This video explores the concept of The Absurd of Camus, Kierkegaard, and Dostoevsky as well as the differences between these three existentialists.
The Absurd is the conflict between the human tendency to seek inherent value and meaning in life, and the human inability to find any meaning in a purposeless, meaningless, and irrational universe, with the ‘unreasonable silence’ of the universe in response.
Camus contributed to the rise of the philosophy known as Absurdism. Most famously expressed in The Myth of Sisyphus. Sisyphus is the ultimate Absurd Man, a man condemned by the gods to a lifetime of rolling a boulder up a hill, only to reach the top of the hill and have the boulder inevitably roll back down to the bottom for him to start all over again.
Camus argued against the “leap of faith” of Kierkegaard and Dostoevsky considering it as “philosophical suicide”. His response to the absurd is to revolt, which he considers as the only coherent philosophical position.

I am burdened with so much philosophical thoughts and insights.But alas,there is no one around to express or discuss anything.;all are busy with their public life.Every now and then i feel so much isolation that i wonder whether i can live anymore without sharing anything to anyone.But whenever i watch your's or anyone’s philosophical discussion in KZbin i just feel a sudden relief that i am not alone in my isolation or knowledge, there are so many like me and thus i am united with all of you by the very impulse of our isolation. And it is amazing how collective isolation can help an individual to remain sane.

Sisyphus is happy because he has accepted the punishment, only when we can acknowledge the absurd we can overcome it and thrive towards some kind of happiness, revolt and find some happiness in its midst. I believe Camus might have caught himself not in "philosophical suicide" but in some sort of "philosophical immaculate conception", which is the birth or creation of Sisyhus' smile of contentment. He says life is absurd because we can't match our desire for meaning and the "silence" of the universe. Nothing really wrong with the premise i would say, but why is it "philosophical suicide" to reach Faith as a viable answer/option? Even if it's by process of elimination or as a last resort. Faith IS a valid rational conclusion. If there is no meaning accessible for us than "Faith" on some meaning is still an "answer" and, in my view, a philosophically alive one. Then there is the issue with Sisyphus' contentment. Why can he "create" meaning in a myth? How can he "believe" in Sisyphus' inner peace or joy? Does he chose to believe it? Like Kierkegaard did with Religion? And isn't he at the last minute negating the absurdist premise by difusing Sisyphus quest and thirst for meaning? Why or how can Sisyphus stop desiring meaning? By realising and confronting life's absurdity? If that is the case and that confrontation kills the frustration of the human condition regarding meaning, than that means life is NOT absurd. It can't be, because there is no longer the desire for meaning conflicting with it's absence. It is not absurd. A meaningless universe with creatures that don't need it is not absurd, just as it is not absurd for the universe to not have water and creatures that don't drink or are ever thirsty. Is Camus an Existentialist? What do you guys think of this? (ENG is not my first language)
@AdamWong
@AdamWong Жыл бұрын
Camus defines the absurd to be the contradiction of man’s search for meaning and the meaninglessness of the world. Suicide is not an answer to the absurd as it just side steps the problem (clearly). To have faith manifests some meaning, this negates one of the basis on which the absurd exists. It doesn’t solve the absurd, it erases it, thus it side steps the problem. Sure, faith can rid you of the absurd, but only by turning your back to it.
@ahouraazarbin8496
@ahouraazarbin8496 7 ай бұрын
@@AdamWong Great reply! It is also worth mentioning that Sisyphus' contentment comes not from finding meaning but from acknowledging the Absurd and choosing to live with it. The universe remains indifferent, and the human condition remains absurd, but one can choose to live authentically within this framework.

@@AdamWongthen to truely go through meaninglessness one must act meaningessly in which implies irreverance to any action. I have the same contradictory thoughts, i am not an atheist but i am not a christian. they go beyond this too but i digress. often i find my mind tangled up with contradictions hoping to find answers somewhere inbetween and that is my relation to the world, completely absurd. the most philosophical problem of suicide is truly interesting, but more so; the idea of the philosophical suicide, which i refuse. the ready made belief system is not only in religion but in society at large. people are scared to craft their own realities and ways of viewing and responding to the world in fear it doesn’t line up with others and you face lonliness, as social animals this feels like a punishment of thinking. it allows the person to escape from the anxiety of the unknown. i welcome the anxiety, the uncertainty and the lonliness. i’ve tried to force myself outside of lonliness and find connection but the more i try the more i hold onto dust, the more i explain myself, the less i am understood. someday, maybe i will write because i failed to reach anyone this far as a peer. i am done trying to reach for things out of my grasp, and someday things will make sense. god is not my answer, though. i do know that. we are condemned to death, suicide is a cop out and you embody sisyphus in the best way you can: pain and anguish and futile existence is the lack of an enriched perspective when embraced the top of the hill is the height of happiness and can truly be felt for what it is worth. all emotions are fleeting and ephemeral, but valid and all there is. freedom is in the mind, the mind that is uninfluenced by the outside, the mind that can hear everything and craft it’s own ideas out of everything available. the more you know the more your free will can expand or contract. be careful what you absorb and how you conceive of it.

Absolutely! It is put as an example of Camus' concept of revolt: the maintenance of a lucid awareness of the absurdity of life, this affirmation to a more desirable existence leads to rebellion. The whole point is the man is condemned to death and accepts it without committing philosophical suicide, which as he says he doesn't expect an answer or any solace from God (since we cannot know if God exists or does not exist, plus he is laic), that is why he'd feel even worse and wouldn't forgive himself if he was spared (as he was) and did something contrary to his belief, by being forced with the intimidation of being put to death.

And why does it have to be a problem? Hedonism could also be a choice in response to the absurd but I am not sure if it is the most fulfilling choice. As the pleasures in life tend to get boring or even hazardous when you propagate it to your whole life, it is unsustainable. Camus advocates for a life that is lived fully and authentically, regardless of the pursuit of pleasure or avoidance of pain.

Dostoyevsky’s and Kierkegaard’s notion of the Absurd was not totalizing, but instead lived on the border of Reason, which means they could give a coherent account, at least categorically, of that which is unaccountable-the Absurd. Camus’ notion of the Absurd was totalizing, which thereby nullified his account before its epistemological scaffolding could even stand erect. The only result could be an infinite inertness, or perhaps even worse, an infinite regress. To strive for absolute possession of one’s self, only to watch every consecutive self-conception slip through one’s fingers, to be so lost as to even be stranded from one’s own consciousness-this sounds like hell.

And how does committing suicide make that character from demon god and why does the character think that's what he should do In the face of no God?

4:15 secs, God does still exist, that is to say , the intelligence behind the biblical characters still is here, and still is existant. that intelligence could likely be older than even the bible.

He is right God image of man. And the son of man Jesus Christ does not exist. That would be to believe man is God or the image of man is God. Man & or image that most believe is God is a sum as any God having any image. believe a sum can also be the ALL is impossible. The creator of ALL or God is formless the only God that created all is without form or sex or could not be the creator ALL. Men worship man slaves to fear believe all they heard as a child. Child mind is the most alive. Every Creation story is an allegory as is Adam and Eve. Eve became conscious of self through knowledge learned not an actual apple and talking snake. Because it's not law and all is law or not exist. Opposites must exist to exist. she Eve seen and think knowledge becoming self aware. Man the master of the slaves didn't want this of course. All Allegory as Plato's cave allegory the cave is the mind all are trapped in a cave alone in the mind. People take allegories literally like a child's mind confuse and live a blasphemous life teaching their kids to live a lie. When God created the Son didn't mean created a man. Actual sun that rises and sets without light of the Sun none will exist . The veil before people's eyes the allegory do they believe in truth or lies. Man worshiping man fall in black pits. Why do you think the allegory of Jesus Christ calling his followers sheep. And sheep they believe they are what do the sheep do feed and clothes the master. The creator of all is light all that exists is mind conscience aware the light. What's the saying told when you passed to the next life go to the light. not go to the dark. Without a soul in the next life you are left in the dark soon to never exist. I don't believe I seen I know. Just as dreams are allegories. Look up the double slit experiment you will see light is consciously aware. Memories are all we take to the other side. create don't waste time on knees praying to man Santa exists only in the mind. Most people trapped in their cave think they're right about everything . Because they know nothing they have no knowledge is power wisdom is key 369
