Nungesser flew Nieuport 17, 23, 24bis and a prototype 25. He was crashed in 1916 with a Nieuport 17 and very heawy wounded, and use after a long recovery up to mid 1917, newer Nieuports types before the Spad S XIII (called later "the WW1 spitfire")

These are some really nice machines. Very lucky chaps to fly them. Thanks so much for a fabulous video with out music . Well done.

The camouflaged Nieuport is in the markings of Escadrille N87 which used the white cat with arched back as its emblem.

I love this plane. I had a model of it when I wss a kid. It looked great in the movie-Flyboys. The French built great fighters in World War I. That also includes the SPAD series of fighters.

The SPAD had a round nose with a round radiator in front of an inline V Hispano Suisa. Very similar arrangement used in the WW2 FW190 with a Junker Jumo.

You forgott that the most planes and engines use during WW1 from the Brits and notably Americans, was...French ...same thing for the tanks (Renault FT17...) use from the US troops, and long times after WW1...(Brits use her own tanks, but they conception was less efficient because no turet and too huge) Battle of Britain is not comparable: the only French fighter who was so good as the Spitfire was the Dewoitine D520, but was only awailable the 13 may 1940 and in small number, none was use in GB.

@I85PIES Don't they have rotaries then, if I'm not mistaken those round nosed planes from WWI all had rotaries.

I hope we get this great plane in the Flying Circus series one day. And the devs may want to listen to the sound of the engines to so they can up them in game instead of the coffee mills we have since years.

These look to have radial engines. It would be nice to see more with original type rotaries. These sound nothing like the originals.

Search our channel and you'll find quite a few clips with rotary engines.
@cornfedtuber7 жыл бұрын
Historical Aviation Film Unit Oh, I have and enjoy them immensely! I just wish you had more of them. Sighhh. I know. I'm sure you do too. And aren't these basically hand made one at a time? Do you find "blocks or major parts of originals and build on them? You know, I would imagine if you could set up shop to- not exactly mass produce exactly but step up from handmade one at a time- you could probably sell enough to justify and even offset the cost to powering your entire fleet of rotary driven aircraft. Ever give that any thought?

It was the Camel that was called the WW1 Spitfire, and the SE-5a the WW1 Hurricane. I believe, after knowing Eddie Rickenbacker, that the SPAD Xlll WAS better, no one would give the names of the British heros of the Battle of Britain to a French plane. I was just commenting that the 2 Nieports in the video were not what they were calling them. They were calling them Nie 24 when they had BIS elevators. He was always crashing.
@apfelsnutz6 жыл бұрын
Very astute of you... yes, I believe the Spad XIII was a better plane, however, the HS engines were very temperamental at 180 to 220 hp and the largest drawback for the Spad was engine failures.

By all reports of the era many of these WWI fighters were quite tricky on either take off, or landing, or both; with the Fokker tri-wing being the trickiest of all. Do you lads, who are actually flying these splendid replicas, find them to be particularly dangerous in the T/O and landing phases? Also, do you guys sometimes dog fight or do aerobatics with these planes?
@knightsofthesky6 жыл бұрын
Eric Mowrey yes, quite tricky to land, but not dangerous. Yes to the aerobatics :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/bqHCoKqFnLRll9k

Wonderful planes. That said, they never seem to fly any of these planes to anything like their full potential. I guess they just don't want any accidents....
@HistAvFilmUnit8 жыл бұрын
+Eric Husher It's not only accidents -- back in WW1 the average lifespan of an aircraft was pretty short. If it wasn't easily repaired it was written off and a new one would arrive from the factory./ Unfortunately that's not possible with the modern replicas and reproductions, so while the pilots like to display their aircraft, they also need to fly them to preserve them for future generations.
@erichusher92188 жыл бұрын
+Historical Aviation Film Unit That makes sense. I have read a number of accounts where pilots were complaining about being assigned an 'old' plane that was all of four or five months out of the factory, but I assumed that was because of the difficulties of field maintenance and the extremely hard service they were put through at the front...

@I85PIES Oh, I see, still great planes though, can't get enough of them. By the way, if you like this kind of planes, you really should check out RISE OF FLIGHT (google it), it's a realistic WWI aircombat simulation (no shoot shoot shoot videogame) and it's even free. You have to buy addon planes seperately but you get 2 of them for free if you download the free unlimited demo. Go and check it out.
@fredjackamikoons12 жыл бұрын
Rotaries were extremely dangerous to fly with and caused hidden health problems for the pilots, being impossible to put in any kind of an exhaust system.
@one7decimal2eight Жыл бұрын
The life expectancy of the average ww1 pilot was 21 days. I would say most of them died in combat.
