Out to 75-100 yards I enjoy pellets and the challenge it takes with the wind to make them hit the target. Slugs are amazing technology in a modern powerful PCP compared to a .22LR because of the reduction of noise and similar if not superior accuracy. The only thing is the shooter needs to be much more aware of their surroundings because of retained energy and potential damage to others and their property. Many good things come about using slugs but for our passion/hobby/industry…I can not stress enough is safety and situational awareness.💯 Shooter using slugs…please be careful. The last thing we need as AirGunners is a unwanted attention with some anti gun politicians. Please think about where the projectile will or could go after the trigger is squeezed or it passes through the target. Help us all who enjoy and love this way of life to preserve and protect it. God knows we have so much invested in it financially but even more so the enjoyment it bring to us and our friends and families. God bless. Stay safe.

Simply True, Heath. Hoping you make that same request below many pellet gun videos. I think the two biggest Restrictions-attracters are the big bore and mostly the Full Automatic guns, including the BB verity, but especially the .30 calibers. I know. I carried an M-60 for 14 months, which will fell a tree faster than a chain saw. The auto pellet guns are not for hunting, but true machine guns.

I went the slug route to try it out and it took the joy of shooting and turned it to frustration to get the exact tune and harmonic, even with the 600mm barrel. Went back to the simple life with 500mm and H&N Barracuda Match 22.14 grain, 5.52. It is a full mildot difference (higher poi) at 100yds than with the JSB 18.13’s, and a mildot lower than the NSA 23 grain 217 @940’ish FPS, both zeroed at 35 yds which is the top of my trajectory. So I split the difference and went with the H&N’s shooting FX Maverick 500mm @ 900fps, very stable flight. The shot count difference and consistency is worth it and I rarely shoot out to 100 yds and beyond. It all depends on the application of the individual’s shooting needs. For me it’s pellets and there is no shame in shooting pellets. The main thing that we all agree on is a humane dispatch of your quarry.

People always drag .177 in the airgun community. There was a case (cant remember the state) where a white tail deer was found dead with a double lung puncture and a copper .177 pellet was found inside. I thought this was completely bogus until i moved and bought some farm land. At the time I didn't have a real rifle so it was either a 9mm Glock that I had very few ammunitions for or my .177 airgun (900fps) that was dialed in to 100yrds with 500 pellets for $6. I had a coyote problem and they were killing my chickens so I set up one night and smacked one with the ol airgun. I did eventually get a 17WSM but the fact a .177 killed a 35lbs coyote is still impressive. I don't recommend or advise you hunt anything larger than a rabbit or small game with .177 but it WILL kill medium sized game with the right shot placement.
@0251GAZA9 ай бұрын
When hunting medium or medium-large game with .177 its all about pellet choice, you need hard but heavy pellets, so for example h&n baracuda power is a lead pellet (for weight) but its also copper coated (for hardness), this will result in deep penetration and then it is very deadly. But its also about what kind of gun you are using, so for example if you are using a powerfull .177 airgun you should grab heavier pellets, but if you have a weak .177 airgun you should grab lighter pellets; for example the h&n coppa spitzkugel pellets, those are also lead inside and copper on the outside. Now if you have a very very powerful .177 you can even grab some h&n rabbit magnum power slugs, those are ALSO lead inside and copper outside.

Thank you Justin. Spot on recommendations for initial pellet vs slug considerations or trials in PCP rifles. I have found at up to 50 yds with both my Marauder and Maverick VP 22 cal, up to 50 yds no real benefit to slugs. Slugs just cost more and make me stop for more air fills. But at 100 yds and beyond the slugs act more like a 22 lr and are much more accurate slaughtering the accuracy of my most accurate and heaviest 22 pellets.

The only thing I can add to this video is as follows : We all like to experiment. The choices of pellets and slugs are many ! A lot of us have many different types of pellet guns . Document each pellet gun as to what you found shoots the best I.e. pellet , slug ,manufacturer, grain ……. etc ! Many of the PCPs have so many adjustments you can forget what settings you had to get to those accuracies . I can’t remember it all and my guess is I’m not the only one . Lol

Exactly ... I have an Avenger budget in 177 and it can shoot KO slugs really well. But, to be able to shoot slug with enough accuracy at 80m or more then I have to bump-up the regulator to 2200 psi and adjust the hammer accordingly. While for shooting pellet, I can put the regulator as low as 1600 psi and get tons of shots in one fill (4350 psi). And you can feel the Avenger is happier coz it doesn't have to work hard to push pellets. Good video .. 👍

I really love my Senica Eagle Claw in .25. I get plenty of penitration threw a 2"x4" with pellets like 43 gr Senica . No mushrooming but slugs don't give me much penitration because they do mushroom. I haven't hunted any game yet because my dog dropped my rifle upside down on the (cheap) scope so now I'm heart broken until I get a good one for both plinking and hunting.

I did buy the Avenger and tried to ramp it up for slugs. Fastet I could get is about light 850 fps with slugs and everything maxed out on the gun. Can you shoot slugs at that speed? Sure, but that's not why I want to shoot slugs. It's a pellet shooter only (if I can ever get it to group, terrible groups right now). My next gun will probably be a proper slug gun that can zing the heavier pellets at least 1000 fps, maybe faster. That'll take something like the newer Impacts with a Power Block and larger air plenum. For now, pellets are great, so sticking with what works.
@heithwatkins2 жыл бұрын
I had to buy an Avenger as well. I had heard so many great things about it. Mine is in 177cal. With the reg on 2,800 psi and the hammer max. I shoot Nielsen 12.5 slugs at 1,005 fps. When I set the HST at + 2.5 turns from lowest. I get 880fps and accuracy on par with the best pellets. I can keep most touching at 25 yards. That's the most distance I have tried thus far. I hunt in woods so I haven't tried long distance. I normally use 10.5gr crossman ultra mags. They are accurate and cheap. I would try the 177cal if you wish to push slugs real fast. I believe Shooter 1721 did a great shot at 100yards with a 10gr JSB slug going over 1000fps with the Avenger.

@@heithwatkins I think my foray into cheap guns is over. Accuracy wise, mine sucks. It needs a new barrel and they won't sell me one without sending it in, doing a service call and charging for a barrel and service, and shipping. Not worth it. Hi Justin, Please correct me if I am wrong. This is a summation. I own the KERVAN Airboss K-1, 25 caliber. Barrel length is 58 cm. Muzzle velocity. Max. 1100 FPS. 335m/s. I’m using the JSB exact King Heavy Diablo and JSB slug knockout. - If i am target shooting/marksmanship from 50 to 100 yards then standard pellets should be fine? - If I am going for long range target shooting/marksmanship, then I should be using slugs? For example, anything over a 100 yard distance you are going to get less of a trajectory curve fall off, thus in turn more accuracy at long distances? - If you’re hunting small game at say 50 yards to 75 yards you should use pellets? - If you are hunting larger game at say 50 to 100 yards, then use slugs because the impact of the slug will be greater than a pellet with more expansion?

Awesome explanation intuitivelyvthats what I thought but few questions to slugs produce the same amount of energy as pellets from the barrel..also I’m sure you’ve heard of aea guns which seem to be the leading in the power / budget arena …I had one gun that I shot slugs thru but then a few solutes got jammed in the barrel I believe because the power wasn’t there to push it all the way thru due to the amount of air left in the cylinder… so I learned to only shoot slugs out of an unregulated pcp at higher velocities that said gun can produce ..no more issues jamming

Do a comparison of your new product showing the difference between Firearm .22RF lr and a HPA rifle. The point is to sell to new customers and bring them in to this hobby from Rimfire/center fire not only selling to older /previous customers . That would be great! Thank you

The consensus now is that slugs are more accurate past 75 yards especially if there’s a breeze and the slugs, hold more energy when hitting a target. Many of the FX gun pros are exclusively, shooting slugs now. I can’t seem to find any kind of test showing exactly how much energy a slug will produce compared to a pellet at 50 yards or 75 yards. Is it 25% more energy is it 50% more energy?

I too am an old guy and have a Sheridan SS in .20 cal. Mac1 Air guns did the steroid tune on it for me. Indicates that slugs take more air than pellets, but the amount of air is controlled by the gun design, whether it has a modifiable regulator, the amount of air released is the same whether you launch a pellet or slug. Using the same weight and air, pellet will have slightly (barely) higher muzzle velocity and lower impact velocity as well as range (and FPE) due to less barrel friction but more air friction (drag). The reduced range and FPE on target mean, to my thinking, pellets are for target plinking only. To conserve air but still hunt, set the gun for lower power and launch a lighter slug that can still get the job done at the range intended.

Don't be scared to polish your barrel, leads to tighter groups in ALL airguns.

Can you shot slugs out of crosman 5.5 950fps?

I honestly don't know why 177 pellets aren't being phased out more....unless using a very low power gun, they are just too light, too small, too weak, and too easily moved around by wind or any other factor. Im someone who owns over 20 air guns, shoot almost every day....every time I try to move into 177 again I'm always struck by how weak and anemic they are. 22 is the smallest round anyone should be using if you want any kind of energy or mass to your projectiles at all. 10-12gr projectiles in 177 just don't cut it.

.177 is used in 10 meter air pistol and popular with target shooters because of the flatter trajectory. Me I live in the U.K. where .177 very popular because of the draconian gun laws air rifles are restricted to 12 foot pounds above that you need a firearms certificate which is a ball ache to get. I agree with you on the.177 I prefer .22 and that’s what all my rifles have beer in.

I shoot 21 grain piledrivers with 1800psi out of my $180 Hammerli 177 and drop critters at 100+ yards all the time. Maybe you are doing it wrong?
@milesstover3724 Жыл бұрын
@@LouSassle idk if you read my comment closely but im really referring to light weight .177 PELLET. ranging in the typical range of 7-11gr. You are effectively running a 21gr heavy 177 slug and interjecting that into my argument about typical 177 pellet. 21gr is nowhere near a 'typical' or 'average' pellet weight in 177, in fact its double or triple average 177 pellet weight. You are shooting a projectile weight that I would consider fairly heavy in .22, and lightweight in .25 cal. throw some Crosman Premier HP 7.9s in that gun and we will have to watch you drop a critter at "100+ yards all the time"

At 50+ yards I like round balls using my FDpcp in 22 @ 950 fps. Pellets just have way to much drag from the skirts. $0.02
