I listen to a lot of drill. U.K. , US and French drill too lol. mainly for the energy because it’s full of energy, but it has no influence on me whatsoever because my mind is mature enough to still go about my daily life and leave the music at exactly what it is.. music. why is it these days we are required to censor everything? I have been listening to rap in general for coming up to 20 years now I’ve heard all sorts of wild lyrics and I have a clean criminal record.

Let’s take marijuana for example. Marijuana has negative effects on certain people, whilst with other people, it may have a positive effect. It depends on the individual who’s consuming the plant. It’s like the same with music, some music may have an effect on someone whereby they’ll feel tempted to pick a knife and stab someone, whereas someone can control their emotion and not pick up a knife and stab someone

As an adult (I’m assuming you’re at least over 30 considering you’ve been listening to rap for 20 years), I would expect nothing less than using your brain to make your own judgements and assessments about what you’re listening to. But the fact is, a large portion of drill listeners are kids and teens who do not have these life skills of making mature, sensible judgements. They are very easily influenced by what they see, hear and experience around them, and get very easily caught up in whatever is “cool” or “trendy” at the time, regardless of whether it’s ethical. That’s why films have age ratings and why a 12 year old can’t go to see an 18+ film at the cinema.

Well of course Fumez is just protecting the genre and therefore his pocket, but I’m pretty sure he best knows how much the lifestyle is glamourised in songs and how many young people get negatively influenced by drill. Talking about it as an escape and whatnot isn’t a big argument either. The number of people able to leave a life a crime behind them after blowing from drill music is very far from even 1000. But the amount of people negatively influenced by it is much greater and many lives have been permanently lost in the process.

He's right, it's freedom of speech. Orwell had something to say about it - the freedom to say what others don't want you to say. Anyone who ACTS on such messages does so at their own peril. If anyone is unable to separate words or pictures (expression) from reality will find any stimulation justification to ACT in a criminal way. As this man says - video games, TV, films. Books have been demonised. Some radio plays were controversial. The [latest thing] is always scary to pearl-clutching busybodies who imagine that society will crumble due to 'bad influence' but there has always been and always will be people who act with or without provocation or inspiration. The cause isn't entertainment otherwise what was the inspiration for crime and violence prior to any of these mediums?

It's a rat race and it's dog-eats-dog on the streets, not "peace love and unity" Newsflash its not the 60s anymore, this is 2022 and the streets of london are a violent and harsh place, and the people living there are gonna make violent and harsh music, what a surprise. If someone murdered your brother in cold blood, laughed about it on social media, and became rich and famous by making fun of your dead brother in their songs, are you telling me your response would simply be "peace, love and unity"? The black areas of London where the violence happens, are poor. Poverty creates crime. It's not that black people are more violent, it's that in London, more black people live in poverty than white, and it's the poverty which then causes the gangs to form, not black people or their culture.

It's not reporting on the streets. The rappers are rated on their authenticity with respect to their lyrics which actively encourages them to disregard the consequences and carry out the crimes they rap about. It's not the same as GTA. These are real people talking about what they have done or are prepared to do in the first person. The separation between fact and fiction is simply not there like it is in movies or games. Fumes can say what he likes but he must know full well that what he profits from has an overall negative impact on society. This is his contribution to the world he was born into.

I actually agree with Nigel on this one. To say that it's a fantasy and comparing it to action movies is blatant dishonesty. Drill artists are actually referring to real opps, therefore those people who are being dissed in drill songs can decide to retaliate, the people in 'action movies' can't. Also, a huge percentage of drill artists end up being arrested and charged for the things they rap about, the same can't be said for most actors. I also like drill music, but I'd also prefer to live in a city that doesn't have kids constantly listening to violent glorification of real concurrent crimes.

NWA was all about facing up to the police brutality which was and still is a big problem in the US. They were about standing up for minorities. Yes, they referred to some of the awful things that happens in ghettos and deprived places, such as drug dealing, gun violence, etc. but they rapped about it, they didn’t glorify it. They rapped about it but didn’t gloat or boast about it, or encourage it. They encouraged making it out of the hood. Drill rappers glorify and encourage all of these bad things, boasting about how many man they’ve touched or how much money they’ve made from dealing. All it does is draw youngers from the next generation into the scene and continue the cycle of crime. And then they turn around and blame it on race and class and the government.

I've listened to violent music from since i remember and not just drill or rap, also metal and screamo and so on and i'm probably the least violent person there is, i've never so much as punched a guy ever in my life and never gotten into any fights or anything so clearly it hasn't had a negative impact on me, in fact it just gets me energized and pumped and ready to go do what needs to be done. If i'm ever in a bad mood i'll listen to extra violent and extra aggressive music to let out the anger so i don't take it out on other people, so if anything i'd say it's just had an extremely positive impact on my life. Also if a person listens to violent music and also commits violent acts that doesn't automatically mean it was the musics fault, this argument has been used against violent video games and violent movies and violent books and pretty much just anything about violence but it's just people jumping to conclusions too quickly because it sounds like it makes sense when in fact its just not the case at all.

Growing up in London I’ve seen the kids on the block go from nice, regular schoolkids to roadman making drill music, shotting packs and walking around with knives. It makes me sad. Drill music is the product of a dysfunctional society that leaves people with no purpose and puts too much emphasis on wealth and material things. This stems from the inequality, poverty and generational trauma in many communities across London and the country. Social media also has a huge part to play in todays problems.
