He will have to and the same for lots of businesses. That process will have knock-on detrimental effects on their businesses, and trade, and will result in smaller businesses. (Plumbers make good money I thought) If trainee plumbers (or baristas or fruit pickers or whatever) are all going to earn £1,2 or 3 more per hour that will shrink those businesses and raise prices. These lower salaries are not exploitative, they are just lower-end jobs for younger people or casual workers to do for a year or two. Now all that work will be that bit more expensive. For years the UK benefitted from a 'flexible labour market' with these types of work in it. I think a quick glance around will show there are also plenty of good jobs as well.

Whether you like Mullins or not, the simple fact is we all need plumbers, brickies, joiners etc and this is where the young ones leaving school need seriously think about, you'll alway have a job, someone will be looking for you...I'm glad I served my apprenticeship as a mechanic many many years ago...going to Uni is not always the way forward.

I thought it was riveting! I’d not seen Mr Mullins before and was interested to hear him. They agreed jovially to disagree and enjoyed the civilised chat. The ‘bar’ atmosphere seems to work. Mine’s a gin and lime juice.

The skills shortages goes back to the 80's when Maggie introduced the "live for today" mentality and "stuff tomorrow". The first thing to go was R&D and Training to cut costs and maximise profit, even proper apprenticeships cut left right and centre. NO more investing in the future or "the workforce" no it was about ££££££'s and making as much as possible. Of course decades later we are seeing and paying the full consequences of this "short terminism" despite some gaps being attempted to be filled by immigration e.g. (polish) community.
