Nielsen Sonic "Hunt" - Lead-free fragmenting projectile talk - South Africa 2019

In 2019 Nielsen Gun Parts went to South Africa to document and make extensive tests of our "Hunt" series of lead-free fragmenting pure brass projectiles. In this short video, while on a break from the days hunt, Jørgen explains the functionality and general idea of our projectile to a curious professional hunter who asks all the right questions. No script - just straight talk.
The conversation is aided by the inclusion of older slow-motion gelatine footage from a 2017 test, and footage from South African hunting.

Though an important injury mechanism during post penetration phase of terminal ballistics, is the uniform collapse of the wound cavity into a single point. If you prefer the intuitive approach, take a projectile you know produces a perfectly symmetrical wound cavity, and shoot it into ballistics gel while recording at >1000 fps. As the wound cavity collapses, you will see a bright flash inside the wound cavity, followed by a significant amount of tissue damage. A fragmented projectile causes less tissue damage, and less predictable effect compared to an expanding, non-fragmenting projectile. This is also why, counter-intuitively, a star-shaped hollow point actually causes less tissue damage than a symmetrically expanding HP. Source: FOI Handbook for Evaluation of the Effects of Weapons. Hi R. Johnson, Thanks for a great constructive comment. Such input is exactly the reason why we want to increasingly use platforms like KZbin to both present progress and spur some debate! You are very correct in so far as that it is indeed the prevailing consensus. However, our objective is of course to work towards demonstrating that perhaps the consensus is faulty in terms of the desired end result for hunters. Namely whether maximal localized tissue damage necessary correlates with minimal flight distance and maximal killing power in a hunting situation. From our extensive testing thus far, it certainly seems that our fragmenting projectiles are far superior to "regular" projectiles in that regard; more videos will follow to try and dig into both documenting a superior functionalty and also trying to address why that might be the case. Hopefully you will want to weigh in on future content as well.

​@@NielsenGunPartsDK Hello guys, and compliments for carrying out a facted based dialog on the relevant issue at hand, - terminal ballistics of this projectile and others. I do have a question to the manufactorer: Circa how much projectile weight is shed by the 3 petals ? And if it is significant should one then aim at bullet weights closer to that of classic lead bullets for the caliber, or still go 10-20 grn down, as it is commonly advised to do with other (but not fragmenting) non lead bullets? Hello, it seems, that I eventually found a lead free bullet which hits most of my expectations. It has the highest weight of most (all?) other lead free bullets (in .308). You use a brass pin instead of a light plastic one to keep high weight. The slots allow a safe fragmentation. The only thing what I'm not happy with is the tumbling of the bullet rest when crossing the body, but this is secondary. I am amazed that no other bullet manufacturer was capable of such logical considerations. But before praising I should test it. Best Regards hunter.g
