Hi, I'm putting new lithium battery banks in currently. I was considering a Mastervolt charger, In your opinion is it better to have a combi unit with built in inverter or a stand alone inverter. Would appreciate your input. Thanks Karl

ABYC Standard - so if the battery is UL 1973 and has BLUE TOOTH notification; sounds like the battery meets ABYC standards?

How far are we from a pure lithium battery system? I have switched my land batteries in my off grid system to lithium and so far I'm very happy. The charge acceptance rate has made a huge difference both in solar and on those back to back cloudy days when I need to run a generator. Would be nice to do the same on my boat

So the solution is a hybrid lead-acid and LifePO4 battery bank so that the disconnect or temperature doesn't cause a problem on a boat in use. Shame ABYC won't allow a common sense approach. Thankfully those of use who live outside the US are able to use hybrid banks.

Why would you put a 500amp bow thruster on a boat that can only supply 300amps? That argument makes no sense.

I got offered a free Lifepo4 House Battery Bank for Long term Testing by a pretty good Named Chinese Lifepo4 Battery Manufacturer, which I initially considered accepting, as I love Testing Stuff. So after some prior experience with Lithium batteries that required Charging in an explosion proof Charging Bag, I have oroceeded cautiously by attempting to get as much information as possible withbthe starting point being that manufacturer telling me that discharging Lifepo4 batteries below 50% loses you a lot of recharge Cycles, and shortens their service Life. I already knew as confirmed, that Fast Charging them Also shortens their Service Life and that Charging needs to be kept in the range of 0.1 to 0.2 C. Theremaining questions were what is the upper limit Charge Capacity not to exceed to further extend service life, and is Will Prowse right when saying don't worry about Charging Cycles as the internal chemistry of Lifepo4 is such, that the batteries will Die before any recharge Cycle numbers are reached anyway (this stringly indicates, to me anyway, that the Service Life of Lifepo4 batteries is qyite short and has a bad effect on Cost per year expense with Lifepo4 batteries ) Upper Charge capacity limit took a while to show up in a coherent fashion, after being kikely, with Mobile ohone Charge setting option for extending Battery life, by restricting charging to only 85% Capacity, with mobile phones, even doing this, and treating the battery well, you are looking at needing to replace the battery within about 5 years. this could be why the EU is now fircing phone manufacturers to have battery compartments to facilitate easy battery replacement, if manufacturers want to continue selling mobile phones in the EU anyway. Finally the upper limit I was looking for, appeared that I was kooking for, a tester of Lifepo4 powered Power stations also advised only charging to 85% Capacity, to extend battery life, just like with Lithium battery powered mobile Phones. Result ? I will not be installing even Free Lifepo4 batteries on my next Sailboat. I'll be going with high quality 99.9 percent pure thicknLead Plate Dual Use AGM Batteries, which I know, if treated Correctly can have a Service Life in excess of 20 years. in Cost per year Terms, it really does appear to be No Contest. the Tricknis imho, to have enough Bank Capacity to carry you through any no charge going in period such that the Bank Capacity stays above 80% state of charge. for me, that is a Bank size of 1200 ah, 20% if which is 240 amps at q2v that is able to be used. If krt above that, with good AGM the 3500 Recharge Cycles Flat Line, and never reduce. Lead batteries also love being taken back to 100% Capacity. tbh, with 240 amps available, I won't even need to expense of a built in Diesel Generator, as a gigh Capacity alternator should work out fine with Solar Panels and a ice quiet Wind generator. I like to run an inboard diesel e pngine under load for a couple of hours a day anyway, to keep its internals nice and happy. It can also provide plentynof hot water for showers and washing up in the process. If I can make them last for 20 plus years, during that time, far superior technology may well become available too. Seems like a Win so far anyway. Time will tell. If Lifepo4 Tech gets improved to 20 plus years, then I'll try some. Best Wishes. Bob in Wales still. 🤔👍⛵️✨️✨️✨️
