NIETZSCHE: The Comedy of Existence: Superhuman Laughter

Nietzsche and the Philosophy of Laughter. Nietzsche frequently laughs and he especially recommends laughing at oneself. He does not speak of just any laugh, but of a laugh that comes from the depths of man. It is from that depth that one must learn to laugh the superhuman laugh. This laughter arises from the state of anguish and suffering. This is Nietzsche's answer to the absurdity of life and the comedy of existence.
Indeed, comedy must be included within the very art that Nietzsche proclaims is: “the highest task and the true metaphysical activity of this life.”
Perhaps best expressed in his masterpiece Thus Spoke Zarathustra, where the prophet Zarathustra, talks about the “laughter of the herd” and the “laughter of the height”. Other books worthy of mention are: The Gay Science, Beyond Good and Evil and The Will to Power.

Reading Nietzsche - specifically his ideas about the "spirit of heaviness", "the joyful wisdom" and "superhuman laughter"; concepts which probably take a cruical place in his corpus - had always given me this undescribable feeling of easiness, of seeing the world from a different and a more distant point of view, of the "soul" becoming joyous and reaching new heights of thought; a feeling no other philosopher ever quite aroused in me. I was never quite sure if the feeling was simply me having fun reading his juicy style of writing, or being excited with his method of destroying old values with a hammer, or if it was something about the ideas themselves that resonated. This video helped me reach a conclusion: the feeling is a combination of all the aforementioned, and Nietzsche's affinity towards affirming life, looking at it more humorously - that is, being a Yes-sayer - is one of reasons he is my favorite personality in the world of philosophy. Cheers! Keep it up. :-)

Beautifully expressed and written, couldn't have said it better!! I so much agree with you, I have found so much relief and meaning in life with Nietzsche's amazing books (I have still got a lot to read!). I'm happy I could contribute to your conclusion. Man alone suffers so deeply that he has to invent laughter because life is no joke. To live is to suffer. To die is to perish. To survive is to find meaning in suffering. The meaning of life lies in whatever I am doing in order to not committed suicide. The way to bring meaning into my life is to devote my self to loving others; And to be of service to people I love And my communities.

Twice while smoking DMT with friends- (it sounds crazy but I know exactly what he means about the god's laughing at all serious things) Twice while blasted apart during the DMT flash I have experienced laughter that came from deeper in myself than I can even express. I was laughing at every single thing I had ever taken seriously and every single thing anyone else had taken seriously. It was as if a joke so funny was told that it just ended everything and it was like 'the game is up HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!". It frightened my friends to the point that they literally got up to move away from me because my laughter made them uncomfortable. I distinctly remember their fear just made things funnier. It sounds crazy and I'm sure it looked even crazier but I know deep within myself that it may have been the two healthiest experiences of my life. (twice this happened but in almost identical ways and with the same people) It was as if some weight had been removed, or veil lifted (momentarily) and laughter was all that could possibly follow. What would appear to be (in the context of society) truly maniacally insane laughter. I have been confused about the experience and using DMT can prove to be traumatic. This video truly does really give some context to what would otherwise feel as if it were 'supernatural' and traumatic in the way that it fails to make sense. Laughter like that is never appropriate within society. Were I to have not 'come down' from the experience I've no doubt my next outfit would be a straight jacket. Still while it was inevitably outwardly very disturbing inward it all made sense more than anything had ever made sense. There was a notion of remembering something that had been forgotten at birth. Thank You for the excellent video on such an obscure yet insanely powerful topic. Thank You.

It is odd isn't it? There's a laughter you can get from taking certain substances or from being with certain people that you cannot explain. A laughter that comes from somewhere you cannot locate but feels right. I find myself laughing randomly when thinking to myself while walking around that I find quite insane, a laugh that doesn't seem to have a place in that moment or location but it's there! I'm here, finding pleasure in something others would find odd or maybe just normal and yet, I laugh and enjoy every moment! Glad to see people who have had similar moments of uncontrollable laughter from deep within.

I've done many substances (Psilocybin, Lysergic Acid Diethylamide, Mescaline, Cannabis) and though they provided me with glimpses of what is being presented here (and reflected within your comment), none of those experiences on any substance comes close to what I experienced during a particularly deep EMDR session. I believe that EMDR provides a depth of personal insight that no chemical (other than those naturally produced in the brain) can provide. I'm glad you found it on Dimethyltryptamine, but I highly recommend EMDR (even for folks without PTSD).

there is one frightening thing, towards the end of the Zaratustra book, and that is how clearly Nietzsche predicts his future and his end...using Zaratustra as his..-alter ego(if may i say so),he obviously makes peace with what is coming,it is a bit before he falls for 7 days and animals bring food to him,now who hasnt i suggest u read the book, check it out for your self

The most important concept I ever learned when studying Nietzsche is this. You see, when Socrates, Aristotle, Kant, and most religions built a two-dimensional philosophy, Nietzsche on the other hand created a three-dimensional philosophy or religion. Aristotle and the rest created a list of principles or ideas that could easily be put into a chart or a list of principles. When reading Nietzsche on the other hand, you have to imagine a pool of stars on the ground. From this pool of stars rises and forms a humanoid. This humanoid of stars continues to form until it can run a few steps and then shatters into the puddle of stars again. This happens over and over again for an eternity. You see Nietzsche creates these stars by creating inverted and alternate concepts than the ones we believe in. He reaffirms healthy ideas and then creates their opposites. These create the Rorschach test you personally peer into eventually.

translators make a significant error by using the term 'superhuman' (Nietzsche urges us to OVERCOME historical man and being "human-all-too-human" as a repeated error against life) ubermensch is not to be read as 'superman', rather as "an OVERCOMING man" or an 'overcoming self' (since he insists that the ubermensch is not 'male' and he has no objection to women becoming ubermensch - indeed, women fit the blueprint for the ubermensch in as much as woman has never been defined by man as a "self" and woman has her being only ever in becoming woman - ie in flux and constant process of change in accordance with life itself...overcoming the notion that a self is something fixed or immutable...(we do not 'have' being, rather we are the constant in 'becoming')...therefore, in keeping with this interpretation, it is not superhuman laughter but rather the powerful OVERcoming laughter he alludes to

That would explain why Nietzsche is so funny and all the other philosophers hate him for "lack of subtly." I have noted that Nietzsche is most critically "unsubtle" when he is right and is in the process of making people fee inadequate. "Nuance" is the most pathetic guise of decadence in the humanities.

Before the camel was the covenant. Anyone who seeks wisdom first makes a secret pact with their creator to find it. He then prepares them a house of the mind to store the teachings before we are sent. Then we pick up our house and travel the lands like a camel. Our wisdom a nourishment to the difficult and bare environment. Eventually we speak the word and cry out to The Master to avoid death for we love life. We are then tested before He who sent us. And yet we are only 5 steps in of 22.

This video is an excellent presentation of the subject, it’s very lucid and beautifully spoken, but I find it disheartening that you took the same structure, arguments, and evidence used in this essay and didn’t even mention the writer.
