch it seems somewhat of an anomaly) Ps: if somebody tells you that you have to pronounce the ch and g harder (de harde g) ignore him (unless you actually enjoy that ungodly gurgle) this is obviously subjective and not to be taken very serious. but I prefer the pronunciation more similar to that of the German equivalent (de zachte g) (I think that the hard g is the main reason that some people call Dutch a throat disease/ugly).

Ich finde Duolingo gar nicht schlecht als kompletter Anfänger. Ich habe dort portugiesisch mit 0 Erfahrung begonnen zu lernen und würde sagen (jetzt wo ich den Kurs bewältigt habe), dass mein Lese- und Schreibvermögen auf B2 steht. Mein Sprach- und Hörvermögen ist allerdings gefühlt noch A2. Man sollte definitiv andere Quellen benutzen aber Duolingo ist nicht schlecht.

It's very helpful if you are fluent in German before learning Dutch. The very first an American will find out, is that German (Deutsch) and Dutch is NOT the same.

Definitely. Only thing i have (native german) is that i cant fucking pronounce dutch in any way. It depends on where you come from. If you're born in the north it might be easier since platt deutsch is reallllllly similar to the dutch language. But if you were born in the south (bavaria) dutch is a complete new thing. Ofc words are a mix of german and dutch but pronouncing is really difficult.
